News this morning is reporting that in essence a Brexit deal is done apart from the irish border issue which is threatening to scupper the whole deal and plunge Britain into a no deal exit.

My question is how many British people actually care about this issue. Is it something that people would be willing to concede?

I think, outside of English nationalists, people care about peace in Ireland more than most politicians realise. Unfortunately most people in England and Wales neither understand the political issues fully nor the communities backing either side of the device.

I suspect Mr Barnier and Mrs May could shake hands on an agreement right now.

But Mrs May’s problem is how to get that past her Cabinet, her party and parliament.

ie. who the fuck knows. I don't think I've seen a flowchart before that has so little actual direction. Every option pretty much leads to every possible option.

I'm reposting this part of a comment I made on another thread because I think it's relevant here also.

With regard to the border on the island of Ireland.

It turns out that actually there is NO LEGAL REQUIREMENT under WTO terms or rules for any country to secure it's borders. Sounds like good news for the BREXITERS but unfortunately it's still not quite as simple as that.

Interesting article.

Seems to suggest under WTO (non waiver) that it could be argued if one border is porous,ALL have to be (under MFN)

Seems to give some credence to a waiver. But I do wonder how much weight would be given to an argument where one side is choosing to walk away from a position which works. Eg how much of a security risk can it really be if you keep saying you are happy with a no deal ?

This is very true,does anybody understand it?I think Ireland for geographical reasons should be one country very simple,but bloody religion gets involved and in the 21st century this baffles me.

Yes I know there are other problems like the possible break up of the United Kingdom,which is also crazy as I do believe that England,Scotland and Wales should be one nation.

It seems very logicical to me but when have history and facts ever been logical?

It's not really religion at all (historically some of the biggest proponents of Irish Nationalism were Protestant). It's more to do with national identity. Just like I'm happy to see myself as both a British Citizen and an EU citizen whereas you're not; in Ireland some people feel happy being Irish and British whereas others see being Irish and British as two absolutely mutually exclusive things.
