So the government can help out their banker buddies, make dodgy deals, loose billions of pounds, give out millions to foreign aid whilst they can't help British Steel. The high street is going bust. Restaurant's and businesses going under. What's wrong with that picture x

The problem is membership of the EU, and the EU's rules on state aid. As we still haven't left the EU, (even though we were promised over 100 times by Theresa May in Parliament we would leave on March 29th) and we're still a member the UK governments hands are tied in relation to helping British steel due to EU rules on state aid of companies.

The government loaned British Steel 120m two weeks ago

I remember the government ordering steel for new warships from sweden.

Tyne & Wear council, ordered the new bridge from a foreign company, when there's british steel and skills a few miles away in Middlesbrough.

Lack of loyalty, or eu rules?

The warship steel needed to be a special grade of steel not available in this country.

Our steel cannot compete with cheaper imports. We have to modernise, rationalise and start producing the more specialist steels.

The plant involved makes most of the steel used for britains railways so letting it close would be a rather stupid idea! We have already allowed the manufacture of specialist steels to be taken overseas because of market forces meaning it appears cheaper to close rather than support a struggling company. Blaming it on the EU is an easy get out clause for the poor management of what was once a world class industry. The fact is the government in this country have no long term plans for any of this as they believe the market will supply what is needed. Forgetting of course that the market doesn’t always make what you need when you want it at a price you can afford because the better manufacturers order books will be full with long lead times so you have to go to the less reliable manufacturers who have spare capacity because they are less good. The economy of the EU is based on just in time integrated production and if that becomes unavailable due to brexit then there will be longer lead times and shortages in the supply chain making the cost of manufacturing products more expensive unless the manufacture is outsourced to a third non EU country which means less jobs at home and less money within this country to spend on cheap foreign goods. Makes sense to me!
