The reason they dont want it is cos they dont want to accept defeat so would rather have a hard cliff edge brexit, whats your view?

"The reason they dont want it is cos they dont want to accept defeat so would rather have a hard cliff edge brexit, whats your view?"

I think that we should have a hard Brexit so we can see who was right and who was wrong!

There are two scenarios - Brexit is an amazing success and all those who lead the charge should be given honours and a reward for allowing the country to flourish!

The second scenario is if it fails, and we have to wait 10-15 years to be sure, then and only then should there be a second referendum which should be binding and not advisory, so any foul play can be penalised. Also the original leaders of Brexit should be rounded up, put into stocks, and the people can throw rotten eggs at them!

A second referendum is utter stupidity

Definition of crazy

Doing the same thing and expecting a different result

At the moment we have a chance of the adults taking charge and withdrawing from a50

If we lost a referendum we would indeed be morally forced to exit on whatever shitty terms we could beg

It's not a game.

So if we had a, second referendum and it was, close again. There would be, a call for a third.

It's time this stupidity stopped.

A 2nd referendum would have been democratic if the 1st had been advisory only and PM Cameron had said it was advisory only.

What should have happened in my view was hold a advisory only referendum to guage public opinion. Then if enough voted one way or another by a set % then act upon that.

If it was to leave then trigger A50, negotiate a withdrawal and then hold a referendum on the negotiated deal. That question would have been...

This is the Brexit deal, yes or no.

They needed to be totally upfront from the get go though...

Do you want to leave or stay....

If leave then we negotiate a withdrawal that then goes back to the public for approval or not.

That would have been the democratic way of doing it.

But since knobhead Cameron said the Government will act upon the result regardless and follow it through then the democratic thing to do is keep your word and follow the result through.

Einstein's definition of stupidity.

Doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result.

The referendum voted for Brexit not soft brexit, not even hard Brexit, but Brexit FULL STOP.

WTF do remainers not understand about that? You were beaten, defeated, came second in a two horse race, didn't win, failed to secure a victory.

See I dont need to believe it I understand it

A democracy does NOT mean an ignorant but vocal majority wins

A democracy actually means minority view points are listened to and that change is possible after articulate debate

The fact most leavers do not understand what democracy actually means ,and rather distill it to a simplistic black white popularity contest is an illustration of a limited attention span and a superficial sound bite reasoning ability

The debate was the run up to the referendum and all views were broadcast and to call leavers ignorant because they dont think the way do is insulting and tells me so much about why you post what you do.

how is mays deal being put to a vote not democratic? simple question......

after all, we know now a lot more information that we did 3 yrs ago....

its a bit like asking a question, "would you like to be able to stop scratching a pimple?"..... yep!

then you find out the solution they came up with 3 yrs later is " okay.... we gonna take off your arms!!!!!".....

i will never get that fact you are happy to vote on a blank cheque, but actually argue against a vote on actual detail......

So with that reasoning every act of parliament should be put back to the people before being passed? these people are being paid to do a job they should remember that and get on with it.

All things considered - the power play May has had to overcome; from Johnson, Mogg, backbenchers and Grieve's. The absolutism of no Labour votes, the politicking of Corbyns brexit plan. The defined rules of the EU, the push backs from the house of Lords and legalities of UK law, along with the time scale this has had to be done in...

She's holding it together pretty well.

Thing is, people who voted leave last time can still vote Leave again. So unless a lot of leave voters change their minds after a better idea with more information then leave will probably retain the vote.

I think a reason that some don't support a referendum on the deal option, is tht they're not particularly interested in democracy at all (though they may scream and shout that it's all about democracy). You have to take peoples' motivations by their behaviour - are they showing a genuine, open and unrestricted perspective of democracy, which accepts that human beliefs and opinions change? And so a one-time only vote only details the position at that one time. Instead, the honest opinions and requirements of people on an ongoing basis, are needed for democracy to support the changes that occur in public interest. The great thing about progress is that people acquire more knowledge and understanding of things - they become wiser. Only a fool would argue that it's better to have ignorant people voting instead of people who have such wisdom.

With the referendum from 3 years ago, there was also illegal activity by parts of the leave team, as well as likely influence from other countries to gain a leave result. That obviously nullifies that old result as having appropriate legitimacy.

Public needs and opinions are fluid, they are flexible and it is right that government seeks to understand them and represent those of today, rather than those from the past.

I reckon many leave voters would vote remain this time after all the lies from the torys and those that didnt vote would also vote remain, so it probably would be 80% to remain.

"Thing is, people who voted leave last time can still vote Leave again. So unless a lot of leave voters change their minds after a better idea with more information then leave will probably retain the vote.

Before knickers get twisted I'm not advocating another vote, just pointing this out "

The thing is leavers KNOW that if there was another referendum it would actually be on specifics. And because they can't agree specifics then they know it would split their vote, and leave would lose.

The only reason leave won in the first place was there was no detail and so leave was able to be whatever anyone wanted it to be.

An example: May's deal fulfils the wording of the ballot paper 'Leave the EU'. But many leavers argue that it does not, and now all of a sudden they want details and want something different or more specific than what they voted for.

But as evidenced on this thread, most leavers on here don't understand or want democracy. They want their own spoiled way regardless.

I voted remain but respected the result. My view was ok this is the outcome. Mke the best out it as we can. Our elected politicians collectively have failed us. You would not conduct a business negotiation by starting at your virtual break even figure and then negotiate down.

Two years they had to sort this out.The Tory's are not united Labour are leaderless and not the party I have supported all my life. For the record we knew fuck all of the implications but surely during the two years a plan could have been devised and accepted by Parliament.

"I reckon many leave voters would vote remain this time after all the lies from the torys and those that didnt vote would also vote remain, so it probably would be 80% to remain.

A decisive outcome would be really desirable.

We'd be back to square one if the result was 51/49 either way.

Yes, it would be. I reckon a bigger turn out this time as their future hangs in the balance."

I think it's something like 4 times as many younger people are now eligible to vote but couldn't first time, compared to those older people unfortunate enough to die. This is the generation who would be most impacted by the result for a longer period of life.

The UK should also have set a cut-off point in advance, for that first referendum that would have been a decisive majority. This would be similar to other sovereign states that ever seek to gain clarity upon government position.

Chorley,

"The reason they dont want it is cos they dont want to accept defeat so would rather have a hard cliff edge brexit, whats your view?

Well said my thoughts totally.

Explain how having a free vote for the entire country is undemocratic.

Then explain how preventing a free national vote upholds democracy.

Here are a couple of helpful questions to ponder when answering:

The population cannot and must not be able to change its mind?

If the population changes its mind it is wrong?

Was it clear what a vote for remain would mean?

Was it clear what a vote for leave would mean? Which option was it between those trailed: Norway, Canada+, No deal, Cake and eat it?

Would you like a photograph or maybe you can google it.

They also spent £15 million on the Goverment website.

Well, first of all we have a first past the post election system.

A general election result is not advisory.

The Conservative Party Brexit means Brexit lost its majority and is a minority government.

There is a new fixed-term Parliament act so another election is not an option anyway.

Previously governments called elections when they failed to pass legislation or just because they wanted to.

We have had over two years to see how well we have done and unwind the promises from the delivery.

I realise that you are absolutely certain that everyone knew that when they voted Leave that this would be the situation we found ourselves in. I'd dispute that as a laughable ascertion

...or because it was and still is very likely to be very detrimental to the country.

Why should anyone accept defeat?

The Eurosceptics didn't for 40 years. Political parties don't when they lose an election.

Leave can continue campaigning if they lose another referendum votes for by the UK population. Not some other group of people. The same electorate.

Perhaps next time they can define what they want rather than claiming to give everyone every version and then fighting amongst themselves for two years.

Remain can do the same if they lose.

Why should they not?

Now, how about the rest as you have "answered" the last one to your own satisfaction?

"Explain how having a free vote for the entire country is undemocratic.

Then explain how preventing a free national vote upholds democracy.

Here are a couple of helpful questions to ponder when answering:

The population cannot and must not be able to change its mind?

If the population changes its mind it is wrong?

Was it clear what a vote for remain would mean?"

I was just letting you no what the Goverment sent out.

Again would you like to google the leaflet or have a look on the Goverment website at the time.

FOr those who said the thicky racist bigots did not know what they vote for.

on my comment everything has been spelt out simples.

Having another vote when it has gone through 2 general elections and is it 7 votes to get to this point is defo not democratic and makes us a banana republic.

I haven't disputed what the leaflet said have I?

So to clarify, the government leaflet was the "truth" and the Leave campaign promises a lie?

Yes of course you change your mind.

But that is for someone to run on that at election time to try and reverse it.

Why should they not?"

But we have done.

There was only 2 versions on the table.

We stay In Europe

We leave Europe

"Explain how having a free vote for the entire country is undemocratic.

Then explain how preventing a free national vote upholds democracy.

Here are a couple of helpful questions to ponder when answering:

The population cannot and must not be able to change its mind?

If the population changes its mind it is wrong?

Was it clear what a vote for remain would mean?

Was it clear what a vote for leave would mean? Which option was it between those trailed: Norway, Canada+, No deal, Cake and eat it?

The then goverment under Cameron spent £8 million on sending out a leaflet spelling out what leave means.

Would you like a photograph or maybe you can google it.

They also spent £15 million on the Goverment website.

Out meant out of everything.

No access to anything.

We do not pay into the club so we are allowed nothing.

Simples.

Worst case was WTO and then it was up to us and Europe to work out something that should have been beneficial to both.

This has been voted on a number of occasions.

So you are basing the Leave position on the Remain campaign?

All of the various options that were presented by the Leave campaign should have been ignored?

That's a splendid new way to run elections

Now, how about the rest as you have "answered" the last one to your own satisfaction?

Oh wait, we shouldn't have listened to what the leave campaign said, it was what remain said that was the truth?

Wasn't that "project fear though"?

It's almost as if the leave message was deliberately confusing.

Couldn't be that though. It's not as if they had two separate, contradictory campaigns running in parallel

May's deal will pass if it is contingent on a confirmatory referendum.

Her deal or remain.

That will be adequate for the EU to extend Article 50.

That said, it isn't actually a deal, its just the transition agreement

Untold more years of knobbing about to look forward to.

Before knickers get twisted I'm not advocating another vote, just pointing this out I reckon many leave voters would vote remain this time after all the lies from the torys and those that didnt vote would also vote remain, so it probably would be 80% to remain.

Sadly shag I doubt they have changed anything "

Do you think if we leave that the divisions will somehow be healed?

We have years more negotiations to go if we do. This is just the transition deal!

Regardless it is not a cake and eat it option.

I agree that nobody wants to acknowledge that they might have made a mistake. People will continue to believe that they are right as their life collapses around them because it's someone else's fault. That narrative started long ago. It's the entire basis of the Brexit vote.

Would a new vote be advisory or mandatory?

Would there be checks and balances to stop any abuses from either side?

Would the law allow fake news to be removed?

If that happens then yes a second referendum, if not then no! What they do need is to stop foreign bots influencing any election!

It would be democratic if the result of the first had already been implemented.

The argument comparing it to general elections fails to appreciate that whilst we do get the opportunity to 'change our minds' every five years, the result of the election is always implemented. Immediately.

I wasn't happy with the result of the 1997 election.

Tough. I had to wait until 2001 to have a chance of changing the result.

I wasn't happy with that one either.

Guess what.

Next opportunity to do anything about it was 2005.

Still wasn't happy.

2010, finally got somewhere near the result I wanted (at least we no longer had a Labour government)

and you think holding another vote would make the country less divided? i didnt vote but the area i live in voted leave and being i. the pubs and out and about i not heard anything that points to tge result being any different where i live and i imagine the result would be the same again nationwide.all doing another vote would achive is piss half the country off even more.and if leave won again remainers would just want another and another.anyway there not wnough time left for another one.the e.u aint gonna wait another 6 or 7 months they dont want a load of anti e.u meps sitting in there parliment

What's your sample size?

Do you think if we leave that the divisions will somehow be healed?

We have years more negotiations to go if we do. This is just the transition deal!

Regardless it is not a cake and eat it option.

I agree that nobody wants to acknowledge that they might have made a mistake. People will continue to believe that they are right as their life collapses around them because it's someone else's fault. That narrative started long ago. It's the entire basis of the Brexit vote.

as for the country not being divided the genie is out the bottle now.whatever happens millions on one side or the other are gona detest the others.the country is broke now and gona take years for divisions to be healed if ever."

So another referendum based on an actual framework deal certainly won't make it any worse.

"Thing is, people who voted leave last time can still vote Leave again. So unless a lot of leave voters change their minds after a better idea with more information then leave will probably retain the vote.

Before knickers get twisted I'm not advocating another vote, just pointing this out I reckon many leave voters would vote remain this time after all the lies from the torys and those that didnt vote would also vote remain, so it probably would be 80% to remain."

The problem with this is, once we’ve left we will do irreparable damage. So if we rejoined we be joining from a weaker position, and if we were allowed to rejoin we would not get anything like as powerful position within the EU as we had.

That’s why people are so desperate not to let this country slide into poverty and international obscurity. There is no coming back. The most optimistic predictions suggest about 50 years to get back to where we are now.

The main reason for not rerunning the referendum is that we’d get the same result. We don’t know anything know we didn’t know before. We knew it would be ruinous for the country, we knew it’s only purpose is for a rich few to avoid paying taxes and to tighten their grip on power. People either don’t care or don’t believe what’s going on in the work around them.

Most people in Scotland would happily see England go stuff itself, but they want to remain in the EU. They were told at the time that if they left the UK this would automatically take them out of the EU. The results of both referenda showed that by an overwhelming majority the Scottish people wished to remain members of Europe.

Under any form of brexit, Scotland will insist on another independence referendum, which will result in the break up of the United Kingdom. Scotland will then petition to rejoin the EU, and Edinburgh will become the new preferred centre for financial institutions.

My prediction - in the event of brexit, within ten years the UK will splinter into four independent countries. Although there is then a slight chance that Scotland, Wales and NI will unify into the New United Kingdom, and build walls to keep the English from interfering in their countries

The electorate won't be given the opportunity to vote leave this time round.

The referendum will either be May's deal Vs Remain

Or

Hard Brexit, May's deal or remain (thus effectively splitting the leave vote to ensure they don't win)

What you will not see is a simple remain vs leave on the ballot.

It's a yes/no answer really.

The terms of the Lisbon treaty were changed after the referendum in Ireland. Whisper it, but that sounds like the EU listening. There was also an economic down turn. The circumstances change and so did the vote.

53.4% no to 46.6% yes , with a turnout of 53.1% became 67.1% of approal, while 32.9% voted "No" on turnout of 58%.

Were they "wrong"? Were they "conned"?

Lucky you. Except you've previously said that you aren't

La, la, la, la

That was with the backstop in its previous form, do keep up. Michel Barnier has said today that the EU is ready to give legally binding changes to the backstop which Theresa May needs to command a majority in Parliament. On that basis i'll be reasonably happy with it. "

You've been reading the Mail and the Express again

He's discussing an "interpretive document".

Not legally binding but it's being sold to Leave supporters as such so that you can save face.

Bless

"The sad fact is that we won't be allowed to leave.

The second referendum will be either Theresa May's deal (remaij lite) or remain.

Mays deal is leave. It delivers the will of the people (based on the only measure we have).

If a leaver doesn’t like it they should be pushing for a clearer second referendum

Or that we should respect the outcome of the largest democratic excercise in our history.

But we all know that the EU way is to keep people voting until they vote the way that they are told, and if that doesn't work, repackage the vote (see: Ireland and the Lisbon Treaty).

You really have become the conspiracy king

So are you saying that people cannot change their minds once the promises turn out to be lies?

It's a yes/no answer really.

The terms of the Lisbon treaty were changed after the referendum in Ireland. Whisper it, but that sounds like the EU listening. There was also an economic down turn. The circumstances change and so did the vote.

53.4% no to 46.6% yes , with a turnout of 53.1% became 67.1% of approal, while 32.9% voted "No" on turnout of 58%.

Were they "wrong"? Were they "conned"?

85% of the population think EU membership is a good thing and this is after the economic crash and subsequent, competed, austerity measures.

Conspiracy theories lack evidence.

My assertions do not.

It's not long now until the 29th of Match.

If we leave the EU, I'll eat my proverbial hat.

"

Really? What evidence? I've stated what changed between the two votes and the voting percentages and current mood of the Irish.

Were they wrong? Do you know better than them?

Your proof of a conspiracy is if in a free vote people change their minds? You do understand that is completely non-sensical don't you?

Of course the vote percentage changed. That was my point. If referenda fail, the people must be re-educated and made to vote again.

They were wrong to change their minds and you do know better.

Why not just answer the questions directly?

Your evidence of a conspiracy is that people changed their minds.

Nothing changed between the votes. The Irish don't really like being I. The EU.

So people only change their mind if they are somehow brainwashed?

It's a self-sustaining theory.

Huddersfield /derby cinemas

A Tory MP who voted against May's deal in the biggest defeat ever for a government in parliament , said on radio4 that he is unsure how he will vote in the 2nd vote ( even it is very similar to the 1st vote) but would vote for May's deal if there is a 3rd vote ,,,,,, so it's ok to have 3 votes if you don't like the result of the 1st and 2nd votes even if the 1st vote was lost by a record margin but it's not ok to have another vote of if the 1st vote was as close as 52/48 ,,, the amount of hypocrisy is unbelievable
