"Isnt it time to call a halt on this bollocks hs2, and invest the money in industry. One example being to buy the honda plant and build our own cars, Build our own power stations Upgrade our own existing railways " Or according to JC today and the MAKE conference, add another £150bn making two fifty billion (he didn't even add the hundred), and create a bank.

"Who will buy the cars? Everybody will be out of work soon Railways are no use if nobody has any money to pay to use them " There'd be jobs in the rail and energy industries, better infrastructure to facilitate businesses, and the manufacturing of cars for the home market and competition on global market.

"Who will buy the cars? Everybody will be out of work soon Railways are no use if nobody has any money to pay to use them " Or should we squander a hundred billion on a bollocks railway, likely to be only between London and Birmingham.

"Isnt it time to call a halt on this bollocks hs2, and invest the money in industry. One example being to buy the honda plant and build our own cars, Build our own power stations Upgrade our own existing railways " The tracks are at, or near to capacity. Upgrading may increase capacity by 10% maybe 20% at a push and on completion would be back to capacity. New track is needed and if you are going to have new track, why not new rolling stock and why not the most modern that is available? Try getting on an off peak train to/from the NW to/from London at the moment without a seat reservation. That experience will tell you all you need to know about capacity. People are getting hung up on speed - it isn’t about that, it is about more than doubling capacity with a modern network.

" A much better use of the money would be to scrap HS2 and nationalise the M6 toll road to improve road links between Birmingham and London. Roads around Birmingham are ridiculously over congested and the M6 toll is massively under used as no one wants to pay the toll.

If HS2 is canned then the capacity needed on that stretch of line cannot be created. The jobs and investment will not happen. The expertise will not be learned. Personally I think the Northern coss-country section should have been built first but that's by the by. You'd rather spend the same funds on a subsidy. For people in a very confined geographical area. You have small horizons.

One example being to buy the honda plant and build our own cars, Build our own power stations Upgrade our own existing railways " An additional line is needed anyway so it may as well be a high speed with a relatively small additional investment such that we benefit from new knowledge to apply elsewhere. Buildings HS2 is investing in industry. I'm not sure that you do quite realise what the scale of "build our own cars" implies. Easily said and very, very hard done.

"An automotive guy from What Car & some other publication was on LBC radio and he was saying Honda's manufacturing plant could not be taken over and produce different cars anywhere near cost effectively. Every system, robot & piece of software has been specially designed and built to produce Civics. " Thats very true. Keeps me in work though!

" The West Coast Line needs more capacity and fiddling around with the existing Victorian era track that has been fiddled with extensively over the last 100 years just won’t cut it. New infrastructure is needed to enable more modern trains to run faster with more trains fitted into a tighter sequencing. PLUS - the country needs better local transport links. The West Midlands tramway that connects Wolverhampton to Birmingham and the Manchester Metro are good examples but they need replicating and they themselves need extending.

Why do you think trying to create a "British" car company will be more useful? Are there any inhospitable bodies that think that's a good idea? Tracks in the right place for local commuting for the masses, not business executives wanting to go to Birmingham. Due to it's speed, it can only stop occasionally. The more stops will mean more acceleration and slowing, adding time to journeys and straight track, making it inflexible to build around sites, adding to heavy compensation, destruction of habitats etc.. Planning : it's a politically driven prestige project, building it for building sake, rather than addressing real need. Its a manufactured need (excuse) to build it, contracts given to politicians mates and companies that politicians own or have interests in. Brit cars: less import duty and keeping skilled workers, possibly building other makes under licence, innovation in building electric cars, keeping jobs and money in this country and the possibility of exports. Inhospitable bodies??.. What? , zombies you mean?! The West Coast Line needs more capacity and fiddling around with the existing Victorian era track that has been fiddled with extensively over the last 100 years just won’t cut it. New infrastructure is needed to enable more modern trains to run faster with more trains fitted into a tighter sequencing. PLUS - the country needs better local transport links. The West Midlands tramway that connects Wolverhampton to Birmingham and the Manchester Metro are good examples but they need replicating and they themselves need extending." I'd approve it.. "Who will buy the cars? Everybody will be out of work soon Railways are no use if nobody has any money to pay to use them Or should we squander a hundred billion on a bollocks railway, likely to be only between London and Birmingham. A much better use of the money would be to scrap HS2 and nationalise the M6 toll road to improve road links between Birmingham and London. Roads around Birmingham are ridiculously over congested and the M6 toll is massively under used as no one wants to pay the toll. Just pay the toll you cheapskate! Saves time and money in the long run- but then you want everything for nothing! I think you'll find its everyone who doesn't want to use it! One extra customer won't make a blind bit of difference. The M6 toll has turned out to be a white elephant, and HS2 is another white elephant in the making. If drivers are choosing to sit in traffic rather than pay a toll, why should the tax payer subsidise them ? Why not give HS2 money to the NHS instead? It would be a guaranteed way to make businesses investment in UK infrastructure fall of a cliff. Millions invested in staff and resource and equipment binned off. Who's going to bid on the next job or if they are how much of a risk premium will they add? Ones that make sound judgement aren't cowboys that jump on the gravy train knowing they're building a white elephant just to lign their pockets with taxpayers money? Excellent solution. We don't build anything then as all government spending is "the gravy train" What makes it a white elephant (one of which was recently born in South Africa btw)? How would you increase train capacity on a busy route without additional lines? Oo.. I don't know. Perhaps an independent body that evaluates projects based on what the need is, viability, economic sense, benefit etc., rather than politically driven where politicians give contracts out to their mates, business interests would be my guess! I doubt very much that the process is ideal, but what do you think happens now? Just bemoaning the state of everything and suggesting a simple answer to a complex problem. Let's have an independent body? An independent body has been suggesting MPs pay rises for years but it apparently upsets people. An independent body suggested that Wourboys the sex attacker should be released but that was not acceptable either. Just build our own cars with the money instead? Easy. Cancelling the project won't make future private investment less likely or more expensive? Sure. If you say so. Nothing is perfect, but better than what we have now. What solution would you have? Assuming you have one. Your basic starting point is that we don't need more train lines. Why not? Why is HS2 a waste of money? Is there plenty of space on trains? If i was i charge " So we do need more public transport? Taking fast trains off the line onto HS2 won't allow increased local capacity then? It interesting. A conventional rail line will cost about 10% less given the same number of stations. That differential reduces with more stations. Of course, you would have checked this before forming an opinion. It's a prestige project for whom? Who's mates? Who has shares in what? I am sceptical of most politicical decisions, but this is a conspiracy theory by definition. How many jobs? How much knowledge? Worthless? Do you have any concept about the automotive industry? The investment needed? The cost margins and scake that they run at to be viable? Why is Dyson building its electric cars in Singapore and not here? Why is JLR building its I-Pace in Austria? Do you genuinely believe that an isolated UK market is a viable size? You just "don't like" HS2 without any actual justification and you jut "want" a British car company without any thought about what that means. It's not uncommon. Instinctive decision making. Great if you're running away from a bear. Rubbish for infrastructure strategic planning. Are there any independent bodies that think that setting up a car company from scratch is a good idea or that Hs2 is a bad one?

I just wish they'd built the extension to Manchester that they originally talked about. That stretch of the M6 from M62 down is terrible. I'd happily pay to avoid it.
