So now the EU will be failing in 5 years time, would that be like the 5 years of austerity it would take to eliminate the deficit?

LOL

You guys have been predicting the demise of the EU/EC/EEC within the next 5 years since 1975. You remind me of those people we see wandering around with their good book in one hand, wearing a sandwich board saying "the end of the world is nigh". I guess, like them, you may be right one day.

Well seeing as the home guard have been well and truly routed (maggotty mogg) perhaps we should do what private Godfrey would have done....make a nice cup of tea and have a sit down. Don’t panic!

It's clearly better to be in the EU for a whole range of reasons. Firstly, as Brexit has damaged the UK economy, there's an opportunity for this damage to be reversed. The UK can be fully subject to the European Courts, for sensible legal judgements, often against the UK government. It's better for the UK to be within the EU, so that it can shape its decisions, rather than just to be subject to them too. The UK is never likely to be able to get such a good deal from membership as it currenyly has - whilst it may be able to rejoin, the current deal won't be on offer.

The rag-bag bunch of Conservative politicians who have sabotaged their brexit progress are largely vermin - politics would be better if it were free of them. That some now publicly admit that continued EU membership is better, highlights something that millions have known from the start - brexiters were expecting something that was impossible. The EU has many trade deals already in force, that the UK benefits from - the sad expectation that the UK could almost instantly conjure many up that would be as good, has now been realised as fantasy. Major challenges now face the country, including climate change and these are better faced by collective action.

As a pragmatic Leaver, I have to agree.

Stop in, enjoy the economic "bounce" and fight for change within.

I've said for months that the current vision of Brexit pleases no-one. Brexit is a word that doesn't even begin to explain the complexities of the actuality.

So what do you mean by short term - 6 months?

Please stop this delusional belief that the EU failing will be great for us. The contagion would affect us significantly - in fact it would make the banking crisis

We would have been a member of the EU in 1963 But france vetoed the uk's application. We were granted membership 10 years later.

Why was the eu formed in the first place in 1957 !!! In the hope and understanding that. the eu members who were trading and doing business with each other. would not go to war with each other. Absolutely FAB. As that has maintained peace.

Eu member countries people can travel and migrate freely. The spanner in the works now is !!! Migrants from north Africa and Asia have entered Europe. Raping and pillaging. Causing civil unrest, and the do gooders are dividing the nations and its people.

Just look at the fucking mess Germany and Sweden and other countries are in. The English channel has kept most of the migrants out, that have a hidden agenda. London is already under attack from thugs, drug gangs and people traffickers.

Radicals do not believe in diversity and transparency. Unite under one party, to save this country from the invasion of people who wish to do us harm. As America should.

United we stand. Divided we fall.

The EU did not exist in 1963, nor did it exist in 1973. It was founded on 1st November 1993 by the Maastrict treaty.

What we joined in the 1970's was the Common Market - or the European Economic Community to give it it's proper name.

"Flimsy answer ...tk u ...i must learn more in future ...un elected more refers to the eu great leaders that seem to make such great decisions for us all "

Again flimsy

My question was which countries did a forum member object to - specific.

You ramble in with a load of "waffle" - and as stated it was not directed at you either. You had to put your oar in, but like most of your posts, a rambling none specific answer! If you have to poke your nose in, then at least have the decency to submit a specific answer! So which specific countries don't you like and why? If a country is joining the EU it will have completed a process endorsed by the people of that country to join! Finally, Your reference to unelected officials (if you've said it once, you've said it 100 times), -is the EU commissioners - well each elected sovereign state has elected a government, who in turn selects the best person to represent its sovereign affairs on the commission. Given the shit that's happened in the referendum, yes it's a much better system than letting people vote - it stops the likes of you from causing chaos!

Very good article in the Economist this weekend explaining how the "no-deal" Brexit sought by some would be the most damaging thing to happen to the UK since World War Two.

What we joined in 1960, when we joined EFTA, was a free trade area.

A free trade is where all the trade barriers among the members are removed. So, all members are free to import and export goods and services among themselves. However thr members continue to maintain independent trade policies with non-member countries.

What we joined in 1973 was a Common Market

In a common market, the members eliminate internal trade barriers, adopt common external trade barriers and allow free movement of resources, such as goods, capital and labour, among member countries.

What we have now is an Economic Union.

In an economic union, members eliminate internal barriers, adopt common external barriers, allow free movement of resources, and adopt a uniform set of economic policies.

If BREXIT was about going back to a Common Market then we would still be having free movement of Labour. If BREXIT was about having a genuinely free trade area with the EU/EC/EEC (as we have done since 1960) then we would be applying for membership of EFTA.

The reality is is that BREXIT is about over turning the democratic will of the people, as expressed by parliament in 1972 and the first referendum in 1975, by telling them that something fundamental has changed when, if you look at the difference between a Common Market and an Economic Union, nothing fundamental has changed at all. In 1973 we had free movement of goods, capital and labour. It's quite simply just another BREXIT lie to mislead the people to say otherwise.

I think you have a point there. I don't know anyone personally who actually fought in either WWI or WWII who was anti EU/EC/EEC (that's not to say there were not some but only that I didn't know any). However I know a lot of people in there 70s and 80s, who lived through the war and its immediate aftermath that bang on about the war all the time and are very anti German and European.

In 1972 people voted for a very diferent kind of EU,it was about free trade not about a Euro state that exists now, also it was 8 countries in those days.

There would never have been a referendum if the EU had been as it is today.

We voted out for free trade this time, last time we voted in for free trade, the British want to be free and independent that is the fact

What we joined in the 1970's was the Common Market - or the European Economic Community to give it it's proper name.

In 1972 people voted for a very diferent kind of EU,it was about free trade not about a Euro state that exists now, also it was 8 countries in those days.

There would never have been a referendum if the EU had been as it is today.

We voted out for free trade this time, last time we voted in for free trade, the British want to be free and independent that is the fact"

We won the war but we lost an empire to the USA - we finally finished paying them back for the war loans they gave us during Tony Blair’s government. They were late into the war and reluctantly at that and if Pearl Harbour had not happened then I think they may well have aligned with Hitler because he was winning everything. The USA may hold a common language but they still portray most Englishmen as villains and through the actions of the CIA have caused huge amounts of turmoil around the world. The USA, Russia and China are all enormously powerful and self sufficient empires who find the EU an annoyance and a threat so they spend huge amounts of money destabilising its close neighbours and undermining the EU itself by electronic or trade means. Modern history is interesting and should be a core subject in my opinion as your sabre rattling about the Second World War is barely scratching the surface of what’s really going on in the world today.

"We would have been a member of the EU in 1963 But france vetoed the uk's application.

The British are free and independent whether in the EU or not. The people didn't vote for anything in 1972, the referendum was in 1975. The referendum in 1975 was not about whether we should be in a free trade area with the EEC, we'd been in a free trade area with the EEC via EFTA since 1960; it was about whether we should remain in a Common Market. As said a Common Market includes a single market, a customs union, and free movement of goods, services, capital and labour. The choice in the referendum in 1975 was exactly the same as the one in 2016. Neither were about some imaginary Euro Superstate, that has only ever existed in the minds of deluded, paranoid BREXITERS, who have spent far too much time for their own good researching daft conspiracy sites.

And if the EU/EC/EEC growing from 8 to 28 is a major problem how does moving from EU28 to WTO165 actually make that any better?

Once we leave fully we will all soon enough find out exactly where in the world pecking order we belong.

It definitely won't be any higher than we currently are.

It has been said that it took the other member states of the E.U. a total of 40 minutes to sign up to our agreement today ,,, I am guessing this was made up of 2 minutes putting pen to paper , 18 minutes of gleefully rubbing their hands together , 17 minutes of laughing and 3 minutes of thinking "is this really what the population of the U.K. voted for

Yes they did (those who bothered to vote), - you reap what you sow!

It has always amazed me throughout this process how happy the general leave voting population have been with how things are going. I mean, it is obvious that those that voted remain would be upset with how things are going, but why aren’t leave voters upset at the total clusterfuck going on? If you compare what they were promised to what is now happening, they are just as far away as the remain campaign are.

But for many, it was simply about poking the poshboys in the eye with a sharp stick, their payback for austerity. Job done.

If there is a mess, it is easy to view it as being of the politicians’ making.

"I have said it all the time, it comes after raab said mays brexit deal is not good and that is better to be in the eu, who else agrees? "

The vote to leave the EU was a bitter pill to swallow for many.

May’s Deal is shit. The only solution is joining the EFTA the only solution to brexit which both leavers and remainers can agree on.

Time to heal the wounds, time to work to a solution which will maintain our union. EFTA is the way.
