Delayed truck

Barbados

So daughter has just started a new retail job at a new high street clothing store opening soon.

This morning they were meant to have the initial stock turn up by truck from Spain. The truck normally goes via Eurotunnel... but couldn't this time due to being too heavy or something. So went via ferry. It got on the ferry, but then could not leave at the other end due to some paperwork issue. It managed to get as far as an hour away from the store and had to pull over for the night as the driver has now hit his limit and has to rest the night.

My daughter was originally due in at 6am this morning. She got a text at 4am telling her it was rescheduled to later today. She went in at 9am... truck still delayed so came home again. Then went in this afternoon... still no truck.... now been asked to go in tomorrow, so will be up at 4:30am to go in.

Whilst that in itself has nothing to do with Brexit, that is one single truck, to one single company, delayed due to logistics and paperwork, that has caused about a dozen people to waste an entire day.

Now multiply this up.... I think we are going to have a hell of a time in 18 days.

There is something that be done about it. We can leave the EU and make the situation worse.

Central

If delivery charges increase, it will be the customer who ends up paying more for goods, to keep business profits stable. Logistics is generally run on wafer thin margins, so those companies will seek to pass on their losses to retailers.

Derby

And guess what, just before Brexit, is being done to the M20 and the A20?

M20 between Ashford and M25....26 Miles of 50 MPH roadworks, reduced lanes and traffic delays.

M20 closed by Ashford, diverted onto the A20.....which is having major road repairs, lane closures and traffic delays.

You really couldn't make it up....

Repairs on the M5 Oldbury viaduct between junction 1 and 2 in Birmingham have been ongoing now for 2 years. Was scheduled to be finished last Autumn but still not finished and now scheduled to be finished Spring time this year. The collapse of the contractor Carillion added extra time onto the project while other contractors needed to be called in.

Thats the real rub. It does not matter if we open the port gates and say 'have at it, in ya come boys', when everything from the UK has to go through the non EU entry lane and the French, Irish, Netherlands, German, Spanish or Portuguese customs and border security start checking everything very quickly things will grind to a halt and transport companies will require paying for having their lorries and trailers sitting idle waiting for customs clearance when reentering the EU from the UK and that will have to be paid by UK industry and will be passed on to consumers. Inflation is about to get very real again.
