What influence can the UN levy?

UN expert reported that the UK safety net was deliberately removed for an ideological harsh uncaring ethos. Ive seen it with my own eyes!

They are in employment, yet neibours having to visit foodbanks and I'm a kick in the arse away from going there myself, being on insecure zero hr contract .

The government (typically) deny this, so, what can the UN do about it?

All the UN can do is call them out on it; which they've done. That the Tories are in denial over it is no surprise.

Prof Alston is right. The government are wrong. How can I be so certain? I am one of the working poor.

Luckily, I only have myself to worry about and a combination of low paid work and UC are keeping me afloat - just.

But I have no savings and very little margin for error. My next major, random bill (eg washing machine breaking down) will put me in debt.

I can only imagine how bad things are for those with children, or vulnerable adults to care for.

Post-Brexit, the economy will shrink. This is going to get worse.

The report isn't fun reading. But I will imagine go largely ignored as we are more interested in milkshake than poverty.

Absolutely the problem. Posters getting fired up and diverted by the whole milkshake nonsense instead of taking a long hard look at the consequences of 12 years of austerity!

I think "cull of the weakest" is probably a bit over the top Sara but I guess it makes your point.

I'm not in a position to comment knowledgeably on the scale of poverty and deprivation in the UK but I do wonder if one individual spending 2 weeks traveling around can be considered to have a true picture of the situation.

The report isn't just a series of stories he's heard. He cites a number of studies etc so has done desk based research too.

When history books are written, they'll show how the financial crash provided political cover for an ideological purge.

Austerity - the removal of funds from public services geared towards helping those in greatest need - was a political choice, not a financial necessity.

TV and print media acted as its cheerleaders, with the constant demonisation of people on the lower rungs of society.

Consequently, people became desensitized to the misery being inflicted.

It was classic Tory ideology - an opportunity to shrink the state and redistribute Government largesse from the many to the few in the form of tax cuts.

The people on the receiving end were never likely to be Tory voters.

What we see now is a society second only to the USA in terms of the gap between rich and poor.

Brexit will make that gap much worse, I suspect.

The growth in inequality has all sorts of consequences associated with social and economic deprivation and resentment towards not just those hoarding the wealth but their puppets in the Conser native Party who make it possible.

The right will continue cutting, they have already started the cull of the poorest in society.

People have died because of their policies and they deny responsibility.

This includes reducing police numbers and ruining our nhs.

This is corporate manslaughter on an epic scale.

A lawsuit should be made against those policy makers and the MP’s responsible for their actions.

But you will find no justice in the right wing parties or the brexit party, they will scapegoat, and who will suffer again?

The poorest in our society!

Well I'm in the shit now. My car is still broken, and missed out as public transport doesn't run early enough... Double whacked!

Yep. This. And, up here, in 2014, 55% of us decided that the possibility of never being governed by Tories again wasn't a good idea - because we're 'Better Together'.

So listening to a mum on 5 radio this morning talking about how she has had to sell her house to fund appeals to get support for her autistic child which he was entitled to but because of government austerity measures there is no funding available to do so. The council employed experts to defend their position as it was easier and cheaper for them to do so rather than find money they do not have to fund her sons educational needs. Now that has nothing to do with the EU but plenty to do with this inept government.

And callous. I remember IDS and his terrible acting when being interviewed, pretending he was moved about the difficulties a woman was facing. The fucking prick!
