What’s so bad about Mays deal?

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

In the face of maybe a record breaking defeat, why is Mays deal so bad.

It delivers on the democratic will of the people as asked in the referendum question.

It provides a solution for ireland.

It has support from businesses.

It’s economic impact is smaller than WTO by most accounts.

So why the hate? Especially from leavers.

Please answer using specific factual statements. And not second guess why people voted leave. Or at leasg acknowledge you are second guessing (eg we don’t know if all leave voters were anti FoM)

Go !

For a lot of Leavers, it's a sort of "half in/half out" sort of deal.

We know that many Remainers wouldn't accept any kind of deal, so it's largely immaterial to them.

The Leave side seems to be driven the hardest by the rabid 10% on the right of the equation.

I realise this isn’t your answer (thanks for providing a template bad answer!) but for others, this is the kind of wish washy answer I’m asking not to give. It’s fully out (as per ref) and you would need to define why you think the majority would dislike the bits that are “half in”

Nothing...

Other than it gives away every benefit of being a full member of the EU while we get to keep all the restrictions of membership of the single market (including having to contribute to the EU budget) while loosing the ability to influence decisions.

cake......... simple answer

the problem is the tory "taliban"

people told by there leaders they would be able to have their cake and eat it, they would get everything and give up nothing, they needed us more than we needed them, the EU would come to us on their hands and knees and grovel....

unfortunately life..... it doesn't work like that!

in the midst of there message last time they ran on hope but forgot about detail.... and detail basically came back to bite them in the arse!

for the most hardline nothing was ever going to be acceptable other than blowing the whole thing up (we have seen that here)

Personally I could hardly give a fuck any more which I guess is what TM is hoping for. Hopefully 630 odd MPs might think the same LOL.

Totally cannot be arsed to waste any more of my precious breath over it.

Just take the deal and shut the fuck up. I am sick to death of it. Rant over and it's Tuesday. Isn't Tuesday rant day ? or is that thursday. Oh well Who gives a fuck.

What is bad with it?

It doens't allow remain or wto rules as options and it doesn't put the opposition into power.

From what I can make out from JC, environmental protection and workers rights aren't protected (although we are signed into the Paris Accord. I don't know about the latter). The Irish issue, May gave a date of Dec 2020 for trade agreements being made ready by (or as close to).

I do wonder is MP's have read the 500 page text or if they are going along with their nearest colleagues opinion.

It is simply a further exercise of kicking the van down the road. Also, because of the tardy and unprofessional way that she has gone about negotiating the political declaration that runs alongside it is not the pathway to future “close and special relationship” and is instead a simple wish list.

In short, it is a blind Brexit withdrawal agreement that fails her own red line of also coming with clarity and certainty about the future.

Because David Cameron said if we vote to leave we leave the customs union ECJ

Not let’s negoite a deal where we pay £39 billion without knowing what we will get in return

Surely if DC said it, it should have been dismissed as project war, not taken as a promise.

Do you think everyone who voted leave wanted out of the CU?

How come the tories were voted in when they talked about a customs union?

It wouldn’t even pay the interest on the money borrowed by Osborne and Hammond since 2010.

Leavers voted for Brexit, the deal the Prime Minister has negotiated is Brexit

I decided 2.5 years Brexit was going to be a stale cold turd and many leavers now see that Brexit is the stale cold turd that it actually is.

The "people" voted for it so they should be spoon fed it. Its the only proper option.

Are you personally going to pay the families you want to repatriate to go home(as you would call it)?

You do realise that was a joke echoing a 1964 note left for Labour from the Tories don't you?

"Why don't the people who voted in volunteer to pay the 39 billion?."

Given the per capita contribution I’d be open to paying double to make up for leavers opting out. Provided those who don’t pay get no benefit. Maybe only those who pay can get on flights which would not be flying without the agreement. Get a rebate of any tarrifs paid on imports etc.

Sorry, can you remind me who has set taxation and spending rates since 2010?

Who has borrowed more money in the last 9 years than every single Labour chancellor combined?

Who has had the power and the levers to balance the books these last 9 years, but chose not to, preferring instead to reduce taxation for the wealthiest by removing funding from the weakest?

Go fund me page, it might go someway to healing the divide your all feeling, there'd certainly feel you less traitorous no doubt.

Me personally I couldn't care either way, it was just a suggestion for the firm stay/leave camp.

Those days are a bit outdated, we use the internet now .

Besides that was my opinion on how best to avoid conflict, I doubt we'd ever see it.

I agree. Hold people to account. Just has to work both ways.

Each year everyone chooses to pay the EU tax. And shares in any benefit

I think the biggest problem with it that she is trying to force it down MP's throats and she should have consulted more with members of both labour and conservative members and got a deal worded in the right way so as to please enough MP's to get a majority, common sense would have done this, she seems to live in a world of her own and no prime minister has ever got away with that, even the most powerfull of modern times in Thatcher and Blair. They ruled, got to arrogant and fell this woman was arrogant from day one very very stupid.
