Plenty "fake news" posted on this site, too. Are you going to report admin to the social media police for allowing it?

Fake news/misleading as are wrong whoever posts it. We need better regulation of social media adverts.

It’s not clear the whole 300k was on fake news. Be intersting to see a breakdown. (May be in telegraph article tbf but it’s fire walled).

"Yeah, I heard the same. But the leave campaign was all lies and fake. "

fair point.... leave campaign failed in the appeal in the UK high court to get the findings of the Electorial Commission reversed ( thats the one saying they broke campaign rules by overspending.....)

and who said the UK Courts had no power.......

I've seen loads from the other side, Katie Hopkins telling lies about asylum seekers, Poland reducing the retirement age to 60, illegal imigrants being entitled to benefits and imigrants receiving 29 grand in benefits compared to a pentioner getting 4 grand. Three I've seen in the past 2 weeks all have been easy proved wrong yet they still appear.

I've seen a lot of people repost so some must or they are deliberately spread in lies.

This has mainly been about immigration from the leave side. I never saw the post mentioned in the OP.

None of that suggests the story in the OP is false though. Are you saying the story in the OP is false?"

I'm saying the sources you constantly use are some of the least credible in UK Journalism and you should maybe read a broader range.

I actually do read the Daily Express from time to time as my work place get it.

It's a laughable read, it usually contradicts it's self from page to page.

You are correct. The Telegraph too.

Interestingly they both say that they are accused of publishing fake news. The only "evidence" is Gove and Fox' "word"

Yet the earlier story from the Express contradicts what they say.

Nowhere I’ve seen has said the people’s vote has used “fake news”’so anyone say 300k has been spent on fake news should back that up, of themselves are spreading porkies.

Also, 90k by leave campaigns? I can see one group that has spent 95k. And another which have spent 12k.

Hmmm. Fake news ?

From rationalwiki obvious not a serious link but it describes accurately at the a user on heres ideas:

"The online version of the Daily Express seems to attract many readers with usernames and avatars suggesting an interest in 1930s German politics or Nordic warriors, or simply a hyper-patriotic enthusiasm for England. Their comments are a charming melange of support for far right sentiment and a perfectly reasonable and understandable dislike of non-English human beings [21]. Articles about refugees attempting to reach Britain invariably draw comments suggesting that the most sensible and practical solutions would be a high wall bristling with barbed wire (and machine guns and landmines) around the entire British coastline, equipping coastguard ships with machine guns and the authority to riddle boats and refugees with bullets, fitting swords to the wheels of Channel Tunnel trains, allowing refugees to enter the Channel Tunnel on foot before deliberately flooding it, and one particularly imaginative suggestion; filling the English Channel with sharks and crocodiles "

"Its been revealed that Facebook has allowed Fake news stories funded by two Remain campaigns The Peoples Vote UK and Open Britain on its website. The Peoples Vote UK and Open Britain paid Facebook hundreds of thousands of pounds (exactly £373,587.00) to run the anti Brexit fake news ads.

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/01/18/facebook-accused-pumping-fake-news-running-ads-claiming-endangered

www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1074569/brexit-news-facebook-fake-news-endangered-animals-michael-gove-liam-fox-best-for-britain

...and paying to run an add is fairly standard practice

To be clear they paid to run fake news ads. Is that standard practice for the Peoples vote campaign and the Open Britain remain campaign.

It's only fake news according to the Express that previously said that it...er...wasn't

There were 2 links posted in the OP. It's also fake news according to the Telegraph.

Links for this!?

Did you have one too many on that visit to the pub? The 2 links are on the opening post on this thread. One to the Telegraph and one to the Express. Best not to post with your beer goggles on in future.

They are impermissible as stated above!

You must have a pretty bad hangover this morning. Was it a heavy night on the beer?

The 2 links to 2 separate news sources are on the opening post on this thread.

From 2 suspect publications, can we have the original report? or another paper. As stated above the one of the publications you use seems to recycle the other.

Facebook ad link report.

Can we link to Facebook ?

It’s where I got my numbers to show leave spent more than the quoted 90k.

You can try.. I won't report you...not my style.

You're really not very bright are you. You don't have to hit the report button for a moderator to see something. Moderators are often trawling the forums and reading threads without reports. Moderators post on threads and engage in discussions themselves.

This sounds like a confession.

A confession of what?

It's just stating a fact that moderators often have a nosey around the forums. "

No idea, just sounds defensive.

You know full well (or you should do by now) it would be against fab forum rules to post a link to the original report and it would be against fab forum rules to post a link directly to Facebook. Have you taken any paracetamol for your hangover yet? "

I’m assuming therefore you’ve taken a look at the page yourself. Any thoughts on my take ?

They aren't fake though.

Both articles say that they have been accused of being fake but the "evidence" is that Gove and Fox say that they are.

However, there is an Express article saying just the opposite which you have still failed to comment on. Which Express article is true and which is fake?

Are you in a contradictory loop? Cannot compute?

The only fact in the article is how much money is being spent on remain advertising on Facebook with an unsupported implication that it's "fake"

Screen shots of the fake news ads on Facebook are posted on the Telegraph report.

I've searched and can only find the Express article. I'm struggling to find the Telegraph report searching google.

What did you search for?

You don't need to find the Telegraph report on Google. It's linked on the opening post on this thread.

I know, I'm wonder how you found it? As when I search it doesn't come up.

Well it came up on my Google search very easily.

What did you type in? I want to try it.

All you need to know is I found it and it's posted on the opening post of this thread. If you want to look at it then use the link in the OP.

Are you deflecting? I sense you may have lied somewhere.

Some would passing alleged news as fact 'not very bright.'

Some would also allege that if you don't know how to use Google, makes you 'not very bright'. "

Seriously if you did type what was it?

The article doesn't appear to have meta tags when I look at the source and that's usually how google searches.

This is strange as I'd presume the paper would want such a big story to be be on search engines and not just for people who are already on the site.

The social media giant has been paid hundreds of thousands of pounds by Britain’s two most prominent Remain campaign groups to stir up support for a second referendum.

Latest figures released by the Facebook show the two organisations - People’s Vote UK and Best for Britain - spent £373,587 on Facebook ads in the run up to the parliamentary vote on Theresa May’s defeated Brexit deal.

By contrast, Leave-supporting groups spent a little over £93,000, according to an analysis by the Telegraph of political income disclosed by Facebook.

I can't disagree but it's called free choice and we all have the ability to log out.

As I pointed out above when Angela Merkel was caught talking to mark Zuckerberg on an open mic it really is about control of the masses.

Again, interesting detour.

I would have guessed centaur found the articles through just reading the papers. Or having a news aggregator or the like.

But it distracts the thread from the story or the quality of the journalism.

Also is ok for you to do pretty similar things to me questioning my reasoning implying I was d*unk. I don't think it ended well for you.

Look at Emma's post on the other thread 'is this true' it'll give you an indication of how stupid she was earlier.

"I think facebook should be closed down it is a discusting site anyway

Thanks for your personal opinion.

It's a public forum so personal opinions are very welcome. If you don't like it you're free to take those kind of childish sarcastic comments elsewhere.

You got what you googled yet or are we putting you down as a liar?

Also is ok for you to do pretty similar things to me questioning my reasoning implying I was d*unk. I don't think it ended well for you.

Look at Emma's post on the other thread 'is this true' it'll give you an indication of how stupid she was earlier.

I've already posted on the other thread after Emma, slow coach. Do try to keep up.

So,what did you Google or were you lying?

The more you ask the less inclined I am to say to be perfectly honest. The fact is I found it on Google and that's how I managed to post the link on the OP.

Ok, I'll put you down as a liar then.

It's even more amusing that you actually think I give a shit what you think about me.

If you don't answer then others too must question your credibility. The fact you tried to let this thread die for 4hrs when I asked for earlier tells me all I need to know.

Those 4 hours I was missing is that thing people call a social life again. "

You were posting on other threads so not an argument

"Its been revealed that Facebook has allowed Fake news stories funded by two Remain campaigns The Peoples Vote UK and Open Britain on its website. The Peoples Vote UK and Open Britain paid Facebook hundreds of thousands of pounds (exactly £373,587.00) to run the anti Brexit fake news ads.

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/01/18/facebook-accused-pumping-fake-news-running-ads-claiming-endangered

...and paying to run an add is fairly standard practice

Remainer Paddy Ashdown speaking just before the votes were counted on EU referendum day, 23rd June 2016.

Has Paddy ever said that the will of the people should be ignored?

Paddy Ashdown stood up in the House of Lords and encouraged other Lords to vote against the EU Withdrawal bill, so in essence yes he did say the will of the people should be ignored when he did that. Ashdown's face was a picture when a pro Brexit Lord stood up and quoted what Paddy had said about Democracy on EU referendum day in 2016 before votes were counted.

The European Withdrawal Act gave secondary legislative powers to Ministers to introduce laws without Parliamentary scrutiny.

That was not saying that the will of the people should be ignored. Quite the opposite.

Paddy Ashdown was quite old when he said this. Does your criticism of him mean you hate old people Centaur?"

Now you've highlighted this it also shows remain voters are passing away over time as well. Paddy Ashdown was a remainer and is no longer with us. You posted the "Brexit crossover thread" about old people dying, you can own it.

"I will forgive no one, who doesn't accept the democratic choice of the British people, whether it's by 1% or 20% because the British people are sovereign, and when they speak we carry out their wish, the British people demand it of us"

So you're lying about your social life to you utter idiot.

The time stamp on that says 11 hours ago. Do you have any toes left after shooting yourself in the foot.

Read the posts above! See what I've said

I have and you are way out. Instead of counting on your fingers try using a calculator.

12hrs ago I asked you a question...the thread went silent for 4hrs I posted 8hrs ago.

I pointed out that you let this thread die for 4hrs without answer the question you said... It was your social life.

I then pointed out you posted 11 hrs ago 1 hrs into your 4 hrs of social life.

Do you understand now?

I went out at around 6pm for 4 hours so got back home around 10pm. That was 7 hours ago, not 11 hours. I didn't post on here between 6pm and 10pm. I just explained to you in an earlier post your 11 hours ago minus 4 hours out still left 7 hours to spare! You're making yourself look very foolish here.

No,because the period you let the thread die was 12 hrs ago....can you not read?

FFS I just gave you the exact times I was out. It was 7 hours ago, not 11 or 12. You can't read let alone add or subtract. I'm done arguing over petty points with you anyway, got work in the morning. Oh and thanks for constantly bumping my thread about Remain Fake news on Facebook to the top of the forum all day.

I'm not, I've given you everything you needed to understand and you've chosen not to..I said you let this thread die for 4hrs with an open question, I didn't reference a time you then said you were out for 4 hrs!

I pointed out you posted in another thread an hour into that time.

If you looked back on the thread it was 12 now 13 hrs ago it wasn't my fault you weren't bothered to look up and check the times.

If you were out for 4 hrs it wasn't the 4 hrs you are referring to.

To make it clear to you you didn't answer between about 12:00 and 16:00 but posted at about 13:00 in another thread"

You then said you were out for 4 hrs from 18:00 till 22:00 which wasn't the 4 hrs the thread was dead after my question. Seriously just look above you're an idiot.

Centaur posting fake news about alleged "fake" remain news in every forum thread at the moment.

Still not able to comment on why the Express is contradicting itself and which of its own articles is fake news

Interesting.

This is an Express article on the same subject last year. Slightly different perspective. Which is fake?

Curioser and curiouser:

I think we’re at three possibilities.

1) centaur came across the article from being an express reader.

2) he read about it in another forum (say) and googled specific terms after to find out more (like I did)

3) he entered specific terms by chance (which imply a risk of confirmation bias imo)

Note really the point of this thread tho....

Back to the OP and fake news.

Is there any evidence the people’s vote has spread fake news ? The articles seem light on this, yet use both campaigns when getting to the 350k...

If none, is this approach close to fake news as some will link the two stories and start to say 350k has been soent in fake news...

If we just look at the second group (who spent c 170k, was this entirely on fake news or was it just a few (as they ran who ran nearly 700 ad campaigns)

Why did they quote 90k spent by leaver groups when one group (britains future) have spent this? And with two other groups (inc we are the 52% so obviously brexit) I get to near 120k.

(Caveat Britain’s first seem to be spending a lot atm so there may be timing differences)

What analysis did they do on the leave ads (given they don’t seem to be aware they exist) to give a balanced article.

The whole article feels disingenuous at best imo. Ironic in a fake news article.

Facebook should stamp any FAKE news as "Fake" and remove within 72 hours. Some form of punishment too - fine etc. This applies to EITHER SIDE- all we want is the truth! We deserve the TRUTH!

Probably easier said than done. You will only be able to stamp out lies, and not the ambiguous stuff. Clever campaigns will get around this by just enough suggestion.

I think we need to hold our media to account before we start addressing Fb ads.

Something like a fact checker at the end of news bulletins- anything found to be fake "named and shamed " - paid for by the government!

That's the point.

Even these two articles say that the remain adverts "are accused" of being fake news.

Anyone can make an accusation and anyone cam then report on the accusation.

It's just innuendo.

Tart filling facility

Does anyone take Farcebook posts as fact anyway? (Aside from guardian readers who will believe anything as long as it's left of left)?

No wonder that rag has the lowest sales of any of the papers.

The media seem to be trying to control politics, research everything of interest thoroughly, whether it's Farcebook, papers, forums or TV/radio.

The sad thing in this case is how remain are trying to portray Britain as being weak, useless, lazy, thick, etc..

In reality the IMF are saying that a no deal scenario will result in Britain having the biggest g7 growth in Europe for 2019/2020.

False advertising would be the thing to report it on, though all Farcebook are concerned about are $$'s and harvesting our information so don't expect much there.

I agree that Facebook should not be used as a news source.

Beyond that your statement is pretty fanciful.

Only Guardian readers believe it? Based on what?

Remain portraying the UK as weak? The entire leave campaign is based on us being bullied by other EU countries and having no control or say in anything which is clearly false.

Looking at a situation critically has nothing to do with "doing the country down". You can't make change or process without looking at yourself honestly and seeing how the world looks at you. Do you disagree? Is everything great here? If not, what are the problems and what are the good points? Start a thread. If you can't find anything negative then you aren't being honest and vice versa.
