is it a worthy organisation? Seeing as it doesn't seem to hold anything or anyone to account

Well, it's worked a heck of lot better than what went before it.

Sorry, thout she was joking as in "better than nothing" is the UN an improvement?

The reason i ask is if they

condemn the uk government on their austerity measures and the impact on increasing poverty and hunger in the 5th wealthiest country and yet can't do anything about it,

The UN does exactly what it was set up to do.

It is not a sovereign body, but a forum for 190+ sovereign states to co-ordinate a global response.

Climate change, famine, child education, non-proliferation and so on.

And where consensus exists on threats to regional or global security, it creates a legal mandate or framework within which states and coalitions can act militarily within the rule of law.

The UN is a bit like the EU - it is what the member states make of it.

Which is probably why the Donald doesn’t like it or want it in his country - because it raises difficult questions and allows all nations to voice their opinions so his solution is to not pay his share and really he would love to charge the UN for that shameful waste of real estate they occupy in NYC. Perhaps if they renamed it the Donald Trump Making America Great Again United hotel and plaza he might be more interested. It’s going to be fantastic it really is!

Well here is a coincidence :

In the 1930's when it was the League of Nations - Hitler pulled out Germany (before WW2)!

The issue i have, is they (the UN) and its members, the USA and UK break international law on a routine basis!

I am not sure about what came before it, I am certainly no expert, but the work on the ground that they do can be very effective at saving many, many lives. The UN tends to make the news when it buggers up, Rwanda for instance, but there are people working on the ground today that mean the difference between life and death for many.

I met a UN worker from South Sudan a couple of weeks ago who was bemoaning the politics, waste of money and inertia that are trademarks of her organisation. I asked her and her colleague what would happen if the left tomorrow. Without hesitation they both agreed 2-3 million dead within the year. So, a bit like the NHS, lots of waste, not enough spent on prevention, but it's much better than nothing.

Finally, any organisation that aspires to put all nations in the same building to work for more peace has got to be worth a go.
