"Today, in 1707, the sovereign parliaments of England and Scotland were abolished, and replaced by a new parliament and a nation state. Today is the birthday of the United Kingdom. Yet no-one seems to care. Is the UK the only nation state in the world that ignores the anniversary of its creation? Why do you think that is?" Because they don't want to give us another bank holiday?

The UK also includes Northern Ireland! The DUP would be horrified if they read this thread! And the Union with Northern Ireland, to create the UK happened on 1st January 1801. And the 1st January is already a Public Holiday.

" From the Act of Union, ratifying and approving the Treaty of Union of the two kingdoms of Scotland and England: "That the Two Kingdoms of Scotland and England shall upon the first day of May next ensuing the date hereof and forever after be United into One Kingdom by the Name of Great Britain And that the Ensigns Armorial of the said United Kingdom be such as Her Majesty shall appoint and the Crosses of St Andrew and St George be conjoined in such manner as Her Majesty shall think fit and used in all Flags Banners Standards and Ensigns both at Sea and Land" May 1 1707 is the birthday of the United Kingdom of Great Britain. Ireland came along a little later.

"1st May 1707 IS NOT THE BIRTHDAY OF THE UK. Stop posting nonsense. I have told you already that it is 1st January 1801. The UK IS NOT just England, Scotland and Wales. IT IS also Northern Ireland, and that treaty was 1st January 1801. Today IS NOT THE BIRTHDAY OF THE UK. " No no no no! In 1801 we were the united kingdom of great Britain and Ireland. In 1922 we became the United kingdom of great Britain and Northern Ireland. ![]()

"I recall Farage, on the morning of the Brexit result, declaring June 29 "independence day". Perhaps the reason we don't mark it is precisely that - the 1707 Act didn't symbolise any new-found independence or overthrow of a rotten regime. i read somewhere that the UK is pretty unique in that respect - the establishment has always evolved to survive and never been toppled. Unlike most of other powers, which have rewritten the rule-book at some point in their history. " Was June 24th. ![]() ![]()

" Actually The United Kingdon, as we know it now, is not a union of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland but, as it full name suggests (the United Kingdon of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) a union of the Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is it's self a United Kingdon made up of the Union of the kingdom of 'England and Wales' and the Kingdom of Scotland. It is correct to say that 1st May is the Birthday of the United Kingdon of Great Britain. It would also be correct to say that 1st Jan would be the birthday of the United Kingdon of Great Britain and Ireland. However, whilst the United Kingdon of Great Britain still exists the United Kingdon of Great Britain and Ireland no longer exists. Maybe someone can tell us the date of the creation of the United Kingdon of Great Britain and Northern Ireland but, what ever that date is, it wasn't the 1st Jan 1801.
