Can you believe this crazy, ideologically driven, red terror, Bolshevik, Menshevik, Commie, lefties in government have just re-nationalised a railway! It's outrageous I say. Stealing private property out of the hands of the bourgeoisie for the benefit of the proletariat! There will be people on the streets with burning pitchforks I tells ya.

Virgin and Stagecoach run the West Coast franchise, and Stagecoach runs the East Midlands franchise.

Branson and the Souters haven't disappeared just yet!

Anyone remember which lines were being run at a surplus, not requiring subsidies and paying into the inland revenue in 2010 after their franchise operator drove them into the ground and then handed them back in 2008 (I think)? Can anyone remember the Tories justification in returning them to the private sector or how long it took for them to relapse into requiring subsidies? I can't for the life of me remember which franchise it was that ran up the east coast, or who took it over.

Don't let the facts get in the way of the nonsense that you have just posted.

East Coast - i.e. the Government when it was nationalised in late 2009, after National Express failed at it, and then ran it until February 2015 returned £1 billion to the Government. So £1 billion in nearly 5.5 years.

Virgin/Stagecoach will have run it for nearly 3.5 years when it is handed back, and have also paid £1 billion to the Government. So they have paid the same in a much shorter time frame and have re-engineered and re-furbished the trains, which East Coast did not do. They have also dealt with the costs of the procurement of the new Azuma trains, which East Coast did not do.

It has lost them £200 million doing this. Therefore had East Coast continued to operate the franchise, they would have returned less than £1 billion to the Government.

Was GNER, owned by SeaContainers from 1996 until 2007.

National Express East Coast from 2007 until 2009.

East Coast, run by dft as "operator of last resort" 2009 until 2015.

Stagecoach (90%)/Virgin (10%), operating as VTEC, 2015 until present.

Both National Express and VTEC massively overbid on their franchise bids.

Other way round! , taxpayers were bailing out a private company!

Profits were going into shareholders profits and abroad instead of improving the service
