US starts 'America First' tariffs

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

So what would you buy? Samsung, LG, or Whirlpool for your new washing machine?

.

The US has approved controversial tariffs on imported washing machines and solar panels.

The move is in line with President Trump's "America First" trade policy, which aims to protect local manufacturers from foreign competition

.

The first 1.2 million imported large residential washing machines in the first year will have a 20% tariff imposed on them, while there will be a 50% tariff on machines above that number.

By the third year, these will drop to 16% and 40% respectively.

Meanwhile, the tariff increase on imported solar cells and modules in the first year will be 30%, falling to 15% by the fourth year

.

Trump is doing as he said, putting America first.

Yesterday Trump placed a 30% tariff on solar panels imported from China. That is one of his first acts in his 2nd year of power, one of his first acts on gaining power was to remove all federal subsidies for renewable energy, in so doing costing some 10s of thousands of highly paid jobs and virtually destroying the US renewable energy manufacturing industry. Now he has in a second move effectively destroyed what was left of the industry and in the process guaranteed that some 200,000 jobs will be lost and that the USA will become even more reliant on fossil fuels.

It is not America first it is American billionaires first. But then Trump is quite open in his contempt for anyone who is not rich.

Basically if you are looking at a whirlpool washing machine you might want to buy one now before price goes up! Also the recommendation to exempt South Korean products was ignored, which means again he is only wanting to hear what he wants to hear

The solar panel tariffs is an interesting case as my even the us solar trade association wanted the tariffs.. that one will cost jobs as it will drive up the price of solar panels and will make alternative energy projects more expensive... which as a kick back helps his oil and coal benefactors

It's what happened in the 1930s after the financial crash - and is happening this decade after a financial crash, too. The rise of the demagogues, barriers going up between peoples, populism, trade wars.

Except the trade wars of the 1930s gave way to the real thing.

History isn't exactly repeating itself - the rise of the right was in many places a counter to the march of communism - but there are similarities.

When capitalism fails - as it did in the 1920s and again in 2008 - the elite wrap themselves in what little money is left and the masses are left to fight for the scraps. It breeds anger and resentment.

Trump tried to put massive tariffs on planes that were partially built in the UK. His tariffs got slapped down as illegal. Before you were supporting Trumps America First policies, the ones that put huge tariffs on these UK products. Please explain how America First is good for the UK? The only thing that seems to have been good are the courts slapping Trump down and putting him back in his box.

America First does not mean America alone. “When the United States grows so does the world"

Every Government should put there own country first

Why do you think the E.U. is putting the E.U. first in brexit, looking to punish UK

Didn't answer my question. I'll try again. You said "...President Trump's "America First" trade policy, which aims to protect local manufacturers from foreign competition" How is that good for the UK?
