Women's clothing sizes

A political thread, with a small 'p'.

As a pretty stable UK 12-14 size, and because of time restraints not allowing proper shopping, I've taken to Internet shopping, and consistently find, whether UK based or overseas, I have to order Large or XL which is a bit off putting.

Friends with a young teenage girl recently commentated the school skirts and trousers were sold in shops with a ridiculously narrow waist - their child is tall and thin which makes it worse.

We can all, I hope, understand what this does to the psyche but do men find this and what why does this continue despite the known connection with female suicides and mental health problems? Is there a hidden problem in boys?

With trousers male sizes seem to be better thought out with 2 measurements (waist and inside leg) but shirts and tops seem very like female sizes and there is just one measurement, and the one size 'fits where it touches' rag trade ethos for non tailored clothing seems to be the way of things. There is of course a simple answer to the problem...

Get out the 'housewife' and make simple alterations.

Bristol East

I've heard the opposite of this.

Manufacturers under-sizing their stuff. Someone who is a size 12 buys a garment labelled size 10 (but it's actually a size 12) and keeps buying the brand because of the feel-good factor from thinking they are getting into a size 10.

That's fine if it's too big but some of the dresses I bought would need about an extra metre of fabric!

It's not as big a problem as mostly guys don't have hips and tits so waist and chest is easier to get fit properly . There will be some who suffer from anorexia or obesity though the number who suffer as the female's do i believe is less as it's not as prominent as the way women are portrayed as less than perfect in the media tv magazine's and social media too .

From my point of view online shopping is a nightmare i really have to try things on to see if they fit me .

My eldest son is 14, slim build but relatively tall for his age, I struggle buy him clothes, we usually buy from Gap but have to buy age 16 and that's hit and miss as the waist is too narrow.

The other problem is that boys clothes especially school wear is that the waists are too big to get the length right and whilst they have adjustable waists they end up looking like they've got a balloon arse as you pull them in so much to fit.

As for my daughter, as a broad shouldered 13 year old she is an absolute nightmare to get clothed, child sizes too small, adults too frumpy or too revealing.
