Thirty years ago this week, NASA scientist James Hansen told the world. the age of climate change had arrived.

Now, despite every wind turbine and solar panel constructed and installed since 1988, global carbon dioxide emissions have risen 68 percent. At the time of Hansen’s speech, fossil fuels provided about 79 percent of the world’s energy needs.Todsy it's 81 percent.

On our current path, emissions will still be rising 30 years from now, and the world will have long ago left behind all reasonable chances of preventing irreversible tipping points .

Is there anyway to avoid this?

Are we all resigned to this reality now?

Our western way of life is unsustainable.

If everyone lived like us, we'd need the resources of five planets to sustain it.

Some of the most densely populated parts of the planet have decided they do want to live like us.

And consume like us.

India and China rapidly are consuming more and more.

As someone once said to me, there'll be a war when everyone in India wants a fridge.

Will a rise in sea level be nature's way of restoring some balance by reshaping how and where everyone lives?

Perhaps. But it'll be a very bumpy ride to get there.

I fly quite a bit due to my son and extended family living in another country and currently am reading Naomi Kleins' "This changes Everything" -yes I do find the irony of reading this in airports quite amusing -I do however wonder if anyone else has cottoned onto the irony.

Green energy is going to hit a tipping point that will make it far more economical than sticking with fossil fuels.

Once it hits that point things will start to improve and we have to hit that tipping point as soon as possible. That means intensifying our drive to solve this problem.

Some see the solution to the problem as a technological one others see it as a social economic one.

Are we hoping for a technological silver bullet because we won't need to change our ways and lifestyle .A technological sticking plaster for ignorance.

While I totally agree that we have a duty to protect our planet against man made climate change, I do sometimes wonder if mans' hubris is getting a little ahead of itself -yes we may destroy all humankind and most of the animals/ plants known to us, but I seriously doubt we will destroy the planet -after all the planet has outlived countless other apocalyptic events and will no doubt continue to do so. Maybe, just maybe the eveolution of the planet requires the production of vast amounts of plastic for a future purpose we cannot even concieve of -we could well be pawns in the great planetary evolutionary cycle -who knows...

Yep. Not one for us to worry about. Our more immediate future is Philip K Dick / Charlie Brooker / Richard Morgan type stuff, rather than Gene Roddenberry. He was unrealistically optimistic about human nature.

The problem with this life on other planets is a matter of concurrence -i.e. because of the vast distances involved, even if we did manage to find a communication signal from another galaxy,, the likelihood is that that signal is already billions of years old and that the originator is either dead or that their civilisation has long since evolved into something else entirely.

This may sound defeatist but I honestly don't think that you can get 7 billion people to start doing enough in order fo reduce, halt or reverse the damage we're doing to the planet and, consequently, ourselves. It becomes even harder, when you have people like Trump who thinks that his shit don't stink (literally). Therefore, I think nature will look after itself and get rid of the predator who's out to destroy her. Maybe a plague, maybe a virus, something that will attack and destroy all humankind only. After all, the rest of earth's inhabitants (whether animals, plants, etc) are not on a mission to destroy it, so why should they have to die with us? Sometimes you have to get rid of the nuisance and start afresh.

You only need to get a few hundred of the most powerful and wealthy on side.

The rest will follow.

I think hoping nature will purge the planet of the human infestation is unlikely.We are the masters of our ecosystems destiny.

For me it is a manifestation of a wider problem -i.e. the whole capitalism is great thing. That is to say that capitalism is always about demand and supply and ever increasing efficiency thanks to our all faithful trust in science to solve all our problems. However,t the premise behind that is that we somehow live on a planet of infinite resources. I think we are now seriously testing the limits of the capitalist world model especially as we are nearing the limits of the problems science can solve for us while simultaneously realizing that the price to pay for the consumerist "buy, buy, buy" culture that has emerged from capitalist thinking is that we have used up everything in the pantry for what exactly?
