Theresa May Resigns

The Prime Minister, currently making a statement on the steps of number 10, has just announced that she will resign as leader of the Conservative and Unionist party on Friday 7th June so that a new leader can be found to take over from her as Prime Minister.

Effectively, she keeps the job until the tories squabble amongst themselves about who they want to take over.

Then she's gone on to talk about all the achievements she's made as PM, blah blah like anyone gives a shit

All due respect to her, she had every right to be upset. She tried her best to deliver on Brexit - unfortunately, her best just wasn't enough.

The bigger problem here is parliament as a whole.

The worst thing is even if the torys lost power the alternatives aren't much better.

same with Hollyrood. I was a Nationalist but even I cant wait to see wee Nicola and her tartan tories gone now but the alternatives aren't making any real impression so no doubt SNP will keep power for a while yet

Thats like saying brexit means brexit and the democratic choice of the people has to be honoured...,it’ll be interesting to see where it goes but I can guarantee that approximately half the voting population wont be happy with whichever twat gets the position and it’s still true that the 100k conservative party members are making the agenda for the whole population which seems like a bloody good reason to have a general election now!

Its true you vote for a party (Nd their manifesto). Will be interesting to see the call out if the new PM pushes for a no deal. I can see people resigning the whip. And a call for a GE as they lose a working majority. And if a new ge has a new manifesto which is no deal I can see the vote being split with Brexit Party. And given FPTP that may let another party take control of the floor. Even if the popular vote is no deal.

If the new Pm is advocating anything but no deal, I wonder how much success they will have? They need to take a wide range on MPs with them. And the indicative votes suggest there is no consensus. And whatever they try and win parliament with they need to win the EU with. So back to the Irish border.

Those are the Parliamentary rules. The incumbent party has the right to call a GE within the 5 year timespan, whether it changes leaders or not.
