I hope it was a wake-up call, not just to those who can break the impasse over power-sharing but also to the Brextremists on the British mainland whose grasp of Ireland and its complexities seems dangerously naive.

Other than shaming the politicians into ending the impasse i can't see how they can be forced back. There should be some mechanism to legally oblige them to. I certainly hope there's no return to the dark days of insanity

Yeah but with NI being the lynchpin of the whole brexit shambles....isn't it a coincidence that Stormont hasn't been in operation for around 3 years? We have no voice in our own parliament to discuss anything. Call me mister tinfoil hat but i really believe that it's by design and that the same sex marriage and irish language act empasse is just a smoke screen....

Do keep up.

As stated in Parliament.

Civil servants in Northern Ireland have no political authority to implement the raft of regulations required by hard Brexit.

That is because Stormont is suspended.

To enable the necessary regulations, they would require direction from London.

a.k.a. direct rule.

Brexiteers quite simply are playing with fire.

I think you will find that as the population currently stands in NI a lot more want to remain as part of the UK as opposed to wanting a United Ireland.

I am from Northern Ireland and like the majority of the population there am totally against a United Ireland.

I do not see many complaints about the current system of direct rule from Westminster. It appears to be working well.

Found the service very moving , the way her friend and sister talked about her , she did sound a special young lady , in the greater scheme of things it may sound not important , but when her friend said she was often late when they had arranged to meet but that was more than likely due to the fact she had probably stopped to talk to and share her lunch money with a homeless person , She has my respect, I am sure it has been said countless times before but surely her death must not be in vain , R.I.P.

David Trimble, Nobel Peace Prize winner, former Northern Ireland Minister and a man who the Peace Agreement is attributed to has just been on Newsnight. He is a (no deal?) Brexiteer and has just said the border issues have been politicised beyond reason.

On the other hand the Sinn Fein leader was interviewed also who said she would support the Brexit deal as it stands as it allows for an orderly exit - mentioning the border issues along with this.

Not being funny but I doubt it will make any difference as the murder of Jo Cox hasn't made any difference for the utter contempt our politicians appear to hold us in.

Some MP's have been complaining about threats and abuse and hou generally find that they are the same MP's who are going against what their constituents voted for

They still get paid, get a salary for doing nothing, think they had some cuts after 20 month of no governing but still receive around 35'000. Cut it altogether and see if there's some reasoning.

Then demand a border pole
