....to bring it in line with some other countries, once they are elected.

Does the UK deserve it?

Many people I know have to work then anyway and not by choice.

I don’t see what difference it would make. Like you say most of us don’t get them.

I think it was in the last Labour manifesto.

A bank holiday to mark the patron saint days of England, Scotland, Wales and NI.

That said, the UK must be the only country in the world that does nothing to mark the anniversary of its own foundation - May 1, 1707.

I would like to see 11th November a bank holiday then maybe people would have an opportunity to reflect and remember the past.

I think most people who are employed would agree with it but not the self employed or employers

I lose money every bank holiday as I’m self employed so nobody is going to make up the money

"I would like to see 11th November a bank holiday then maybe people would have an opportunity to reflect and remember the past."

I think the opposite would happen. It would turn into a retail day, with people more obsessed with bank holiday bargains. The thought of someone giving the ultimate sacrifice will be passed over for a good deal on magnolia paint.

It would cheapen it and make it rather tacky, and I'm not talking about the tin of paint.

How does Labour intend to pay for it? Is this magic money tree economics from Labour again?

Why would Labour pay for it? It'd be the business owners who would pay.

It's strange cultural differences - here in France they have a bank holiday not only on the 11th November, but also 8th May. If you asked someone in the UK why the 8th May how many would know the end of WW2 in Europe? Whilst I agree some would enjoy the day shopping - but maybe close the shops? Here we tend to have closed shops and only restaurants open - some exceptions in the coastal resorts!

Compare that to veterans day in the US.

Your post reminds me of a book I'm reading.

The 100th anniversary this year of the greatest calamity to strike the human race in recorded history.

Untold suffering and massacre of people on every continent.

As much as 5 per cent of the world's population wiped out in the space of a few months.

But do we remember them?

Does anyone even know what i am talking about?

Yep.

80,000 books written about WW1

400 about the pandemic.

Killed more than both wars combined.

But no marching bands, jingoism or services to remember any of those who perished.

50-100 million people wiped out.

Ebola on speed.

You know, it's this level of political discourse that really concerns me. These catchy, meaningless phrases that belie a lack of nuance and comprehension as to how the system actually works.

Don't get me wrong - I'm no fan of Labour, but this whole "magic money tree" stuff is just drivel, especially coined by a party that does *exactly* that when they want to pay for their own pet projects
