Daniel Craig is Bond.

It appears he is called out of retirement and discovers the 007 code-name now belongs to a female agent.

Clever marketing move, if it gets people talking about the film (as the OP proves).

Still wondering where the politics are, though.

It is, indeed, a smart move; because it's all about the money.

You'll get more bums on seats by pandering to the PWB lovers, whilst still trying to please the more traditional Bond fans, than you will by the traditional route alone.

The real test will be at the box office.

Not sure if a whole new makeover for the bond franchise would be a hit at the box office. Would we start to see things like....

Change the Aston for a fiat 500 convertible, martini shaken not stirred for a glass of prosecco and maybe replace the exploding omega watch for a lipstick that fills the room with poison gas. All that after winning £100 million at the gala bingo....

Take my money already I'm sold.

Although the lipstick could become a little vibe for Jane and her love interest..

Hopefully the baddie is that massive blonde from GOT (Breann of Tarth) .She would make a good jaws type character.

This is brilliant Bob. I hope Sam mendez is reading this. The new script practically writes itself!

The new song could be cindi lauper's girls just wanna have fun!

Opening scene could be a mad dash round asda carpark looking for the last parking space and trolley

If im being honest this does have undertones of politics in it, gender equality and trying to move away from the mysoginistic bond of old.. but is that not why we still like Bond because he is not PC and is old fashioned. And yes i do know that 007 is a title so it could be anyone but please just make it elba, cillian murphy or tom hiddleston

We've got a woman Dr who and some people were very unhappy about that and we had a black storm trooper in Star Wars and we had more disapproval from some.

So let's hope a black female bond doesn't get the loonies knickers all twisted..

Not at all, a film should offer escapism and not be taken so seriously so that it has to bow to social pressures. Abd the story has always been about James Bond , orphaned from his upperclass family in scotland, if you want a female secret agent by all means make a film about it just make it a run alongside the James Bond films

I think they are just leading it down a dead end, if james bond is no longer 007 then where does it leave the installment after next, we have the story follow 007 or down the “not james bond” path with a Female lead or we follow james bonds character into a life of retirement which will result in having to do another reboot. When its james bonds character that is centre of the franchise

"What are your thoughts? "

That's not the same as having a female "James Bond".

It works in itself. I assume 007 is just assigned to the next agent in line when the previous one retires.

I don't know what it does to the franchise though which is really based around James Bond.

As someone says, probably just primed for a reboot with a possible spin-off running in parallel?

The real test is how it does at the box office.

Hopefully it won't be as disastrous as the first female Dr Who which appears to have failed on a string of poor plot lines.

I didn't hear that Dr Who was disasterous.

The writing team did change at the same time though, so I guess they went all or nothing. Possibly ended up with something

Well it was 13 posts before fabswinger's resident male chauv found it. Sticking this in politics was pretty darn shameless I agree.

OO7? I'd have taken Elba, but who cares? I was always a roger more man (ooh er, and it was partly because I could never take it too seriously) but we can't go back to that. As long as the next lot of films don't turn out to be as badly written as the recent Dr Who's it could be a good thing.

For sure, but if only they a had more women in the production - like one to head it. It was such geeky male's idea of a female Doctor, and the writing was so poor and (with a just a couple of topic-drafted exceptions from childrens tv) by the most fondent of men. And women scifi tv writers are actually out there. It just gave all the detractors something that showed them they were 'right'. Hopefully the new Bond will kill it from the get go.

"Do you think secret agents are male only?

In answer to your questions: No and no, but in the 007 franchise females are supporting rolls and part of that support is to be 'eye candy'. You may not approve of this but the franchise has had the same highly successful formula for over 50 years now, and you should remember the old adage 'if it aint broke dont fix it!'.

James Bond is 007, a male character devised by one Ian Fleming, therefore the part should be a male only roll. The 00 prefix to his number 7 denoted a 'licence to kill', again explained in many of the books. If the film makers want to cast a female in the lead that is fine she can have any number other than 006, 007 and 008 as they are accounted for. Its a matter of continuity and staying at least somewhat true to the original concept. Of course they could promote Bond and bring in a new top agent 009 and introduce a new female lead that way. But Jane Smith 009 or whatever name that would be given to the roll may not have the same box office appeal. I for 1 think that if this is true and the next 007 is a female that many (including me) will abandon the brand and franchise.

How many recent Bond's have been from Flemming's stories though? He didn't even like Connery in the role, as I remember. So who would you be 'abandoning', Flemming, the films, or your own idea of them?

Despite the zest Craig brought to the new Bonds, the franchise has actually been flagging at the box office a bit. For every supporter they lose they'll gain another if they get it right imo.

James Bond isn't, they are signing him out. They are making the next 007 a woman.

Incidentally the argument that she should be a 006 or 008 doesn't make any sense. Because if the security services are going to have new people with the same code number at all (so not to get up to silly numbers like 0059), then the sex doesn't matter - it's just a new person in that role.

OK, so the next “Bond” film won’t be about Bond. Or at least “007” will be a woman rather than a man?

Still seems a pretty pointless exercise that goes against the spirit of Fleming’s character as written.

When the last time they used a Flemming story though? And he didn't like Sean Connery if you remember. The IP includes the whole world - The 00's, Q, M, SPECTRE etc - I think it's a good idea. Craig and modern sheen gave it a lift, but it's been slowly flagging again since his first film.

James Bond is not a fictional character but based on Fleming's experience as a spy!!! And think of the 2 Russian spies in Salisbury...they do exist...

"James Bond isn’t a woman, so why on earth would he be played by a woman?

James Bond is a fictional character. He could be played by a cat. "

Without getting too pedantic, James Bond, the fictional character, is a man. Who could be played by a cat, although it would be fair to say that a cat dressed up as a man wouldn’t be very convincing.

"Incidentally the argument that she should be a 006 or 008 doesn't make any sense. Because if the security services are going to have new people with the same code number at all (so not to get up to silly numbers like 0059), then the sex doesn't matter - it's just a new person in that role."

Clearly you have no idea how bureaucratic records work. The prefix 00 denotes a type of agent, 7 is the agent record (file) number. When 007 retires/dies the record/file is not destroyed and the number passed on to his successor. His successor gets the next available number and it could well be 0059.

Just to be clear my military number had 8 digits beginning 2449 to my knowledge there have never been 24 and a half million serving in land forces at the same time. In fact at the time I signed up I was the 244***** number to be issued since the modern number system was introduced. So there is precedent as well as logic refuting your postulation.

Fully understand your comparsion, however, the comparsion is not a true representation. If you are saying, spies are ficitional, please explain the role and activities of MI5?

She's not going to be called Bond though is she. It's a 007 spy story.

LMAO

I had in my mind it went up to 009 (the highest character I can remember form it) and after that they were always either retiring or falling foul of something.

But really - 007? OK, they the number goes much higher. But get a life, people.
