"So it turns out that we can thank Reagan and Thatcher for most if not all todays radical Islamic international terrorism. According to the Saudi Crown Prince it was at the request of allies (guess which 2) in order to counter the growth of Soviet influence in secular Muslim states and put more pressure on the USSR that the Saudis released Wahhabism on the Sunni Muslim world and used its great financial oil wealth to fund radical Islam. The Crown Prince goes on to say at some point in the late 80's early 90's the Saudi state stopped financing the terrorists and funding and control passed to private Saudi foundations which now finance the terrorists and that the Saudi State has to find a way to regain control. Seems to me that the way the Saudi State is taking back control is by becoming more of a terrorist state than it already is. Will our politicians ever learn that our enemies enemy is not our friend even if it seems an easy option to treat them as one? Or does the transient nature political careers mean that we are cursed to live in a world where short-termism will always triumph over our long-term interests?" Oh and there was I thinking us going to war in iraq twice might have had something to do with it | |||

Will provided a pretty good arguement with more facts than opinions but as per everyone ran straight to the snowflake patter and trying to feed the fire it's ridiculous it could've been an actual discussion but instead it fell into the gutter and most people commenting are just saying nasty things with no point behind it why ? Isn't 20/20 hindsight such a wonderful thing. Imagine for a moment if it had gone the other way. The Soviet Union doesn't collapse and consolidates itself in Afghanistan. Emboldened by this it teams up with its Iranian allies to take over Syria and Iraq and then moves on to Israel. (OK I know that most Labour supporters would love to see the Jews pushed into the sea) Eventually the Emirates would be threatened enough to become Soviet satellite states and the Saudi's would eventually have to succumb to the same fate. Then 40 years on someone would come onto an internet forum bleating that Reagan and Thatcher should have done something at the time so we wouldn't have the petrol rationing that we have today. | |||

The truth was and is that the destruction of the USSR's economic base by the US led West had nothing to do with its politics and everything to do with it's unwillingness to allow US corporations to exploit it for profit. The US (and us to a lesser extent) don't give a fuck about human rights or democracy, access to markets is the only thing that counts for anything, we support dictatorships that let us exploit their raw materials and populations. While undermining and overthrowing democratically elected governments that refuse to let us r@pe their countries for our profit. | |||

Do you mean the democratically elected Baath party in Iraq? or maybe the democratic republic of Talibanland (AKA Afghanistan) Oh and I haven't heard any Saudi's screaming r@pe while spending their billions in London. Get off it Will. If it had been a Labour government in the 80's you would be shouting it up as a great achievement. BTW. Just in case you forgot. It was a Labour government that helped to (rightly) invade Afghanistan, and (very wrongly) invade Iraq. | |||
