So a new law is coming into force to protect our emergency services against attacks from the public. These attacks have been against NHS staff and fire service - police are regarded as "fair game". But, what does this Say about our society?

It’s says that crimes committed against our emergency services is wrong, and there will be penalties. Does that help?

No one is or should be fair game in doing their job, having said that given the role of the police its pretty much accepted that there are times when they will or may get hurt by those they deal with..

Anyone who attacks a paramedic or ambulance person should be outted and humiliated in public and that goes for those who stick notes on abulances moaning about them being there.

They are suppossed to be nutral

What I can't understand is why someone would be attacked when they are trying to HELP people - possibly save lives. With regards to the police, they are dealing in the main with criminals, and therefore it's part of the job. I feel sad that society is going backwards instead of forwards!

Also before we get excuses of "mental health" - the government needs to sort social/mental care!

However it's not that the laws are weak, just that the legal system fails to enforce them properly.

They get arrested, processed, then go to court and get an ASBO or a few hours community service.

Some even think of an ASBO as a badge of honour FFS.

The scumbags that do this have no fear whatsoever because for them there is nothing to be frightened of.

However it's not that the laws are weak, just that the legal system fails to enforce them properly.

Actually it would be good if they served their FULL term and not released halfway through it. They should do there full sentence and if they are badly behaved get time added on?

It's why Scotland made it a specific crime in 2005 by passing the Emergency Workers (Scotland) Act.

Still doesn't stop the idiots, however.

My housemate who is a Senior A And E nurse has been assaulted many times.

Drink, drugs or a combination are quite often a contributing factor.

PR?

Physical attacks upon NHS and Fire service personnel have and do occur, the former given the size of the workforce being higher..

the information is collated by the Government and would definitely say they are under reported in the latter..

Isn't everyone protected by law against physical attack? Are we not creating a two tier society where emergency workers, are in effect, offered an increased protection than that which is offered to everyone else?

It is a crime to assault anyone without reasonable cause.

Society has given the judiciary power to punish some more severely than others.

That's all.

The maximum sentence for ABH (bruising a person) is 5 years in prison.

GBH (drawing blood) is 16 years.

Wounding with intent with a weapon attempted murder and is life.

What do we need with a 'special law' with lower sentences??? (Other than as a way to normalise violence across the board.)

Not uncommon for planned attacks to take place on Ambulances or staff at a scene, sometimes a false call to get them in and then scrotes will try and access the vehicle looking for drugs etc..

Same with Fire appliances, brick on a rope on the overpass and a call out then the scrotes drop it as the machine is too close to avoid..

setting a small fire then a rush job to steal equipment etc..

being off the run with a smashed screen and returning at normal road speed to do a restow, then hearing a call on the RT to a persons reported fire or an RTC is not clever so any legislation properly enforced may deter the feckin muppets who think emergency personnel are fair game..

The root problem is the sentence for assault isn't harsh enough to start with.

The next problem is if attacks on Emergency Services etc continue to increase because the punishment for doing so isn't harsh enough then that ultimately could lead to people not wanting to join up.

That then has far reaching dire consequences for everyone.
