One consequence of this, is the official opposition party will be the far-right Alternative For Germany (AfD) party. As official opposition, this will allow them a certain amount of influence, through committee work etc.

Disturbing, or should Germany go back to the polls?

yes it is disturbing... but it means that 85% will be on one side can shut out the other 15

also.. it took them the best part of 5 months to get to this point.... and grand coalition means they have to keep policies centre-ish.....

It is healthy with a opposition and they should go back to the polls, cos many dont like her open border policy, hence why parties such as afd gains popularity.

the CDU may be centre-right, but there partners in coalition are the SPD, who are centre-left, and the SPD will be in charge of the finance, labour and foreign ministries as part of this deal.....

the CDU may be centre-right, but there partners in coalition are the SPD, who are centre-left, and the SPD will be in charge of the finance, labour and foreign ministries as part of this deal....."

... and so will be unable to influence domestic policy .... merkel has what she always wanted which is a free hand at forcing religious conservatism onto the population .... but having to sell her arse to the dangerous lunatic extremist fringe is a mistake

It's a stepping stone but to what uncertainty? It's a mixed country - my German friend and his Spanish wife were frequently denied accommodation and services in Germany, the deep seated feelings and divisions are pervasive and strong.

I think its democracy will need to struggle on some more, though at least their economy is stronger than the UK'S, which helps support morale there somewhat

I'm just wondering what concessions Martin Shultz has managed to squeeze out of Merkel for agreeing to the coalition? Martin Shultz is a former EU Commissioner and former President of the European Parliament, he is Europhile to the bone and recently said he wanted the EU to develop into a Federal United States of Europe. He may have Merkel over a barrel in forcing her to take Germany deeper into EU integration, which in turn will only fuel support for the opposition AFD.

I'd say it's because of a direct result of EU policies, like free movement of people and it's 'ever closer union' mantra bollocks. The EU is not listening and it's certainly not learning from its mistakes.

Post the brexit vote some on here were predicting far right government in France, Netherlands and Germany which has not hapoened..

People may want change but putting the fascists on power is rightly too much for the decent majorities in those countries..

Well I predict the AFD will be making more big gains in coming elections in Germany. It's transpired that one of the concessions Martin Shultz has got from Merkel is to let in a lot more migrants. There has already been a kick back against increased migration with the gains AFD made in the last election, increasing migration will only lead to a bigger kick back from the German population next time.

Only after they achieved their goal, which is to leave the EU, and we are now in the process of leaving the EU. Maybe in 5, 10 or 15 years time when the AFD win a referendum on German membership of the EU and the German people vote leave, then the AFD will start to decline.

Your memory is truly shocking. I actually tactically voted Conservative in the last general election last year and encouraged others to do so, the posts are all public on here for people to see. Ukip have also won 2 parliamentary seats in the past. Douglas Carswell won a parliamentary seat for ukip twice in Clacton, first in a by election when he defected from the tories and again for a 2nd time in the 2015 general election. Mark Reckless also won a parliamentary seat for ukip in a Rochester and Strood by election.

I predicted leave would win the EU referendum, I predicted Donald Trump would win the USA Presidential election and I predicted the tories would win the general election last year (they were the largest party), so clearly I've predicted more than one thing correctly.

Hot off the press (well the radio actually) here in Germany.

It seems like the wheels are coming off Martin Schultz's career.

He negotiated the grand coalition with Merkel and now he will take no part in it.

He had his heart set on being foreign minister but the largest branch of his own party have forced him to stand by the statement he made (that he would never ever work with Merkel) during the election campaign last year.

Now his enemies in his own party (and he has quite a few) have twisted the knife.

Couldn't happen to a nicer chap PMSL.
