MEP's Expenses

In politics, transparency is used as a means of holding public officials accountable and fighting corruption.

In 2015 a group of journalists asked the European Parliament for access to MEP travel expenses, daily subsistence allowances and staff arrangement expenses.

A simple exercise - in fact you would think they would be published already. However, those requests were all refused by the Parliament, as were the confirmatory applications which followed them.

The group of journalists brought an action before the General Court of the European Union seeking the annulment of the Parliament’s decisions.

Yesterday the General Court dismissed the actions and upheld the Parliaments’ decisions - refusing access to the documents requested.

The European Parliament, where democracy is not transparent and the public is left in the dark!

Hallelujah to that, sooner we're out the better. No transparency it does make you wonder what the EU have to hide?

I did read somewhere just a couple of weeks ago that Junker was doing £10000 a week in expenses.

Just as opaque as our own political classes. It was a huge leak of data that shed light on their corruption.

two wrongs don't make a right can you not just agree your precious eu have something to hide and instead of saying we did it years ago agree it should be transparent?

While it took a scandal to get our MPs to where they are now, I agree we need transparency here.

I’d hope there will be some MEPs who have the courage to post their own expenses to show they are kosher.....

MEPs can claim 4146 euros per month "general expenditure" expenses.

MEPs can also claim 313 euros per day "daily allowance" expenses.

MEPs also travel first class and can claim all of that back.

The only thing they need receipts or documentation for is for the travel expenses.

Most, but not all, claim their full allowance but many have declined to give details of office addresses etc.

How many pieces of pond furniture have they bought ?

I wonder where they are on the scale of claiming what’s right, making sure they claim all they can (but for valid reasons) and outright lying ?

Thinking about this from my work perspective I know of (former) colleagues who buy the wine they want for dinner, but the most expensive bottle of wine because they can, and some who fiddle.

Without transparency we hope for the first, suspect the second, but fear the third.

Conservative MEPs have submitted their expense returns for independent scrutiny for the last nine years.

Preaching? What's up, were the contents of the sermon a bit uncomfortable to swallow?

And therein lies the nub.

This is about MEP expenses.

You know, the European Parliament.

Our MEPs and theirs.

Yet you think it is the EU.

I fully accept that politicians are eminently corruptible, whichever parliament they happen to sit in.

It is not exclusive to our MPs.

unless the sermon you are preaching was "a plague on all our houses" and you missed out a few bits ... then this is one of those where i wouldn't point the finger in just one direction

Any chance of repeating that in plain English please?

nope... two wrongs don't make a right...

if you are going to point fingers in one direction then point it in all directions.....

espeially if people are going to be saying things will be better in "6 months times" because that is not acknowledging that we have had the same issues in our own parliament... and in the case such as Ian Paisley Jr, still have that issue!!!

However, MPs expenses are published in the UK parliament....they are not in the EU Parliament, and what's mkre the EU Court has upheld the secrevy and lack of transparency.

But you clearly don't think the EU are in the wrong....otherwise you would have commented on it instead of deflection and whataboutery.

The thread is about MEPs' expenses, but you would prefer to change the subject to MPs' expenses.

Why should I point a finger at anyone else?

This is a story about the refusal of the European parliament to publish information about MEPs expenses. It hasn't suggested any scandal or wrongdoing by MEPs.

Seeing as you have just claimed there are similar issues in Brussels to the MPs expenses scandal at Westminster, maybe you could provide some evidence to back this up.

Or, as suggested by other posters on this thread, was pointing the finger at Westminster just a deflection?
