A Scottish council is planning to provide school meals 365 days a year to children from low income families, each parent has to have an income of less than £25,000.

North Lanarkshire Council said its proposal would help tackle "holiday hunger".

The "Food 365" programme would cover the 175 days of the year when lunches are not served in school.

If approved, the council will run a pilot project in the spring break and could then extend the scheme over the summer holidays.

Frank McNally, convener of education, said: "These proposals to tackle weekend and holiday hunger are the most ambitious in the country

Many won't have the money to feed their children propperly, many will spend funds on booze and fags before feeding their children...

You say "each parent has to have an income of less than £25000". I assume to qualify?

Therefore the mother and father can each earn £24995 each, combined as £49990, and they would still qualify??

I had free school dinners, I came from a one parent family, my dad died when I was 9.

The omly income my mum had was her widow's pension, so free school meals helped a lot.

I believe that kids today if they need them should have free meals at school, and this scheme if it can be run properly would benefit a lot of family's.

Kids should not go hungry due to the failings of their parents, maybe parents can be means tested to be eligible.

To be honest there will be no easy way to implement this with out some people abusing it and others decrying it

If the evidence supports it, then it could be a good move. We have fractionated government in many ways in the UK, which can mean that people don't get the comprehensive services that are needed. Physical and mental health services or Health and social care services, as examples.

Sometimes it needs one service to provide services that maybe others could have done - it just needed one of them to do it.

Hunger, when without food, doesn't stop on a Friday night, when leaving school. The education system is affected by the nutritional standards that citizens being served by it and probably more importantly, whether these children even have any or sufficient food at all.

We do know that the poorest members of the UK society have been more greatly subject to so-called austerity measures, compared to those who are at the other end of the spectrum. Those seeking benefits have also faced major decreases in benefit levels and can also face sanctions, at the whim of benefit providers, for up to 3 years - even if they secure employment, during part of that 3 years. Should they become unemployed again, the family has no income: as a policy, that should never be accepted in any society that is humane and civilised. We officially leave children of such families to have no money for food or housing. It's abhorrent. Would any sane and decent person think it inappropriate to provide food to starving children? I would surely hope not.

Where do you all come up with this sort of thing? Half read and half remembered information mixes with prejudice.

Food is relatively cheap, rent is not.

I can see no reason not to feed children. Children are the responsability of not only their parents, but society as a whole, because they cannot fend for themselves.

Totally agree if Council can they should heart disease in Scotland is highest in UK. Seems to be about education which obviously is lacking. So not to burden NHS in later life feeding the children properly to give them the best start obviously has to be embraced. Parents need to look at themselves re: sorting out the heart disease title of highest in UK.

Yes it's about choice. Life evolves nothing is set in stone. Circumstances change.

Im sure the Lions share of parents have children with the intentionS to bring up best they can with resources available to them. Certain governments would squeeze n squeeze the poorer in communitys making it really difficult. Therfore others having to pick up the slack. It's called society not a dictatorship
