BMI goes under

Well another casualty of Brexit, BMI has just ceased operating. They are currently repositioning aircraft back to the UK, to what looks like a storage site.

They also quote the rising price of oil (I'm guessing falling pound didn't help there) and the fact the UK was no longer allowed full participation in the EU emissions trading scheme, after signalling intention to pull out of it with Brexit.

Oh well... but the brexiteers all voted for this, as they keep telling us.

I’m sure the workers can adapt and make the most of it. That seems the be the brexiteers plan so far.

British Midland International?

They were shite.

I remember going to Bristoi Airport one Monday morning at silly o'clock in the middle of January for a plane to Aberdeen.

It was cancelled.

I went to their desk.

They were no help.

I went home.

Rubbish. Good riddance.

The company said it had been badly affected by spikes in fuel and carbon costs and uncertainty over Brexit.

A Flybmi spokesman said: "It is with a heavy heart that we have made this unavoidable announcement.

"The airline has faced several difficulties, including recent spikes in fuel and carbon costs, the latter arising from the EU's recent decision to exclude UK airlines from full participation in the Emissions Trading Scheme.

"Current trading and future prospects have also been seriously affected by the uncertainty created by the Brexit process, which has led to our inability to secure valuable flying contracts

And then there was Baby BMI.

I'd guess the offshore wind farms don't piss the money in quite the same way as the offshore oil and gas platforms.

Money has dried up, along with the oil.

The Arabs set the price of oil; governments in Europe set the price of MW/hour.

BMI was big in that market.

So the failing of Air Berlin and many others in Germany Switzerland and else where in Europe are because of Brexit - good good - Same note as Nissan saying Brexit is fault that new model is ot being built in England - it is not the fact that diesel does not sell anymore as in example VW has lost Euro 11 billion this year due to down fall of diesel and fines

Yes Brexit is all to blame and the Leavers will all rot in Hell

Anyone booking flights this year. Practise some risk mitigation and book with an EU registered airline.

The U.K. is slowly getting squeezed and U.K. airlines will spit the pips first. I mean Fly BMI have not even tried to hide the reasons for their difficulties. Every U.K. airline has the same issues and in the event of a no deal, any flights deemed to be over and above last years (2018) schedule allowances will not happen.

They didn't though! They said it was a factor.

Like the many small European airlines that have gone under in the last eighteen months, they all cute high fuel costs as being the main reason.

Too many seats, not enough people.

In the same way remainers will Probably see the brecut effect, leavers will always be saying it has nothing to do with it.

It’s true, poorly run businesses will always risk going out of business. But a low margin domestic business, with exposure to the dollar, and in an industry which is overseen by RU regulators, probably hasn’t found brexit has helped their cause.

And regardless of how well run it is, there still job losses. And any loss is a loss of competition. So its a bad outcome regardless.

Dear Remainers

Please do not worry - Soon you will not be able to blame anyone for "leaving". If you had ever bothered to look at the state of the Italian, French and German banks then you would suddenly start thinking.

Prime example BNP Paribas "own" Euro 146 billion of Italian state debt still at the same "old" Capital Weighting (for the understand at the same price as they bought them) as in 2009/10.

Most banks outside of the EU have written down Italian State Debt to 50% of the market value, just like the only UK bank Barclays (Holding Euro 17 billion).

The domino effect of one Italian bank failing will crash the others as most Italian banks are holding massive positions of Italian state papers - resulting into a big spill over on to the French banks (In total Euro 289 billion in Italian "junk state bonds"), then why we go to German where Deutsche Bank on the brink of going into a melt down is holding Euro 23 billion and Commerzbank holding Euro 12 billion and poor old Volkswagen Bank holding Euro 5 billion.

The German government has already stated they would not step in to help their banks - but think the biggest two banks in Germany in melt down and the state not stepping in ? If they do they are running "against" existing EU laws so then the German and French goverment are "punished".

So dear Remainers do you honestly think politics dictate the daily "life" in the world ?

Answer "No" -- As Liza Minnelli sang

Money... Money

Money makes the world go around

...the world go around

...the world go around.

Money makes the world go around

It makes the world go 'round.

A mark, a yen, a buck or a pound

...a buck or a pound

...a buck or a pound.

Is all that makes the world go around

That clinking, clanking sound...

And not stupid bickering politics "Remain /Leave" all that is secondary when the Euro starts falling through the Market Floors when the Hedge Funds suddenly wake up and start short selling Italian State papers....

Then it's Liza and her great song...NOTHING else ... So stop bickering and blaming

thats true... if your costs have gone up lets, 20% on fuel, because the pound has gone down 20% against the us dollar (flight fuel is priced in us dollars) then your margins are going to shrink.....

remember how brexiters like centy talking about how the devaluation of the pound was a good thing.... well here is a living consequence of that "good thing"!

BMI have basically been in trouble for a while.... the consequences of rising costs and brexit (whether brexiteers like it or not) sent it over the edge... they could not get the european contracts they were looking for to try and survive because didn't know the circumstances of which they would be flying....

the next domino to fall may well be Fly Be if their virgin rescue package is not approved......

To be fair, that doesn't necessarily follow.

I don't think anyone is saying that BMI has collapsed solely because of BREXIT. Even the air line itself is saying there are other factors too. However, in a situation of a strong head wind of bad trading conditions for all airlines, the extra uncertainty added by BREXIT (especially an unclear BREXIT) will not have helped.

i didn't blame it all on brexit.....

if the overall conditions aren't good at the moment for the smaller airline carriers..... add those plus added

I bet Freddy Laker would have loved to have had BREXIT to blame when his airline went bust.

The little guys often fail in high risk businesses like airlines. I don’t envisage Richard Branson going bust anytime soon. Way too big, way too strong. He will moan about BREXIT, but only because of his EU investments.

"Scottish based Logan Air is planning to take on some of FlyBMI routes.

The sensitive Londonderry route is also likely to be retained, albeit with a new operator and continued Government subsidy."

Loganair is a teeny-weeny outfit.

Used to have the Flybe franchise for the routes to and from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

They split and started up an alliance with BMI.

"An average of 18 ppl on there planes and remainers blame brexit not empty seats ?

I thought "remainers" are just commenting on BMI's statement, unless BMI never mentioned Brexit which in that case you would be correct. bmi also failed to mention they average 18 seats to a plane maybe that’s why they mentioned brexit to take away the focus on how shit they are just a thought

As I said passenger numbers are probably the main cause with Brexit the final nail. "

& of course, Brexit has been impacting for 2 1/2 years, we are only now seeing the culmination and impact on businesses - sadly with much more to come. Brexit is extraordinarily damaging to the UK economy

Why the final nail? i would say having an average of 18 passengers per flight was enough for anyone to go under brexit or not, cant see air berlin being quoted as going under due to brexit.

Why argue the point of what BMI themselves have said against me lol.

"

Current trading and future prospects have also been seriously affected by the uncertainty created by the Brexit process, which has led to our inability to secure valuable flying contracts in Europe and lack of confidence around bmi's ability to continue flying between destinations in Europe.

"

Taken from BMI's own statement, not mine

Final nail normally means a line of factors that have been pointing in one direction & the last factor that takes you beyond the point of no return is normally called the final nail. BMI's final nail is Brexit.

But hey, argue away that it's bullshit if that makes you feel better mate

You say Brexit has been impacting on jobs over the last 2 1/2 years, and yet the UK has record high employment rates and the lowest unemployment figures since the 1970's.

which is an interesting word salad as a general statement... but means zero on the actual topic of the airline industry...

fact is your beloved "pound devaluation" meant that the airlines fuel costs went up..... i know you hate "facts" but thats a reality!

that didn't help....

so when you recognise some of the effects that brexit did cause... then you can have an actual conversation

You have your view mate, I just take what they say in their statement.

I've no need or agenda to twist or unilaterally decide to change their reason for doing what their doing.

Why admit Brexit is causing damage to the economy when you can slip n turn the topic away from something you cannot hope to win.

Yes record employment yet the UK has lost approximately £800 million a week due to the Brexit referendum and continuing farce.

So employment up, yet massive lost income to the economy

"There are some remainers that will blame anything negative on brexit it happens all the time on here.

Even when the company closes citing Brexit as the main reason. Brexiteers still don’t believe it. "

1 bmi did not cite it as the main reason, just one of the reasons,

And 2 anyone with an interest or job in aviation has watched bmi slowly decline ever since michael bishop walked away .

I for one am surprised they lasted this long

see... thats the thing... no one here is solely blaming brexit, well no one on the remain side anyway...

what they are saying is that in a world of small margins, brexit certainly hasn't help because it meant uncertainty over european contracts and increased fuel costs.... add that with other factors and yes it has made for a mess!

i think the interesting thing is that our most ardent leavers here trying to say that brexit played zero part in the process, which is a silly thing to say!

And also interesting is our ardent remainers will simply take the word of BMI directors as gospel. When was the last time you’ve seen the directors of a failed company admit it was their fault. “ uncertainty over european contracts and increased fuel costs”. Have they named a contract they’ve lost because of Brexit ? As for increased fuel costs, maybe they should’ve looked into Fuel hedging. I voted to remain, it annoys me when people try and blame everything on Brexit.

It annoys me when people cite Brexit as a factor and others twist that in to the people blaming the whole thing on Brexit.

Brexit in this case is only be classed as a factor and is not being blamed as the whole reason but obviously some are having difficulty understanding that simple concept.

Passing through Bristol Airport yesterday and 8 flights on the screen showing “cancelled”.

All BMI departures.

Four aircraft sat on the tarmac doing nothing.

All BMI.

Sad.

The question you are not answering is why you believe Honda when it says their decision has nothing to do with Brexit but not Nissan, BMI, Airbus, JLR or the NFU when they say that Brwxit is a significant contribution to their decisions or a threat to their business?

I will accept all of their statements at face value as I don't have access to all of the information available to them.

It's the simple fact leavers outright dismiss any statement that says Brexit is bad for a business but shout from the rooftops agreeing when one company says Brexit wasn't a factor.

It's the Brexit effect
