Fair few people, including Piers Morgan seem outraged at Greggs at the moment.

Might go down to Greggs and try one.

Veggie or vegan “sausage rolls” have been around for years. I guess they labelled them as “vegan sausage rolls” as it describes to product.

the ironic bit is these rolls have almost the same fat content in them as a meat sausage roll .so that's the health aspect down the swanee for a start

The rules and regs on vegan production are very strict. They will have to have separated systems from raw materials intake through to the point where finished goods are combined, as long as at this point they are wrapped (as there is then no likelihood of cross-contamination from there on).

The actual production process will be in an area completely separate from the rest of the factory, with strict rules on hygiene, cleaning, and the movement of people. For example, there may be people employed only for vegan production, protective clothing may be a different colour to other production areas, certainly separate changing and possibly isolated staff welfare facilities, etc..... Possibly even as far as having completely separate water, compressed air, drainage, and separate ventilation systems.

Effectively, they would treat it more strictly than dealing with an allergen that is not used elsewhere, only without the caveat on packaging of "may contain..."

The production facility may even be completely separate from other production areas (eg, could be on the same site, but not physically connected).

To be honest because of the strict rules about producing and handling vegan food I am surprised that Greggs are able to sell anything with a 'vegan' label attached to it and I will not be surprised if in the near future they find themselves falling foul of the law when they are found to be cross contaminating vegan products with animal products as I am sure they have not fitted their shops with vegan only ovens, prep areas and vegan only serving staff.
