The government is giving £50 million extra to grammar schools. Is this taking money away from other non selective schools ?

I understand it’s to create extra places at these schools.

The money would be better spent on special needs schools. How many places for that sort of many a few thousand. When disabled BC and special needs kids have very few options and are taxed and bused about to find a placement.

Money would be better spent on finding the best teachers and creating video courses that are free online so everyone has the same opportunity to learn.

Similar to The Great Courses or Khan academy but for younger children.

I'm currently rereading John taylor Gatto's book Weapons of mass instruction at the moment and I would recommend it to everyone who wants to understand the history of education.

Grammar schools do play a role in as much as they give bright kids from less well off families a chance to excel and hopefully compete with kids from the private sector. It's not perfect but it may mean future leaders of this country won't be all privileged kids like JRM's and the like.

I doubt very much that's the reason behind this. The Tories have no love for poor bright children. You see to pass the exam model class parents must spend a few grand a year on private tutors . Junior schools do not teach non verbal reasoning.Which makes up one third of the 11+.

Well that's the Tory logic, but we know it doesn't work. There are decades and decades of research that show that grammar schools help to maintain inequality and class division rather than help it.

Middle class kids get coached to pass exams, the tests are skewed that way too, and the few working class kids who do make it are treated as second class citizens there, as parents struggle to pay for transport to them, trips etc etc.

The best way to build social mobility, and the mass of research shows this, is a uniform system, well funded, with highly qualified and well paid and respected teachers. Finland does this... no selection, no streaming or setting, low class sizes etc etc and they get fantastic results.

The Tories always want a two tier system to protect the Middle classes. When they say they're bringing back Grammar schools, remember that also means they're bringing back Secondary Moderns too. You can't have one without the other.

I'd prefer the money went back towards supporting schemes like sure-start that this government cut, damaging prospects for thousands of poorer kids across the country. I think it would have a greater, more tangible benefit for country.

I am all in favour of academic selection and grammar schools provided selection is not used as a method to reduce spending on those who fail to make it to grammar school. The problem is a £50 million injection is nothing like enough to offer a grammar education to all with the academic ability. Therefore this will turn out to be just another tory ploy to shift education spending from the majority to a privileged few.
