He will be here soon to quote a report by an albanian economics student that says a Boots in Leeds is expecting to sell an extra 2 or 3 toothbrushes a year post Brexit. And call anyone who doubts him a “remoaner”, say something meaningless about “project fear”. Then leave again.

Amazing isn't it?

The miracle of doing the impossible.

A free trade deal

No freedom of movement

No membership of the customs union

Where is this free trade deal?

I can't see one.

All I can see is some verbals from Donald Trump, that font of every truth, in the White House garden, saying the US and EU have agreed to work together to reduce trade barriers between the two blocs.

A suggestion the EU may lower tariffs on soya beans and LPG.

Nothing published. No agreements in writing.

It seems to have taken the heat out of his trade war with the EU. That's it.

Here is the official statement from the EU:

Joint U.S.-EU Statement following President Juncker's visit to the White House

Washington, 25 July 2018

"We met today in Washington, D.C. to launch a new phase in the relationship between the United States and the European Union – a phase of close friendship, of strong trade relations in which both of us will win, of working better together for global security and prosperity, and of fighting jointly against terrorism.

The United States and the European Union together count more than 830 million citizens and more than 50 percent of global GDP. If we team up, we can make our planet a better, more secure, and more prosperous place.

Already today, the United States and the European Union have a $1 trillion bilateral trade relationship – the largest economic relationship in the world. We want to further strengthen this trade relationship to the benefit of all American and European citizens.

This is why we agreed today, first of all, to work together toward zero tariffs, zero non-tariff barriers, and zero subsidies on non-auto industrial goods. We will also work to reduce barriers and increase trade in services, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, medical products, as well as soybeans.

This will open markets for farmers and workers, increase investment, and lead to greater prosperity in both the United States and the European Union. It will also make trade fairer and more reciprocal.

Secondly, we agreed today to strengthen our strategic cooperation with respect to energy. The European Union wants to import more liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States to diversify its energy supply.

Thirdly, we agreed today to launch a close dialogue on standards in order to ease trade, reduce bureaucratic obstacles, and slash costs.

Fourthly, we agreed today to join forces to protect American and European companies better from unfair global trade practices. We will therefore work closely together with like-minded partners to reform the WTO and to address unfair trading practices, including intellectual property theft, forced technology transfer, industrial subsidies, distortions created by state owned enterprises, and overcapacity.

We decided to set up immediately an Executive Working Group of our closest advisors to carry this joint agenda forward. In addition, it will identify short-term measures to facilitate commercial exchanges and assess existing tariff measures. While we are working on this, we will not go against the spirit of this agreement, unless either party terminates the negotiations.

We also want to resolve the steel and aluminum tariff issues and retaliatory tariffs."

Lol.

Maybe.

In about 7 years time

Perhaps.

Until Trump has a hissy fit, changes his mind next week and point blank denies he said any of it.

I mean, why would you set up a trade deal with with an entity you just a week or two earlier called a massive threat?

I suspect the significance of this lies in the fourth bullet point:

"Fourthly, we agreed today to join forces to protect American and European companies better from unfair global trade practices. We will therefore work closely together with like-minded partners to reform the WTO and to address unfair trading practices, including intellectual property theft, forced technology transfer, industrial subsidies, distortions created by state owned enterprises, and overcapacity."

China.

Taking the heat out his spat with the EU allows Trump to go after China, whom he accuses of raping the US economy.

Looks like the EU and US are going to confront China jointly.

Which will leave the UK in a particularly awkward position once we leave the EU.

Britain has had the begging bowl out to China for several years now and Chinese money is buying up large chunks of British infrastructure, such is our desperate need for foreign cash.

The new Hinkley Point power station will be one-third owned by the communist party of China for example. New power stations near London will be wholly-owned by China using Chinese technology (copied from the US).

The list is endless.

A concerted effort by the EU and US to thwart the Chinese will leave the UK isolated.

Its not a free trade deal on the mould of the EU, its a regular trade deal. Theres no removal of all tarrifs and barriers on services, theres no removal of all customs checks, tarrifs and barriers on goods. Its closer to the Canada deal than the EU.

I have allways said doing a deal can be simple, just use common sense and no political dogma.

Trump could sort Brexit in a few weeks but he is not British, but Alan Sugar could do it,he did say this after the vote.if brexit is to be done properly get business men to do it and the politions to shut up and just approve what we do.He is right of course.

many things can be done in a month but global trade deals, nope and brexit well double nope..

the only one flip flop trump has made a fool of is his foolish flip flopping self, remind us all again how his tariffs have affected the US farming industry..

oh yeah, he said he would win and is now spending billions in subsidies to prop up that particular industry..

he will flip flip on all the tough talking which is starting to affect potential republican voters just in time for the mid terms and he will claim a 'really, really big win'..

Awwww... bless you. You actually think Trump has done something. No, he has come out and announced something big to try and cover up the last big gaff he made. He's come out spouting nonsense about selling soy beans and LNG to the EU. The EU said it will buy LNG *in the future* once it has built the ports and infrastructure that doesn't yet exist. And the soy beans thing was to try and appease his soy bean farmers, that due to him waving his dick at the Chinese has resulted in 116 bankruptcy filings in the past quarter by farmers. There is already zero tariffs on EU importing soy beans from the US and we already import a load of them. But there is no way we would want even a tenth of the amount that China imported from them.

But hey... I'm sure we could have a word with Weatherspoons and get them to come up with a nice cocktail that uses soy beans and British sparking wine.

The point is that Trump has claimed that he has done a deal and has offered the EU, whom he was calling a foe the same "deal" that Leavers are counting on as a great prize. It's meaningless.

The EU does not buy soybeans or gas. Individual states and countries do. Our biggest soybean supplier was Brazil who is now exporting to China. We were always going to shift supplier under those circumstances.

There will be an independent arbitrating body for resolving disputes which is what the ECJ does. It will cost a lot of money and we will have to abide buy its rulings. The difference is the ECJ is transparent. We know it's cost and what the judgements are. Arbitration is not under most trade deals.

That would be a win then

Why isn't Trump an example of someone with good sense?

He slapped tariffs on the EU because the trade with the USA was unfair to the USA. He came to Europe and told everyone how much he hated the EU, and what happened?

D*unker went running to America to sort out a trade deal because Mrs Merkel told him to, because she knew how much the tariffs would hurt Germany.

He went and an agreement in principle has been reached.

Trump's plan worked. You're just too biased, and left-wing to see it.

Well, the EU has a 120 billion euro trade surplus with the USA at present, so they can afford to make some concessions.

They levy a 10% import duty on US made cars. The USA only levies 2.5% on all those imported German cars. You can see why Mrs Merkel panicked, and sent D*unker over to sort a deal out.

There is a 120 billion surplus in the EU's favour. You think Trump and US business think that's a good thing.

"

Let's just take cars then, what were EU tariffs at the start of the year, and what are they today, supposedly after this trade deal?

"I'm a bit concerned as to what concessions the EU may have made to get a deal.

What deal?

The trade deal that has been agreed to be negotiated to end the recently introduced tariffs on both sides.

No trade deal has been agreed to.

A trade deal has been agreed to be negotiated. That was the point of the joint announcement between Trump and D*unker this week.

No, it hasn't.

Trump said "I'm gonna whack a load of tariffs on a load of countries"

Businesses, economists and politicians around the US said "please don't do that, it's a terrible idea".

Trump said "I'm gonna do it anyway"

The EU said "if you put tariffs on us, we'll put tariffs on you. How about we just keep things as we are instead?"

Trump said "screw that, I'm putting tariffs up"

US business said "these tariffs are really fucking hurting us"

Trump then met with the EU and announced "I'm getting rid of the extra tariffs, I'm the greatest, I'm the most amazing negotiator ever, look how quickly I got rid of these tariffs"

And people like you have somehow come to believe that a trade deal has been done.

Who came running to the USA? D*unker. Did Trump do running to him? No!

There is a 120 billion surplus in the EU's favour. You think Trump and US business think that's a good thing.

Trump slapped on the tariffs to bring D*unker to heel and it worked, because Merkel told him to get to Pennsylvania Avenue to sort it out, because the EU slaps 10% on American cars, and America only slaps 2.5% on all those German cars, and you think she was going to allow that to happen?

You need to read some newspapers instead of just being blinkered and rabidly pro-EU. Maybe read some of the world's financial ones, and see what the world's economic analysts are saying.

I told you. And Trump would have matched the EU rate on imported German cars, but for D*unker not being sent over by Merkel. In the new trade agreement, the grossly unequal tariff in the EU's favour will disappear.

So you should be able to tell me the rates at the start of the year, and what they are now.

There is no deal agreed. Are you genuinely unable to get that? There is no negotiation starting.

Its a quote to save face and claim a "win".

The EU does not buy anything. Individual countries and companies do if they want to. The EU can raise any limits if there are any (which there are not on gas and soybeans).

Cars are not the biggest part of the US market. Pick-ups are. We do not tax pick-ups at 10% and they do not tax at that rate. US built cars are also completely inappropriate for European roads which is why they have always had European subsidiaries for this market so the tariff was of no interest. This is also what European car companies do with factories in the US.

Trump is wrong. He's a shouty putz.

Reading a newspaper is not research.

"Amazing isn't it?

The miracle of doing the impossible.

A free trade deal

No freedom of movement

No membership of the customs union

No membership fee

Something Barnier and Juncker insist is impossible.

Pretty sure the ECJ won't be having oversight over American law courts either. "

Exactly, Trump will do any deal that he believes is best for the US. That doesn’t mean he won’t deal with us directly, but we will have to be able to be able to do such a deal. Any weak deal with the EU will see us having to do all our business with the same restrictions we had before BREXIT.

Trump is waiting, and he will is ready to do business with a free and independent Great Britain,

There will be a dispute resolution process. It will be in secret. Of we introduce a law that costs US companies money we will pay them compensation, even on medical grounds. In secret. The ECJ does the same job in public.

Which option do you prefer?

Trump will do any deal where he is in a position of power and can name his terms.

That's why he's trying to divide Europe.

Do we want a trade deal with the USA more than with Mauritania? Will we offer the USA better terms?

If yes then why will we have a better bargaining position than the EU?
