"Liam Fox has categorically refused to rule out a reduction of import tariffs to zero on the import of ceramics and pottery into the U.K. The British Ceramic Federation has warmed of a catastrophe in the potteries if cheap imports from China, India and Brazil are allowed to flood the U.K. market. On the other hand, carpetbagging importers see an opportunity to get rid of U.K. pottery protected status via our exit from the EU and give people the ability to buy cheaper alternatives than the over-priced domestic products. Tbf fox said this wasn’t his preferred option but it would be a government decision, not his. So I guess it’s jit in his gift to rule it out" But is it not the Brexit mantra as enshrined in the Patrick Minford book of Brexit economics? Get rid of the common EU external tariff and give the UK an edge by unilaterally reducing import tariffs to zero? I thought this was the actual plan... Give everyone cheap shit to buy and fuck domestic manufacturing? The people of Stoke voted overwhelmingly in favour of Brexit and seemingly all Brexiters knew exactly what they were voting for, so they must have been planning all along for the demise of their local pottery business. Another big Brexit win.

"One minute your arguing for a zero tariff single market, next your slagging somebody off for having a tariff free market, which is it?" IMO negotiated agreements which are mutually beneficial are a good thing. Especially if they can be used to reduce friction, and increase standards. One way, blanket free tarrifs decisions will cause big issuess. However I think the bigger benefit from the EU is frictionless trade.

Oh, wait a minute . . . | |||

"And key to this, is it’s true even under Mays deal. It’s not just WTO. Although WTO would involve us putting deals in place rather than the EU “instructing” the third parties to pretend we’re in the EU (note: this is the EU leveraging their weight in our behalf. Not us being all independent.)" How dare they? The mantra has been that the EU has been nothing but unhelpful!

"Here’s a spanner in the works. The EU and UK agree they want to roll over the 40-odd trade agreements between the EU and 71 countries into the transition period. At a business briefing yesterday, Fox’s department refused to say how many or ready to go, or which ones, on March 30. They cannot be rolled over automatically, however. The EU can ask 71 countries to trade with UK as if it were a member. But the 71 countries have to agree. So far, we have seen DIT announce continuity agreements with important trading partners like the Faroe Islands. If you are a business trading with the rest of the world, you still have no idea what those terms will be on March 30. " It was on BBC Newsnight about this last night. Liam Fox signed continuity trade agreement with Switzerland yesterday. The government and the department for international trade said they will have 90% of the continuity trade agreements signed before March 29th, the remaining 10% to follow shortly after.
