Do people have to resign from a party to be able to stand in the running of being a pm x

If you resign from the party you are no longer a member of that party and cannot stand for election.

Each party sets its own rules for their own leadership. The Prime Minister would ordinarily be the party's leader, who would be appointed by the Queen. I'm not an expert on the conservative party's leadership election rules, in or out of power, but from memory, they may be current Ministers or other MPs. They normally vote and whittle those standing to fewer, before final voting fixes their leader.

A PM can come from the Lords, too.

In theory, anyway.

For the Tories, MPs go through rounds of voting to whittle down the list if candidates to two.

Those two then compete for the votes of the party's 100,000 members.

The winner becomes leader.

In order to become PM, that person needs to persuade the Queen that he or she can command a majority of MPs.

They've resigned their Cabinet Position but still continue to be an MP and a member of the Conservative party.

Yep, you only become PM if your party elects you as it's leader and that party is currently in government.

Right enough. I wonder if HMQ would risk it though; saying "Sorry, but you won't do."

I very much doubt she'd take it. That said, these days, who knows?

I think what they are doing is deserting a sinking ship so as not to be associated with its final demise and so, in theory, holding on to their ‘integrity’ so they can present this to potential voters, either in their party or from the nation.

I suspect she would invite the leader of the largest party to seek to form a Government.

He or she might get 14 days or so to do so.

If he or she cannot, then she will turn to her advisors.

In theory, she can dissolve Parliament and order an election - but that would be a radical choice.
