I was watching tannbach, its a 3 part ww2 serie set after the war up to the 60s, it is very good, have you seen it?

They were forcing people to leave their homes and strip their rights of the things they owned and to force them to sign over their houses and business, they did it to their own people with a mini ddr in each town, whats your view of how it conitinued even decades after the war?

I don't know about the series, but your post reminds me why I think the Human Rights Act is so important.

Totalitarian and authoritarian states - be they of left or right - always seek seek to transfer the rights of individuals to the custody of the state.

The European Convention of Human Rights was the direct response to the atrocities that occur when the rights of all belong in the hands of a few.

It enshrines the rights of the individuals and curbs the power of the state.

In that sense, it is inherently a Conservative philosophy and indeed was drawn up by a Conservative lawyer.

It saddens me when I read people talk so willingly of handing their rights back to the state.

Good in theory as long as the governments follow it,basically it is just another ideal that means nothing.

Why does Corbyn not want to be in the EU because of this so he can set up a totalitarian state.

If Hitler came to power and this existed do you think he would take any notice. If Trump was a European leader would he go along with it.Basically like most idealistic ideas it is ultimately bullshit

Means nothing?

Your rights are enshrined in the HRA. The UK is signed up to the ECHR. Membership of the EU is conditional on adherence to the ECHR, which is why Turkey will never join and why Poland is on the verge of being suspended.

It is the tool to keep the fascists at bay.

Is there a country in Europe leaning so far to to the right it would appoint a Trump to lead it?

I think the USA is head and shoulders above anyone else at the

Of course the Trumps of this world hate it - it constrains their power to trample over individuals.

Human rights are universal.

Is that not the point?

Doesn't the law exist to treat everyone equally without bias?

That means that even a criminal has the same rights other than those specifically suspended for a conviction.

Even immigrants should be treated as humans, just like us.

Central

People are viewed by many as just being various classes of cannon fodder - they are state assets, to be used for the benefit of the state. Rights and freedoms conflict with this perspective and should be retained at almost any cost. As others say, extremists of perhaps any persuasion would happily see their people more ensnared and under their power. Loss of freedom of movement that UK citizens face in the EU is a major loss of opportunity that people should be concerned about, as their ability to live and work is considerably reduced - but the greater risk is from a leader who would like to reduce, rather than increase their rights and freedoms.

Only if the UK exits the European Convention of Human Rights.
