Echoes of the holocaust from Italy

So it begins, Italy's new far-right government purges the country of people it considers undesirable.

A census of the Roma community, followed by deportation of non-Italian travellers whom it stigmatises as criminal.

The interior minister says "unfortunately" they cannot deport Italian-born Roma.

Huge row in Italy and real challenge to the concept of human rights that underpins any country's membership of the EU.

The European Convention on Human Rights, which predates the EU, was drawn up by the UK in the 1950s as a guarantee that no country ever again do what the fascists did to the Roma, the Jews and others in the 1930s and 1940s.

The persecution of the Roma in Nazi Germany in the mid 1930s was one of their first purges. Again, stigmatised as criminals of impure blood, the deportations soon followed racial stereotyping.

Italy now wants to go down the same road.

Will the rest of Europe stand idly by, as it did in the 1930s?

As usual, money will talk. I heard today that Merkel will probably give Italy (and possibly other countries which bear the brunt of immigration) more money in support to deal with them, as well as some other concessions, primarily to save her own skin but also to calm things down.

Long term, there will be a common policy agreed on how to deal with the large number of immigrants crossing into Europe and I really think it will come about soon. They have pushed that can as far down the road as they could. It won't go any further and I'm sure they realise it now.

Did the EU do anything in Spain while democracy was being crushed and peaceful voters went to the polls in Catalonia only to be beaten to a pulp by Spanish police? No the EU did nothing so why expect any action in Italy?

UK's Labour party seem to be the most likely instigators of a holocaust, bearing in mind their anti-Jewish proliferation. Will Herr Corbyn be employed as an adviser to the Italians?

That's funny, I haven't seen any Remainers tell Brexiters to leave, I have however seen Brexiters tell Remainers to leave. Although their comments did seem to aimed specifically at people with certain profile pictures.

The former director of the CIA says that the camps used to detain migrant children are reminiscent of Auschwitz. A Fox News host however has said that they are "essentially summer camps" for migrant children.

What a joke!

You accuse a man who has spent his adult life fighting racism and bigotry of being like Hitler while naming yourself after a racial slur issued by a man who is the stereotypical perfect tall blond Aryan male. I could carry on but there is no point.

You are clearly a disgraceful and hateful individual.

The holocaust did not begin with gas chambers.

Racial and ethnic cleansing occurred because of years of propoganda designed to dehumanise minorities, to erode empathy and enable ordinary people to shrug their shoulders in slient acquiesence.

A financial crash, years of austerity and the rise of demagogues, populists and extremists.

The characters are different, the locations and victims may be different. But the pattern is similar.

Not if you have studied the history of the Nazis and their treatment of the Roma from about 1935 onwards.

It seems to me that people like the OP pick and choose which human rights they want to be concerned about. Something must be done in Italy, but zero fucks given about the human rights of Spanish voters in Catalonia.

Costa Blanca Spain...

Firstly I think that Italy expelling all non Italian Roma and Trump's treatment of the children is completely over the top and I do not condone either.

However this is a problem of the liberal left's own making.

For years anyone who has tried to open a reasonable debate on immigration has been shouted down as a racist, bigot, nazi Etc. and the debate shut down before it even started.

The liberal left's position has always been a full open door policy and to hell with any other viewpoint.

Well now they reaping what they have sown.

Somewhere in the bowels of history on this forum, when someone was chucking the Nazi slur around, I warned that if you keep labelling everyone who is even slightly right of centre a Nazi then when the real ones turn up you will not notice until it is too late and been well and truly bitten on the arse.

Why do you think Italians voted for the League? or Americans voted for Trump? For a laugh, a bit of a giggle?

No they voted because they were sick and tired of the left using them as election fodder then completely ignoring them. People have had enough.

It is about time, nay well overdue, that a sensible debate is opened on immigration.

Shouting people down, labelling anyone who advocates control as a Nazi, and kicking it into the long grass only adds to frustration and feeds the REAL far right.

As I said earlier, you reap what you sow.

The scary bit for me was the fact that he expressed disappointment at not being able to kick out Italian born Roma people, which suggests there is more underlying going on...

It would be a bit like a UK government minister saying he was disappointed that he couldn’t remove British born black/ Asian people....

I am sure most would be horrified

I did notice that one of the usual suspects instead of condemning yet again went for the moral equivalence argument... which I am not surprised he did as he used the same argument for Charlottesville.... oops did I give away who it was
