The feeling is that although the Extradition bill has been shelved, while they have the momentum, they continue to seek more.

I don't think the resignation from Lam would ease tensions.

Beijing supports the position taken by the HK government and its leader. This was stressed at the briefing last Monday.

A second briefing will take place tomorrow, when it is expected Beijing will continue with their support.

Can the PLA (Hk Garrison) be deployed on the streets of HK?

Only if the HK government requests it.

All hell would break loose if the PLA are deployed, which is why I think HK government are being very clear on their ability to deal with the unrest.

Whether in fact they are dealing with it is another matter, but Beijing will not step in and force the troops onto the streets.

China has a long history of instability and rebellions which is always on the leaderships mind. They are trying a sort of intermediate capitalism combined with one-party rule approach but HK has a different history and background which is obviously causing major tensions. It would really flare up if the protests started spreading but I suspect the media within China is too tightly controlled for that to happen.

What I meant to say was China nearly has the H K government by the ball's.

H K will do exactly as Beijing tells them to do but at the same time make China look like a concerned bystander. China is duping the world . . Again.

It will, I think, create a situation and claim that it's forces have been called in by the H K government to "restore order"

This will make the Chinese look like "saviours" and the

H K government look like "victims". . . The protesters will be branded as the bad man.

There may be other forces at play ... the attacks by pro-beijing gangs on civilians in Yuen Long, with police unable to respond for 30 minutes, as they were already dealing with the extradition protest in Sheung Wan.

Beijing continues to support the Chief Exec and the HK police in their handling of the current situation.

They have however now called upon the people of Hong Kong to take it upon themselves to stand up to the small core of radicals (possibly being supported and encouraged by outside influences), who are determined to challenge the 1 country 2 systems rule of Basic Law.

another weekend of protests planned.. which I know for fact is affecting the willingness of people to travel to or transit through HK.

If China took full direct control it will die and become just another part of the communist block and then the Wealth will dry up.

The worst thing that happened to HK was when the UK gave it back to China

The problem now is the protestors are trying to force something that China can not give them.

Business and money is already heading to Singapore.

... Except the second system is resembling the first system gradually. The extradition bill has now been withdrawn but this has not been met with any fanfare. The HK people are demanding their 4 other points to be addressed. It seems there is extreme cynicism which I did not expect. I suppose when you are living there the attempts to indoctrinate becomes entrenched and obvious. The masses have become riled and mere gestures will not quell their appetite to protest it seems. Also OP, it is not the people ruining HK, it is the interference from their mainland which is causing the disruption.
