"There is a recent podcast from Kings College London's Department of War Studies called "Fake News - A Road Map" it's a very good listen. They also produced a 78 page book to go with it. It points out that fake news was originally outlawed by the government of Charles I! Their points about the difference between misinformation and disinformation were good to. " . Probably wanted all those conspiracy theorists about the gunpowder plot shutting up

"If it was made illegal to publish falsehoods, every newspaper would go under overnight as would most websites. Let's face it there are lots of people out there who will take a meme as solid evidence or a YouTube video as absolute proof. Maybe the problem is too big now? " So I am right, just there is no appetite amongst the world population for honest reporting of fact when it contradicts prejudice, opinion and feeling.

"Of course fake news can be controlled, just make the owners editors and journalists who publish fake news criminally responsible, make the penalties the same as drug dealing (including seizure of property) and the problem will disappear overnight. " Hmm so what do we do when Russia puts out fake news?Do we invade them and lock Putin up lol.Nothing you can do about it,the best way to control it is to sensor the internet, ban facebook twitter etc maybe

Just a thought... And as for Russian hackers and the internet, how about turning them (as in all Russian content) off in the same way as China turn off internet content they do not approve of.

"I think it's wise to source your news selectively and appropriately first and foremost. "

"Our British broadcast use fake news nearly all the time with no lack of evidence they caused a lot of problems and if exposed they cover it up. A lot of people don't ask questions and its normally to sides to a story and they just take their word for it. I never believe what the BBC shows they told so many lies in the past " I think lies is the wrong word, they may direct you in a certain way but they do basically tell the truth

I never believe what the BBC shows they told so many lies in the past " Every journalist and publication will make mistakes or have a bad actor at some stage. The BBC have a great reputation worldwide and they have a very public complaints process. This is the benefit of having a public broadcaster. Its also pretty ironic that you accuse the Bbc of publishing things with no evidence and then you post no evidence to back up your points. So: what makes you think the BBC has a higher rate of errors or lies than other national broadcasters? Also, I am the only one that finds it wierd that an alledgedly native Brit referred to the BBC as our British broadcasting in the first line? Apart from not having the full title in there I have literally never heard anyone in real life say or write the full name...

"Of what is real or not? Especially now with russia that is pumping out news as they say, should you draw a line under it and look at different sources to make up your own mind, what is your view? " I did see an ex royal navy admiral who was criticised by the news presenter on bbc news for not towing the government line that the latest alleged chemical attack wasn't a definite one. So, propaganda / fake news can cut both ways

The thread you are referring to isn't written in what I would describe as plain English so what can you expect?
