As their best workers are considering leaving. I saw an interesting program about it, where a farmer put up an ad. 10 polish people applied and 0 brits, the brits was more intrested in playing playstation rather than helping their local farm, what will happen to the fields, will they be left to rot? Importing will be expensive.

Funny enough was listening to a thing last night where a farmer from Devon was explaining what the consequences of life after brexit would be to farmers....

I think the most scary thing is that the economist the brexiteer love to quote on everything, Patrick minford, said to a commons select committee “that like coal and steel production the farming community would become obsolete”

Once them pesky horrible migrant workers get shipped back to their own Countries on HMS FARAGE etc the indigenous population that up until then had been wanting the work but told by the Farmers to fuck off will then take over the jobs willingly.

It must be true, an arch Leaver has said so often on here for it to be any other

Polish people are not "helping their local farms" in Poland. They do it in order to get payed. Perhaps if farmer Barleymow paid a decent rate he might get more "help", from the "locals". Lack of a glut of unemployed people tends to push wages up.

Whilst there may be some rural poverty, the infrastructure in this country - public transport and affordable housing in rural areas - isn't especially great, so that unemployed people can get to near minimum wage jobs. Whilst unemployment is still around, the actual numbers claiming is fairly small and the most won't have experience in working the land, nor be in a place where they can take public transport to a farm with a job, for a few weeks at harvest time. If they were able to, it's also likely that UK taxpayers would have to subsidise their low income levels with tax credits.

It's really worth looking at the distributions of income levels, unemployment and costs of living throughout the UK and then reflecting on the matches to surge/ongoing farming employment needs.

Actually to be fair to farmers the NFU did say that voting to remain would be better for their members, it’s the fishermen who wanted to leave....

Catch 22 - we want everything for nothing - ok as cheap as we can. Higher wages means higher prices! The supermarkets demand low prices so they can add their profit margin and sell to us cheaper food. A bit of cake and eat it. Farmers ain't making a massive profit.

Actually it has! The pound has fallen in value and therefore it's not as attractive to work here anymore.

The perception of foreign workers - especially eastern Europeans is that they are not as welcome as they once we're - they're not wanted.

Yes you are right they can still move freely at the moment - they just choose to move to other countries where they are valued!

Where do you think your strawberries come from in the winter Andy?

In Summer, right now, they come from my garden, supplemented by British ones from the greengrocers.

I don't buy the foreign ones in winter, because they taste inferior to British ones, and in particular my garden ones.

The point is that someone is picking the British ones, cheaply, because they are no more expensive than previous years, and there are plenty of them.

What happens in winter is irrelevant. They don't grow here in winter, so there is no requirement for any foreigners to come here and pick them.

Most cannot even speak English, and don't know what is being said about them, and as is they care. They are only interested in the wages that they are paid.

Many are simply staying at home, as Romania becomes more prosperous, as a result of all the money that the EU is pumping in there, that shortly, we won't have to pay for any longer, thank goodness.

Tbf the wholesale price of strawberries is the same as last year. It may be there’s a larger harvest this year so the amount being picked is the same. Not my field (lol)

you could actually blame the big supermarkets that ruin farmers not brexit , all supermarkets turn over billions a year , a farmer just makes a wage and a living.

its the supermarket that screw the price so low for what they will pay the farmer for his produce , they.ll give 10p for a pint of milk, and sell it for £1.10, same applies to strawberries beetroot onions etc etc etc , all fruit and veg.eggs etc

Farmers may start paying a decent wage and put there prices up and the supermarkets may have to cut there astronimacal profits a bit .

like any brexit issues , will start of with teething problems and bumpy rides but will all smooth itself out and lead to a better britain for all of us

Theres nothing we cant sought out .

farmers will be happy ...

poll tax caused riots , no one moans anymore

mobile phone calls and charges used to be high , no one moans anymore

internet connections the same

once things slowly get soughted and people get used to it ,life goes on .

Some farmers have been living charmed lives, getting subsidies from the EU, many for growing nothing.

This might get the fuckers off their arses, and we might see crops other than r@peseed growing in the fields pretty soon.

So no manufacturing, and now no agrifood either? Will it be more services then? So why are leaving one of the largest single markets for services and pinning our hopes on FTAs that don't include services? Seems like a shit idea to me!

Funny how the supermarkets, shops and markets are all full of English strawberries, all being sold as cheaply as ever.

How come there are not empty shelves or sky-high prices, if there is no one to do the picking, and thus a shortage.

Locally source is always better. Since it doesn't need to be transported. But I would buy white strawberries. Best ones I've ever tasted. Only grows in the mountains. Mmmm.

Poles are good hard workers,sadly Brits are lazy and greedy,the youth of this country must get of there bums,they will have to next year a great Brexit benefit.

It is because of lazy Brits the strawberries are going to waste in the fields and prices are going up.Very annoying as I love British strawberrys especially Scottish ones

Guys us eu folk will continue to come to your shores and steal your jobs and women, those already there are not going to leave because of brexit and return to their own country where wages are usually a quarter of what they earn in the UK not to mention having little or no social welfare or NHS and I can tell you that the paddys earning 300 pound a day as tradesmen in London ain't gonna return home to earn less than half that at home
