How would you view some politicians and others, if they honestly admitted mistakes, even if it had grave consequences for them, their party etc? Are we at a point where this should be happening? would you be different?

Heathrowish

When was the last time any politician apologised....left, right or centre?

Not sure you can single out any faction of self serving arsehole without recourse to another flavour of idiot?

I think politicians are especially poor at admitting their mistakes and our short-term outlook doesn't help that.

If there's a so-called apology, it will typically be qualified and very limited in its scope, almost as if passing something off as an accident - whereas they probably view the mistake or accident as getting caught out. Personal morality may be at a very low level widely and especially so amongst those who lead us today. Of course the public are influenced by and take the lead from those in power.

I'm not sure I'd have described Thatcher as centre right.

Any industry with a genuine culture of improvement fails early and does not blame but takes an error as learning.

Take civil aviation and medicine as exemplars.

The press, an intolerant and impatient electorate and the confrontational nature of politics makes this impossible in areas of public life.

I would applaud it but it doesn't work.

Look at the LibDems crucified for breaking one promise relative to a lifetime of lies from both the other major parties.

What always amazes me is how dogmatic some people are....the right is always wrong and the left is always correct.....or vice versa.

Sticking to the left/right blame game always means that people are not willing to accept mistakes and learn from them.

I think it's the concept of 'blame', rather than responsibility, that's at the core of the problem - for reasons others have highlighted.

We do have politicians that move on, retire etc, disappearing from the public sphere, where their contributions are overlooked. We tend to be very focused on the very immediate, rather than the bigger picture / longer view, usually with a government emphasis on the crisis of the day
