I think you will find that it has less than nothing to do with Brexit and everything to do with a change in the law regarding in house machines and the proliferation and ease of using online betting platforms.

They are right, it has nothing to do with Brexit.

It's a change in the Law that allowed £100 per bet on betting machines and now has a maximum bet of £2 per go.

Sorry about the lost jobs and the empty highstreet shops but the simple conclusion is that the addicted punters are not feeding the company the cash because the 1 armed bandits can only be played with a max £2 stake. Before it was a max £100. Addicts will now go more online or not waste their hard earned cash.

I believe the Government, has reduced the maximum play fee, that can be fed into these machines, FOBT,(Fixed Odds Betting Terminals), or fruit machines, from £100 to just £2.

This has or will have a big inpact on their profits, and I have sympathy for the shop staff who will lose their jobs.

But, more to the point, think about the addicts, and problem gamblers, who will be " saved " from themselves.

As for the Bookies,

"You never see a Bookie, on a bike".

They will servive.

They seemed to have survived on 1 or 2 hapless souls who have been pumping £100 a time into them

naa. It's more likely to be because so many people use mobile apps. -it's the same with shopping and banking. If you can get the same service or product on line, without even standing up and often a lot cheaper then why go to a shop

Bookie shops like brokelads, Billy Mountain and the Irish electric company (paddy Power) have only been able to operate because of the roulette machines. Now that their revenue stream has been cut substantially I reckon there will be a massive reduction in shops. What might happen is that the limit of 4 terminals per shop increases to maybe 8 or ten or they might just start going down the road of live in shop dealers and live roulette wheels like a mini ceasers Palace.

I can sympathise with the idea of reducing the amount that can be staked on the machines in the bookies but at the same time fear that those who may have a gambling problem might do themselves more harm playing a game on-line at home after 5 or 6 cans of beer ..

Had to close 25 for contravening some act.

Dop not be stupid it is a change in the rules for the stake allowed in the shops and the prizes,nothing to do with Brexit or the state of the economy.It is sad that people are losing there jobs but if it helps curbs gambling addiction then worth it.

Better safeguards should have been put in place when online gambling became so easy 5 years ago. Mainstream tv advertising normalising the gambling activity now means 5 years on there are addicts!

And now tax payer money is being spent on centres and help for people addicted and in trouble.

And we ask the important questions too late

It was due to happen with all the new regulations imposed by the government. Nothing to do with Brexit. They have even stated that.

Next fear mongering story please for me to laugh at.

Ps it’s a good thing they are closing, those on lower incomes won’t have so much of a chance to waste what money they have on betting.

Its all about keeeping shareholders happy.W.Hills online gambling is registered in Gibraltar.Race course prize money already reduced(from betting shops revenue via levy) could mean race course closures.Also 700 shops closing means 700 cleaning staff jobs gone.(outsourced so not put in w.hills 4,000+ figures.Fobt machines part of closures,online gambling also part,William Hills disastrous attempt to gain a foothold in America another..costing the shareholders..

It seems to be largely focused on the way that many of these gambling companies have largely based such expansion upon the betting machines that have now had legal maximums adjusted downwards. They seemed to be a good way to help to ensnare vulnerable people, who could become more hooked on gambling. It wasn't an ethical business model and the sector didn't seem to be interested in appropriate self-regulation, so it was left to the government to control them.

It's terrible that there will be many job losses, which will damage local economies and that such people are likely to be near or at minimum wage levels. The online gambling models are obviously of interest to these companies too, as the costs of an online site, compared to shop premises, staff wages etc are much lower: they've already advanced into online gambling, so will continue further with that. Brexit will likely have had some effect upon the levels that people have gambled over the last couple of years but it's the government's move that has curtailed the betting companies.

If corals have only 4 terminals, and they are only allowed to bet 2 quid a pop, then the ones in the pub are just as good as the ones in the betting shop.

We have people already who come to the pub to use the machines because the betting shop is too crowded, and we sell beer rather than tins of pop.

imo its only bad news if the money (eg the losses of people who can probably not afford them) has been driven in online.

If its curbed some habits, then while job losses are unfortunate, I would hope those would be in a bteer place to fill the gap, than addicts.

It is a bit of a Sophie choice tho.

If it was a result of fewer people gambling, I’d be overjoyed. However, it’ll be due to online gambling which is unrestricted and easy.

Personally, I feel it should be moderated to a much larger extent.

The idea that forcing FOBMs off the High St will somehow reduce gambling addictions is ridicules, it is nothing more than prohibition by other means and we all know that prohibition does not work and addicts will always find ways to feed their addiction unless given the right treatment to break the habit.

All the restrictions on FOBMs has done is act as a sap to the 'Angry from Andover' brigade and put 1000's of jobs on already High St's up and down the country in jeopardy, not to mention the loss of footfall that must inevitably have a further knock-on effect on other businesses.

But hey, I for one am not surprised that this government have found yet another way to fuck over Britain, its what they continually do.
