Papers found this morning in a drawer in the Scottish National Archive in Dunfermline have shocked Unionists.

Amongst some rare first editions of the Dandy & Beano is the original Scottish copy of the Treaty of Airdrie. The treaty, signed on 1st April 1818 by both England and Scotland, gives the right for Scotland to be an independent nation if the document could be delivered to the Chief of the Clans at Edinburgh Castle within 200 years.

The document was entrusted to Angus McHaggis, Laird of the Glen, and historically the envoy of the King of Scotland. He mounted his horse, Lightning, and set off for the Edinburgh.

However, the treaty was lost when it dropped from his sporran after Lightning stumbled on a molehill just outside Inglistone. It was never seen in public again.

Local folklore has it that the mole was wearing a waistcoat with the flag of St George on the front and a Hibs shirt on the back.

Nicola Sturgeon is due to make an announcement shortly. The Chief of the Clans and descendants of Angus McHaggis were unavailable for comment.
