Isaac Newton came up with the theory of Gravity before the EU came about, Darwin came up with the theory of Evolution before the EU came about, the list of Great British scientists who never had anything to do with the EU is huge. Great British scientific achievements have nothing to do with the EU.

You right until you get to your final two sentences.

The list of pre-EU British scientists is huge. True, but there is a greater number with a greater range of influence post-EU than pre-EU. In science making a name for yourself is not the objective. Uncovering and applying objective truth is. Spreading the application of said truth is a secondary objective.

And thanks to the EU's open knowledge sharing platform, funding to stimulate scientific research and development, and variety of schemes to encourage pan European networking and collaboration that influence goes global further. Given that few countries in the world can match European nations intrigue and desire to perdue science and it's public implimentation.

Given that hard Brexit is set out of minimal standardisation with the EU and minimal engagement with their Department s this also involves science.

The US, Canada, Japan, S.Korea and India already heavily engage with the EU regarding research contract bidding. The EU member states astronomically get the lion's share of research contracts because of the collective cooperation possible within the EU.

I might be wrong, but I doubt that the UK independently will outbid the EU

In all my time as a student and a researcher I hardly find any joint UK/US papers or EU/US papers.

There's a reason. The American state allows legal action against researchers by corporates to get data hidden, edited or removed from academic journals.

People do not want to research with teams who could be censored.

Better but that's because in meritocratic societies technology develops exponentially.

That said I think the EU 28 as a whole have excellerated the rate.

To the original question.

Yes. I think our scientific achievements and how we have put science forward as one of our priorities as a culture makes us one of the most egalitarian nations out there.

I'm not British but growing up I was interested in science and physics and now as an engineer I admire the work and achievements of British scientist's. But as an engineer I admire most Brunel, Wren and Stephenson to mention a few. So I think you guys have a lot to be proud of in this regard.

Absolutely right - but when we're these great Britain's - a long time ago? But some will quote Dyson - who is a great engineer/inventor. A true modern Britain who closed his production in the UK to manufacture cheaper in distant "sweat shops". Just think of the wealth, jobs and tax that the UK has lost!!

Unfortunately investment in R&D is pathetic by this goverment .It will only get worse under the brexit buffons who look at the world with colonial nostalgia and a ridiculous view that we will become the worlds factory floor once again.

There is only one way to be top of the global pecking order of nations and that is to be at the cutting edge of technology. If brexit undermines innovation in this country it will be the final nail in this nation as a global player. It does seem inevitable from the comments in the thread and the quality of MPs in goverment that without getting to technical we appear to be fucked.

Do you think they came up with all of this in complete isolation?

They didn't correspond continually with European colleagues? They didn't publish in Latin so that all information could be freely shared?

"Great British" "discoveries" are nothing of the sort. All discoveries are collaborations.

"What Des-Cartes [sic] did was a good step. You have added much several ways, & especially in taking the colours of thin plates into philosophical consideration. If I have seen further it is by standing on the sholders [sic] of Giants."

Sir Isaac Newton said that.

You understand not one thing about science, technology or engineering research and development.

That's nor an opinion.

That's just a phrase. What do "we" lead in? How much collaboration is involved? Where do the individuals in "British" research teams come from? Are the results shared openly as part of the (EU) funding conditions or exploited for corporate gain?

Have a look at the Human Genome Project and how different the outcomes would have been if we were working with our American cousins.

Yeah, American corporates would probably get the American government to ransom that information for private use only.

This is true. For example Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection would have been shelved if Darwin had not found Mendel's writings on pea flower veriability and hereditary

Science has really only come into the 'team solves entire problem or question' phase in the last decade. And it's largely because of an increased development and sharing of tools and older reliable data.

Our scientific history has helped the whole world develope it’s way out of the Middle Ages. The industrial revolution put more money into the hands of the wealthy, made more of our people into slaves, and even more end up in the poor house.

I’m not denying their effect. Just their relevance as evidence brexit will be positive for current academics. The world has changed and academia is no longer a preserve of the individual and the upper classes. It’s a collaborative ecosystem spanning class, culture and country.

They are not "British" discoveries. That is rank arrogance. They have always been collaborations. Far more so now than ever. The "British" teams and companies are also nothing of the sort. They are international. The benefit of such diversity is impossible to overemphasise. Ease of movement throughout Europe means that British companies and universities have benefited from international staffing. Why would you want to work with the best people from one country when could work with the best of 27?

A large, large proportion of these people are, liberal, elite, experts. We don't want them anymore. Right?

The EU didn't, but The Royal Society did - of which both Newton and Darwin were fellows.

For what it's worth, this us what the presidents of the society had to say:

"Sir,

Both the UK and the EU sides in the Brexit negotiations have recognised the importance of a deal for science that allows the closest continued cooperation and mobility.  It is clearly seen as a win-win for all, as it is crucial to everyone’s long-term health, wealth, and quality of life.  Europe was the home of the Enlightenment and the birth of modern science.  The recent decades of close cooperation reversed an earlier period of decline in comparison with the USA and have made Europe a global scientific powerhouse again.

But there is a real fear that one side or the other might try to use this common good as a bargaining chip in negotiations.  At Chequers this week, our politicians must not let ideology come before the long- term interests of the people.  Trashing relationships with the EU and with EU member states will jeopardise global scientific progress, damaging innovation and the economy, the NHS and the Nation’s health, and the overall future of the UK.

Venki Ramakrishnan, President of the Royal Society; Paul Nurse, President of the Royal Society (2010-2015); Martin Rees, President of the Royal Society (2005-2010)."

Take from that what you will (though bear in mind that modern science actually had its origins in the Middle East and was born out of the Islamic Golden Age, so...)

Great British scientific achievements have nothing to do with the EU.

D'oh!

Research costs money.

Money comes from the EU.

Will the UK replace the money coming from the EU?

Newton and Darwin never had any EU funding. The EU didn't exist when they were alive. The same can be said for many other Great British scientists and engineers.

No good. They are experts in their field so are not to be trusted. One of them even sounds a bit foreign so must be part of some external conspiracy.

We are the best, have always been the best and don't need anyone else ever except perhaps America because they (and especially that hunky Trump) are so hot.

#projectfear #remoaner #Twoworldwarsandoneworldcup

This is the entirety of the response you will get from almost every Leaver in this forum. I would be delighted to be proven wrong. Perhaps to even acknowledge that there might be some downside in even this single topic. lmaooo calm Down man give yourself a heart attach chilllll lolbest rant iv heard for a while tho lol "

That was hardly a rant. It was a prediction based on experience

I didn't say that the other option would be that there would be no response at all...

"You lot do know most science is actually privately funded? "

True. However, the blue-sky research that the EU funds on fundamental science and even engineering must be shared publicly.

That's good for everyone.

"Do you care about Britain's scientific achievements? Is it a source of pride that Britain is a world leader in science?

I'm not British but growing up I was interested in science and physics and now as an engineer I admire the work and achievements of British scientist's. But as an engineer I admire most Brunel, Wren and Stephenson to mention a few. So I think you guys have a lot to be proud of in this regard.

Absolutely right - but when we're these great Britain's - a long time ago? But some will quote Dyson - who is a great engineer/inventor. A true modern Britain who closed his production in the UK to manufacture cheaper in distant "sweat shops". Just think of the wealth, jobs and tax that the UK has lost!!"

I think this post highlights that you really haven't got a clue what is actually happening on the ground here in the UK, and you've got your head up in the clouds over there in France. Dyson is investing and ploughing fortunes into new technologies in the uk, such as his £200 million Gloucestershire test track for electric cars.

Are his vacuum cleaners manufactured in this country? Yes or no?

Excellent R&D investment.

Highly paid and skilled jobs. Very high proportion of foreign staff as UK does not provide enough.

Jobs for the elite in your eyes.

I would be very surprised if there was anything more than prototype build in the UK

The post you quoted was that his manufacturing had been moved out of the UK. You said that post shows the poster doesn't have a clue what's going on. So is manufacturing in the UK or not?

You could have said, "yes manufacturing has left, but he's building a test track" but you said the poster didn't have a clue in response to their post about manufacturing.

No. The poster I quoted made a more wider general point than just manufacturing alone and talked about 'wealth, tax and jobs'. Those things go beyond manufacturing alone, Dyson is creating wealth, creating jobs and paying tax in the UK through the new £200 million Test track development for electric cars in Gloucestershire. Jobs were created and tax was spent in the uk in the construction industry building the facility. Then ongoing jobs will be created, wealth will increase and tax will continue to be paid in the uk as the test track is used presently and into the future.

Who's said that there would never be any engineering or science investment in the UK?

It just becomes harder to have the collaborations and easily bring in the expertise to get the best results.

The construction jobs are, of course, welcome but temporary.

The longer-term jobs on site are not going to create mass employment for your Leave supporters. They create specialist jobs many of which will be filled by immigrants who have the skills which we, as a nation, do not seem to want to do any more than picking fruit.

It's all very well to bask in some great scientific past (which was not created in isolation anyway) but a tiny proportion of the population actually works in those areas now. The position we have is also based very heavily on the fact that European specialists can easily move here and international ones can benefit from that interaction as well as move relatively freely to other parts of the EU which are equally advanced.
