The prefect storm is brewing - so is it going to be Brazil first? Oops price of coffee going up!

Seriously though right wing nationalist governments are fine - put their country first! But for example who is going to get the best trade deal when two right wing countries negotiate? Or do we just all become self sufficient?

Neither far right nor far left regimes or governments have had a good track record nor ended well..

Division does not work and the sooner we all accept it and learn to compromise the better..

Nobody is going to be self sufficient, which is why I’m certain that nations will have to continue to trade with one another regardless of domestic politics. You only have to look at the damage caused to rogue nations when the rest of the world imposed sanctions. It doesn’t matter how big or how rich a nation might be, if it can’t trade it will die.

I can’t see a nationalist govt in Brazil doing anything to jeopardise their coffee export business. It is way too important to their national economy.

You've only got to look at the damage Trump has done already to the global economy!

Let’s face it the opposition hardly covered themselves in glory. They couldn’t shake the stink of corruption.

The social issues that are currently in Brazil must also have influenced the voters. Let’s hope they don’t go back to the dark days of how they used to deal with Street children and the homeless.

Let's not forget the winning right wing candidate was also stabbed by a left wing activist while he was out on the campaign trail which put him into hospital. It probably galvanised support for him amongst his supporters and won over many floating voters too. Violence and extremism doesn't only exist on the right, the stabbing by a left wing activist was appalling and should be condemned and most likely turned much of the public away from the left wing candidate.

Many changes in government are not necessarily bad - it's all in the details. In this instance, an extremist bigot has been elected to lead the country, so the likelihood is that it won't be all good for millions of people. Sometimes swings between left and right help with balance but extremist positions obviously can ensure that disruption is very severe and cuts deeply into the heart and soul of a nation and potentially affect citizens' lives forever.

Anyone who perceives Brazil's leader as fit and proper is likely to need some introspection, at minimum, to ensure they're within the healthy parameters of psychological trait spectra.

What these results tell me - and I include Trump, Brexit and the rise of fascism in Europe - is that ordinary people are seduced by the prospect of change.

Liberal democracy and capitalism has had three decades or so as the unchallenged global ideology.

It saw off communism and fascism in the 20th century and all the evidence suggests that, globally, it has lifted more and more people out of poverty.

But by the same token it is perceived to have widened inequality (thanks in no small part to the 2008 crash) - and that creates resentment. And that is fertile ground for the demagogues.

Just as it was in the 1930s, when the crash and depression halted globalisation and the politics of economic nationalism took hold.

That ended in war and terrible bloodshed.

If you can get your hands on books about the 1930s, they are well worth a read in the context of what is happening today.

Rather than label people ignorant and mock them. The rise of the Right should be scrutinised and people’s concerns should be addressed before it’s too late down that path.

It’s a real concern from my position in this country.

I don't think that's true at all. I think 1917 and the resulting terror amongst Europe's ruling elite started the process. It was compounded by WW2 and the combination of a labour market desperately short of labour and another "total war", ie all men of fighting age were essentially trained soldiers.

The war compounded solidarity amongst working men and women and it is in the post-war period that the war generation fought for (and won) many of the benefits that Thatcherism has done it's utmost to remove in the past 40 years (and liberal centrism has allowed it to do so).

As is standard the right in this forum and at large have no care for the environment or nature .Best say goodbye to the Amazon rainforest now .Bolsonaro has pledged to curb the powers of Brazil’s environment agency, Ibama, to remove farming restrictions on huge swaths of the Amazon and to pave a highway through the rainforest.

LGBT community should fight to keep the achieved levels of tolerance as of now.

The current trend also represents a threat to the swinger community in general: There will be a time when even right wing swingers will need to pretend not being swinger at all. I guess by then they will miss "the old good times"...

His views on indigenous Amazonia people are telling.

"Minorities have to bend down to the majority,” he said. “The minorities should adapt or simply vanish.”

Now "vanish" is an interesting term that could been seen as ethnic cleansing.

So can we have a show of hands from our right wingers in the forum who feel cleansing the rainforest of trees and resources and ethnic cleansing of indigenous people is what they want and approve of.

Also seeing as you lot are on a swinging site I assume you approve of his views on the LGBT community .??

As you seem overjoyed at his election .

My Portuguese isn't great but the amount of talking about cleansing in his speeches are truly frightening. How are people relishing a monster like this coming to power is baffling but it is consistent with the rise in hatred worldwide.

When will society begin to examine it's relationship with the media, especially social media.

Logically we would imagine greater transparency and does justice bit it's clear as day that it's just stoking the fires of lunacy worldwide.

Humans are very gullible and marketing and campaigning are becoming increasingly scientific and effective.

There has never been a better vector for accelerating the propagation of bad ideas.

A friend told me her 11 year old was asking about the kavanagh hearing....just like the suckers who populate this forum...all pontificating (and crucially becoming emotionally attached to what ever side seduces you first) over what is 99.5% irrelevant to their lives.
