A bit like “the E.U. Army”?

The Royal Navy can’t cope, the US are not interested and so it is down to the Europeans to secure safe passage of merchant fleets through the Straits of Hormuz.

The US have offered to help the UK but the UK declined, so not to be seen as allying themselves too closely to the US.

Well under the current rules other navies are already obligated to defend british ships. Just none are in the area.

An EU army is proposed to simplify the process as in situations like this, they could move, instead of individual countries waiting to decide.

However none of it matters, as with Brexit it will become illegal for most countries to defend the UK flag.

The UK was aware of this before brexit, but thought it was a plus as it would mean they would never have to be involved in any EU army.

The UK is a five eye country, which means that US intelligence tells them what to do.

That means the conversation probably went like this.

The UK: Our ships are at higher risk around Iran now.

The US: We have assets ready but we advise you not to use them.

The UK: Then do what?

The US: Ask the EU to send ships, if one of theirs gets involved then it will give our case for war more merit. Currently they are strongly opposed to our push for regime change in Iran. This will help us.

The UK: Okay, we will do that.
