Yeah, how would that work?

Can't they just say they aren't happy with the results of the last general election and call for a vote for another one?

The last general strike in living memory did no good for this country. While lots of people have some sympathy for "the workers", that only goes so far as not having to endure even slight inconveniences. A general strike would turn millions of people's lives into misery and them against the whole labour movement.

Most people learn as children, that throwing tantrums isn't a good way to get what you want. I guess those that don't learn, grow up to join the Labour party. I blame the parents personally.

I see the leaders are distancing themselves from the speech. But there's no hiding from the response she got from the conference.

It made feel like I'd gone back in time to when I'd just left school.

Am totally opposed to momentum but some of the core policies that Labour have do appeal, renationalising the rail and the core utilities are a no brainer and yes they will cost.

But the fact that governments on the continent are making and using the profits from our water, electricity supplies etc in benefit of their own economies and that whatever our differences politics wise that people are ok with it is beyond me..

Fair play, its not a policy they have or if they ever went that far would get support so am in agreement that it's a none starter..

It will be the headlines and the family policies amongst others will be ignored by the usual media..

Because in the past, its led to many of the benefits we now have in the workplace- and is still effective in many other countries. unfortunately here, we're complacent and rather passive now. The Tories knoew the power of the unions and a large workforce, which is one of the reasons they pretty much decimated our large scale manufacturing industries and privatised infrastructure.

They only want to hear form you at election time, then its get back in your box and keep quiet until next time like a good little drone

And yet ironically it was a Labour pm who made a "magic momey tree" after the 2nd world war, created 2 things used today which ultimately dropped the national debt by half in 4 years...

Some of corbyns ideas from the last election do hold up against scrutiny...now i wouldnt say he was a long term solution but short term, quite possibly.

Or sit there and go the pot is empty but find 10 billion to put the DUP in parliament which due to certain ties is (technically) a breach of the northern ireland peace treaty... But let's just sweep that under the table too.

The one thing the Labour party is really bad at is learning from history. The last general strike led to Margaret Thatcher and the destruction of old labour and the Trade Union movement as a whole.

As Labour are keen to keep pointing out apparently big business is getting ready to jump ship when we get a no deal so what do they think will happen if the country has a general strike and they try to raise taxes to the levels they are talking about.

You can't have it both ways

An attempt to overthrow the government by any means other than by a vote is treason, and as a minimum I feel those who call for, or publicly support such a thing should be disbarred from public office.... if this was the case, you'd see a lot less of this crap spouted.

Well now let’s try to get an overview shall we? What Laura Smith said was imo a publicity stunt and was appealing to a minority of frustrated left wingers who think their time has come. For all those of a Tory persuasion let’s not forget some of the crass promises that people like Nigel Farage and UKIP have spouted in the past before we get on our high horses. The last real general strike was back in 1926 and was probably the peak of socialist power - the strikes in the 1970s were sponsored by Russian money being given to the miners to enable them to risk an extended strike. It’s not going to happen because there is no money in the strikers pot and nobody wants to go back to burning the floorboards from derelict houses while standing around a brazier freezing your arse off. We like our modern joined up internet driven life but we are getting fucked over royally by the international fat cats and their city cronies. The skewing of galloping property values as an investment instead of investing in useful utilities like the Germans and French and Spanish have done means there is bugger all in the pension pot so we will all need to flee to somewhere cheap when the crash happens. This country has too many bureaucrats and middle managers driving around in big German cars while doing fuck all real work - all aboard the gravy train....

Those that fail to learn from history just repeat the same mistakes...

How do striking workers, often the low paid benefit from losing their income to prop up power hungry political classes of both main parties.

Are Labour going to pay those who strike for their lost income, or feed their families? If so where will they get the funds from.

Great idea conceived by an economic genius?

There seem to be 2 threads running on this. It doesn't appear to be a Labour pledge or anything like that - just that this MP, who represents her area, has put forward her views. There are MPs on all sides who have views that don't represent their party and often defy common-sense and good reason.

They can afford to be shit because sensible people are too shit scared not to vote for them, which is why Labour and conservative votes went up at the last election, despite both leaders being objectively shite candidates. If you actually care about what's good for the country, rather than the tribe, they are a fucking disaster because they bring out the worst of the government, who weren't great to start with.

"Labour MP Laura Smith at the labour party conference calls for a general strike to over throw the government,..

Good idea ?

Did she actually raise it at the party conference ?

No, it was at a left wing fringe meeting.

It's not official Labour policy.

No, not policy, but supported by at least one of the shadow cabinet.

Who? Laura Smith isn't in the shadow cabinet"

"The call prompted a standing ovation from the cheering audience - including shadow justice secretary Richard Burgon, who was also on stage. "

The age of austerity has been good for the poor its hardened them and prepared them for the age of corbyn .

So you're predicting a labour win next time .It seems a good bet at the moment .Things can change .Maybe a video of corbyn pledging allegiance to Osama bin laden will turn up and save the rich from the purge ..

They haven't, but as shit as they are I would still vote for them over that magic money tree lunatic any time.

You think this lot have more of an idea on financing? they promise the same pot of money to every project and hope nobody notices when it doesn't appear- or spout some shite excuse.

In the 11 years of Conservative government and austerity measures, i've never once heard them say who we owe the money to, why and when it will be paid off- its the biggest scam ever seen in this countries history

Or sit there and go the pot is empty but find 10 billion to put the DUP in parliament which due to certain ties is (technically) a breach of the northern ireland peace treaty... But let's just sweep that under the table too."

No, let's not. But it still doesn't explain where Labour is going to get its money from. And kidding yourself and others that it can be got from only the top 5% really doesn't stand much scrutiny.

The last 8 years has seen the spending power of nearly everyone who earns less that £250,000 pa drop by some 10 to 20% however the wealth of the top 1% has doubled. A person earning minimum wage pays around 20% in income taxes (income tax and NI combined) but Jeff Bezos Amazon (a notorious minimum wage zero hours temp contract employer) paid just £4.6 million on its £80 million declared profits, which is just 6%. Fact is flood out economics is the biggest con ever and the only way to bring it to an end is to force those who own the businesses and politicians to understand that either they share or they are going to be closed down and forced out of business. Of course I have no illusions as to how difficult it will be to force the mega rich to share, they did not become mega rich by being altruistic. I have to admit I am continually shocked and disheartened at the number of sheeple who not only vote against their own self-interest but actively fight against and disrupt those who attempt to improve their lives.

A general strike? Yeah that ought to solve all our problems, not!

Labour’s plan would see a spike in unemployment, just like we got in the late 70’s early 80’s. I’ll never forget all those steelworkers who lost their jobs after so many plants were shut for good. That might have been inevitable in the future (at the time), but all the strikes did was accelerate the process, leading to thousands of job losses. What about the coal miners? Yeah they had a whale of a time, got crushed by Thatcher and then saw many of the mines closed.

With all things the way they are, we can’t afford a general strike. It would be like taking what little money we have left, and setting fire to it.

I’m glad I’m not in a union, at least I’ll still have a job after the public sector have all gone and fucked themselves...

Less than you think...

To illustrate my point Mark Zuckerberg owns about 28+% of facebook (his wife owns slightly less), facebook is valued at over 630 billion but Zuckerberg is only worth 81 billion. I find myself asking where has the other 129 billion gone? But, hey, what do I know Zuckerberg has said he will give away 99% of his wealth over his lifetime so the numbers must be wrong...

You seriously can't see the flaw in that analysis? To answer the question, 99% pledged in all cases. So you're talking nonse when you say that the rich don't share. They just prefer to give money to worthwhile causes than fund government waste.

Ah right, so his worth as claimed by him (which is what he has said he will give away) and the worth of his share of facebook are not related.

Glad you cleared that up for me.

No doubt at some point when he poking around down the back of one of his sofas he will stumble upon the missing 130 billion and give that away too,

The more the Conservative Party and their extremist cousins in UKIP, Britain First and the EDL drag the country to the right, then the more those on the militant wing of the left and its cohorts will veer even further to the left.

This is a daft idea, the stuff of student politics.

Wait until the extremists on the right get their way and begin ripping up workplace protections. That will be the time to mobilise the masses.

"Look if you don't understand the concept of shares and how they are valued, best to say less and people might assume you know more. "

OK...

So if I understand you correctly if I own $230 billion worth of shares in a publicly traded company I don't have a net worth of $230 billion + whatever my other assets are worth I only have the worth of my other assets that I have bought with the dividends paid on those shares and directors emoluments I have collected from my position on the board due to holding those shares...

Sorry I see my mistake now, I was subtracting his claimed worth from the value of his shareholding in faceache, my fault, sorry.

Change first and second posts...

I wonder what has happened $230 billion that Zuckerberg seems to have mislaid?

"The one thing the Labour party is really bad at is learning from history.

And neither can the Tories. They can't tell us to ignore the economic experts when they tell us BREXIT is going to a disaster but believe them well telling us that Labour's plans will lead to economic disaster. Especially as there is more agreement amongst economists on the folly of BREXIT than there is on the likely consequences of Labour's plans.

Personally I agree with the economic experts on both.

I think "economic expert" is an oxymoron

That seems to be the opinion of the sheeple supporting the populist policies of both are main parties at the moment. Taxes and charity are given away in cash, not share book value. The value you assign to 28% of Facebook could never be achieved in cash since you arrived at that value by multiplying the number of shares by the current market price. If anyone tried to liquidate 28% of Facebook then the price would drop enoromously so you would never achieve anything remotely close to the value you assign. So essentially you are confusing paper share values, with cash, the foundational mistake of every great financial crash.

I wouldn't even try to understand the maths or the reasoning behind what looks like a very complex formula for predicting the current value of a futures option. I'm not an economist. However how expert do you need to be to realise that, all else being equal, if you make it harder to trade you're probably going to be worse of, or if you tax profits more the overall value of a company is going to be less? If the economists were saying something that seemed counter intuitive then I'd question it more, but they aren't.

It ain't complex, it ain't clever and it doesn't work. Real economics is frequently counter initiative. Whilst i am very much in favour of free trade, what you trade matters deeply. Modern economics doesn't really have the in-built ability to factor such basic complications because it doesn't have a basis to understand value beyond "What someone is willing to pay". There is a sub-set of economics called behavioural economics that does, but the fact that it's a minor sub-set should be a big red flag.

Ah right, so if I own 28% of a company worth $230 billion and choose to liquidate my assets I have no choice but to dump the shares on the market suppressing the value, because obviously I have got to a point where I control that much wealth by being stupid and am clearly unable to shed my holding without making my actions public.

And to be clear the fact that it is impossible to do things like that is why there are laws across the world that require individuals and organisations to make public their holding over a certain % in any publicly traded company as they acquire them.

Now you were/are claiming that Zuckerberg's holdings in facebook are not worth their quoted price. Would you like to explain to me how others share portfolio is considered as part of their net worth but Zuckerberg is somehow 'special' because you say he is.

Funny that, whenever I come across someone who is clearly misinformed through lack of understanding in a subject I know inside out I can always find the time (and small enough words, ideas and points of reference if needed) to educate and inform them. I have to say I have also noticed that those driven by dogma but lacking real understanding of a subject use big words and ideas to blind with supposed expertise and then when faced with logic fall back to the 'I cant be bothered because you're to stupid for me to explain it to' tactic to get out of a discussion they clearly wish they had never entered.

No worries. I had a scratch the head moment, but your quick second (sorry third) post made things clear...

I wish I had seen the deleted post, it may have been of the 'spill my beer' variety that I so love.

Nope. It’s based on crap assumptions.

And I don’t value the (fake) nobel prize in economics too.
