In the world trouble spots do you see Spain, France, Netherlands, Germany or Italy rushing to pour oil on troubled waters? Open your eyes. Try and assess Great Britain's role in this world.

The golden days of the Empire are long gone. But we still support the countries that we did rule should they want it.

This is also true of other nations such as France and Holland, that still support their old colonies.

"Britain has lost an empire and not yet found a role. The attempt to play a separate power role, a role apart from Europe, based on a special relationship with the United States, on being the head of the Commonwealth, is about to be played out. Her Majesty's Government is now attempting, wisely in my opinion, to re-enter Europe."

Dean Acheson, US Secretary of State, 1962

Having tried and seemingly failed to carve out a new role in a European context, Britain returns to being a clump of islands without any possessions and now marginalised on it's own continent.

Britain will never gain a true perspective of its place in the world until it learns how to move from its nostalgia for imperialism and glorification of WW2.

Imagine Germany had won the war our engineering and manufacturing sectors would be world class and the envy of the world. Our schools would be the best on earth and of course there would be no racism or mass migration.

We might have even put the first man on the moon with our combined knowledge..

Just imagine, China colonising Hong Kong. Russia colonising the Crimea. The Hong Kong residents must have wept tears of joy waving goodbye to the British imperialists and welcoming in there place the Chinese communists.

Colonial nostalgia is really quite sad for those who suffer from the condition. They have a sense of loss and belief the past was better than the present.Unfortunatly for these lost souls you can never jump in the same river twice. The future is full of uncertainty for them and the past was certain as we were top of the pile of nations and now as we slip down the pecking order of nations we struggle to find our place in the world.

There has been much written about colonial nostalgia and its connection to Brexit.

Yes we will not remain a colony of the EU. The EU golden empire will recline after we get out and the remaining nations see the UK prosper. The guy who started this thread clearly hates the UK nations. Botis has not said anything about going out and taking over other countries in the world. Clearly remainer bias. We wernt sure about Boris at the start but he seems to be willing to stand against the EU preconditions May agreed to. Yes May didnt have a trade deal only demands the EU wanted placed in UK law before they even tell us what their trade demands will be. At which point the UK will have to agree to every trade demand the EU make as we can not then walk away.

Go learn about Europe the UK has always been part of Europe it is a geographical area the UK has not moved to another part of the world. When you mean the EU say EU. The other point is you insult the peoples of the UK by only saying Britain as pur passport states the UK of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The poet rudyard Kipling suffered from colonial nostalgia .This longing for our colonial past has been with us for a very long time.

Boris suffers from the same condition .It manifested itself while he was foreign secretary visiting Myanmar(The once British colony of Burma )

While there he attempted to recite the road to Mandalay by Kipling.

The British ambassador slapped him down mid recital informing him Its was not appropriate and insensitive and insulting to the Burmese.

Boris is the epitome of someone who suffers from colonial nostalgia .

Britain avoided invasion of Europe and opted instead for territories less able to defend themselves. The most recent attempt was Germany, which used the same tactics as the British but went somewhat further in the imposition of "culture".

That'll be Viktor Yanukovych you are thinking of.

He toyed with the idea of facing West and opted to face East, prompting the violent Maidan revolution.

He was ousted because he backed out of an agreement with the EU and went with Russia instead.

Not exactly the action of a puppet ruler installed by the EU.

"Try and imagine what New Zealand would be like if it was run on the same lines as say, for example, South Africa or Cuba. "

Well I mean Britain did briefly run new Zealand like S.Africa.

You know, effectively and apartheid against the native Maori.

I get what you're saying, but you're playing the alternative timeline game.

The reality is there is an expectation with Mr Johnson that he seems to believe that everyone will willingly cooperate with us like when we were a global hegemony, alongside and before the US.

As for Hong Kong. Yes I'm sure many citizens would prefer to be more closely affiliated with the UK now than China, that said there is no guarantee they would not have tried to naturally devolve their affiliation from us anyway.
