Unlawfully acquired by the Uk .

In a non-binding opinion issued on Monday, the World Court said the UK acted illegally when it divided the territory from Mauritius in 1965 and later displaced thousands of islanders.

One wonders if this tactic can be applied to Gibraltar Northern Ireland & anyone else still in dispute with the U.K

It's a stain on British values and the treatment of the chagosians deprived of an income and then forced to leave was and is a disgrace.

Argyll

The United Kingdom excised the archipelago from Mauritian territory in 1965, three years before Mauritius gained independence in 1968. The Chagosians were then forcebly removed to allow a military base on Diego Garcia.

West London

So are we going to have a referendum to leave the United Nations?

After all they are:

"Un-elected"

They have overridden the sovereignty of the UK with judgement of the International Court of Justice

We give them loads of money and "get nothing in return" which we could spend on the NHS

They, probably, need us more than we need them

#UNexit

#Unexit from The Brexit

Quite brilliant even if not intentional.

No you simply ignore them like everybody else does when it suits them.

Me I'd just hand the whole lot back and scrap the commonwealth tomorrow.

Heathrowish

How many of the 900 odd inhabitants that were displaced in 1965 were from an indigenous population amd how many resulted from an influx from elsewhere?

Just asking....

John Pilger has reported extensively on this.

Central

If the UK is to regain some of Its lost credibility, it should respect the law and rectify this by returning them. Its residents have been treated in the most atrocious ways for decades.

I would say there are lots deeper political reasons for this rather than the people displaced 50 years ago. The USA won't abandon a major strategical military base even if Britain did cede these islands and geographically they are many miles from mauritiaus and where only tied to Mauritius for old colonial rule because they didn't warrant a British empire era government..I think in this modern era it's more about securing control of possible resources just the same as China has and Russia...the UN ruled against both these have they listened to the UN...??

Bristol East

It's part of the Cold War history.

When the Soviets shot down the Gary Powers spy plane, the UK realised its airborne nuclear strike force had become redundant.

Submarine-based systems were deemed to be invulnerable to a first strike, but the UK did not have the money to invest in the technology.

It did a deal with the US.

In return for getting the submarine technology, the UK gave Diego Garcia to the US for a military base.

The local inhabitants were treated appallingly and forcibly evicted.

Not quite the same as Gibraltar ending up in the UKs hands.

I sadly don’t see the Chagos going home because of this ruling. Diego Garcia is just too strategic at the moment.

Giving them back the Islands with a ready made airbase and deepwater harbour would allow them to flourish in no time if they took the tourist dollar.

Absolute shame.

It's not a binding ruling. It is simply an advisory opinion.

Whether right or wrong, there is no compulsion to do anything as a result.
