Looks like Brexit "could" be a big winner for Macron if WE get our Brexit dream .

"

President Macron has stepped up attempts to attract UK-based carmakers to France with a private dinner at the Elysée Palace, following their growing concerns about a botched Brexit deal.

The heads of Renault Nissan, Vauxhall and Jaguar Land Rover are understood to have been among executives invited to a dinner last week, where the president warned against growing nationalism around the world and said he was making France more business friendly. It is the latest sign Macron is trying to attract firms nervous about the uncertainty created by Brexit. Three French ministers also took part in the dinner, with the organisers ensuring that companies with major UK operations were represented.

Old news to a certain extent.

I recall various stories about Frankfurt and Paris trying to persuade London financiers to relocate.

I'm sure it's not just car manufacturers who will be getting wooed by states operating in the single market.

On the 1st of September new EU rules on car emissions took effect. This basically has created a huge back log of newly manufactured cara awaiting to be registrated as September is the month the new plates are issued.

The backlog is caused due to the fact that there's not enough test centres to deal with the manufacturing output.

This is why certain car manufactures are going to 4 day weeks. They sold 20% less cars in September because of the backlog. Take it from someone who works in the industry, manufacturing has slowed down due to over saturation due to a backlog caused by the EU newest rules on emissions, Not because of Brexit.

thx for the insider information. I assumed it was because there was a run in August to get good deals.

Britain as well as British India and Canada were all involved in the Battle of France. You know, what turned into the Battle of Dunkirk. So we were helping the frogs since at least 1940.

I can understand why you would say that. I wish I could go back in time and explain to old Winston why we should have kept our troops out of France and concentrated on defending ourselves and our real allies.

"I’d say rest of the world is a big door "

But it's not a choice between the EU and the rest of the world. We already trade with the whole world on WTO terms. Those terms include preferential trading with the EU/EEA/EFTA and 60 other countries outside that grouping. What our choice is is trading on preferential terms with EU/EEA/EFTA + 60 and standard WTO terms with the rest of the world or trade on standard WTO terms with the whole world.

There is no economic argument for BREXIT and those that have looked into it know this, including many leavers. The only valid argument for BREXIT is the sovereignty argument and that the cost is worth it. But that's not the argument BREXITers often make because that know that most people won't accept it. So they simply lie about it.

I think that is extremely unlikely but what is likely, thanks to BREXIT, is a Franco Germany hegemony in Europe from Norway in the north to Malta in the south and Ireland in the west and Ukrainian in the east leaving the UK completely surrounded and with absolutely no say other the rules and trading arrangements of what will continue to be our biggest export market. It was to avoid such a scenario that we went to war against France in the 18th & 19th century and again, twice, in the 20th century. BREXITers have just surrendered our say in our own future. There are no long term friends or gratitude in international relations, just long term interests. Britain's long term interests our, as they have been for over 1000 years, mostly in Europe. What ever happens there will always effect us. The only question is how much influence and say we have over what happens there.

Why do the French specifically owe "us" and NOT say the Russians, or the Canadians, or the Americans, or the Kiwi's, the Aussies, the Indians, the S Africans and the free Europeans? Why specifically us?

The history books that I read said that the British and French were given a thorough beating in 1940 and that led to the British forces conducting a humiliating retreat across the Channel from Dunkirk. The Royal Air Force then held the Luftwaffe at bay thanks to some heroic efforts by Polish, Canadian, free European and of course the RAF itself.

The freeing of France from the jackboot as you call it was an effort conducted by the Russians in the East, the British and Americans from the South and an truly multinational invasion force from the North.

I guess that it must be nice to think that Ingerlaand won the war, but we didn't. It was a huge Allied Force that eventually defeated the Nazi's.

Had the russians not been supplied by the convoys taking vital supplies to them they may well have been over run by the germans, it is a very underated contribution to the war effort, as indeed were the north atlantic convoys, thousands lost their lives at sea. Every single man and woman who played apart in defeating hitlerand the japanese deserve our respect and gratitude and it really makes me cross when people call this country a shit hole etc, without those who sacrificed their lives and in many cases their youth we wouldnt be allowed to say such things, perhaps those that bad mouth the Uk should try living in other countries and say such things about them, they would soon find out how liberal the UK is

Why dont you read the post that I was originally replying to instead of jumping the gun and assuming.

A well known Brexiter suggested that France owed "us" specifically for freeing them from the jackboot. I simply asked why do they not owe Americans, Canadians, South Africans, Anzacs, Indians, Russians and the rest? It is simply inaccurate to state the Europe owes the UK alone and it is also a fact that without Allied interventions there would never have been invsions through Italy or via Dunkirk because the British Army was not big enough or well equipped enough to take on the Nazi's alone.

Britain and France were both prepared to give up their sovereignty in 1940 in times of war and desperate times.

The final "Declaration of union" approved by the British War Cabinet stated that[1]

France and Great Britain shall no longer be two nations, but one Franco-British Union. The constitution of the Union will provide for joint organs of defence, foreign, financial and economic policies. Every citizen of France will enjoy immediately citizenship of Great Britain, every British subject will become a citizen of France.

I bet the brexiters hate this created by Churchill and de Gaulle ..

It's some what ironic that those who shout the loudest about our war dead are the every same people who are actively undermining their legacy now. When those who actually fought and lived through in WW1 and WW2 were given a vote on EU/EEC membership in 1975 they voted by 67% to 33% in favour. I know my own Grandfather, who was nearly killed in WW1, wept on New Year's Eve in 72/73 as we celebrated joining the EEC and when I asked him why he said it was because, thanks to joining Europe, no more young men would be going of to die in wars in Europe, like many of his friends had had to do. It's all very well claiming WE made a massive sacrifice when none of US actually made any sacrifice at all, while at the same time actually overturning the very thing, peace and unity in Europe, that many of those that did actually fight, sacrifice and die overwhelmingly supported. Rather than insisting that France or Belgium or Italy or the whole of Europe remember the sacrifice they made for them maybe those intent on overturning what they thought their sacrifice had achieved remember the sacrifice they made for THEM and respect the legacy they voted to leave us in 1975.

It totally disgusts me and definitely disrespects what my Grandparents fought for and what many of their friends died for. There is more to being a patriot than just waving a plastic flag and knocking Johnny Foreigner. These people didn't fight and die to see Europe descend once again into petty nationalistic rivalry.

I guess that it must be nice to think that Ingerlaand won the war, but we didn't. It was a huge Allied Force that eventually defeated the Nazi's. there was lots of humiliating retreats on all sides by all it was after all a 6 yr war other wise would of been over a lot faster the Russians were saved by there winter some of the allies were only in the war for two yrs but it pleases some ppl to under play the brave young British men who gave up there lives to liberate Europe

One of the things that undermines the sacrifice made is the rise of the far right spouting the same vile language of the fascists that many of all nations fought and died to oppose in those times..

"...the French still owe us big style for freeing them from the jackboot.they've got short memories that lot

The Russians were saved by the fact that the Japanese did not attack them as expected, freeing up a huge number of soldiers as reinforcements at the battle of Stalingrad.

Without those reinforcements the Russians would have lost that battle, and the outcome of WW2 might well have been different...

Hold on, what happened on the Eastern Front was lucky, many people have no idea how much. The weather plus the unexpected reinforcements won what was probably the most important battle of WW2. No single nation was capable of beating Hitler’s Germany, it took a large number of nation states working together. I personally don’t like to give too much credit to the Yanks. They bled us dry for months lend leasing us WW1 ships that were duly sunk by German Uboats. Then joined in when the rest of us were almost beat. Nice....

Many UK humans think themselves unique and clever

Oddly so to our for fathers the French lol yet they remain and are in a prime position to pick up the pieces

The Eu has a deal with a lot of countries and one condition of such deals is they get a better deal than small fry like the UK for example

But I'm sure the UK can do a deal with India that makes t shirts and cars cheaper xxx

Wow...

History re-written,

As I recall the Japanese Russian war lasted all of three weeks - in 1945 and about as distant and irrelevant to Stalingrad as irrelevant could be.

Generals January and Febuary defeated an arrogant Third Reich. Nothing to do with Japan.

This type of fishing for business goes on all the time but must have been especially active since the vote. The UK will lose some opportunities and some people will be very negatively impacted, I'm sure.

It's probably better if such activities are overt Imo.

It's been an ongoing directive for the EU to reduce car emissions, they've continued to create and reseach more reliable and efficient methods of testing.

These tests as there's 2, were first used last year in September just for that month. September this year it's now mandatory for all new cars manufactured.

September 2019 these tests will be carried out independently so we expect to see a similar situation next year.

They owe us, history is where alliances are made, and even after hundreds of years where we were at war with the frogs, we still helped them out of the shit in two world wars. Both times against their new best friends the crauts.

I think that post BREXIT we will need to take another look at continental Europe, and decide which of the countries are friends and which are foes.

On the foe list immediately go France and Germany. Fuck em both to hell.

Over 100k cars are made monthly in the UK. The indursty has failed to address the issue as they can use the drop in manufacturing and Brext to put pressure on the government for more attractive terms i.e. tax breaks and the like. This isn't a conspiracy this is just business. I wouldn't be suprised if Nissan and Landrover were given a much better offer than they've previously had.

Next year they will need an independent overseer. It's always going to cause a disruption when new regulations are implemented and car manufacturing output will drop due to this.

Overall less cars will be made until the industry gets to grips with the new regulations.

Car production in the UK fell by 3% this year from last. It rises and falls on a monthly basis. Most of the cars made here are exported to Europe.

China accounts for 6% of the total cars exported.

The SMMT blamed preparation for new emissions tests and new car models for what it said was a "one-month anomaly".

Longer term, UK car production was as expected, the industry body said.
