"Yet experts in the field of civil engineering say it's entirely possible. But is it sensible? " Ah, that's the big question. Things have to be weighed up to what expectations would be 30-40 years time, and not at the present time.

"Should ideas for building a bridge to France wait for Brexit terms to be completed? Boris thinks a bridge is a great idea - he might have suggested Carillion to do it a few days ago " You should read the comments on the article on the Mail Online about this story. Hilarious. People demanding the tunnel is concerted over and ships stop sailing so they can close their eyes and imagine that Europe doesn't even exist.

"Yet experts in the field of civil engineering say it's entirely possible. But is it sensible? Or cost effective. " If it was reasonable, possible, cost effective and required, then why is the first time we hear about it on the day the French are in town? Where is the cross party support for a project that would likely take more than a decade? Who's paying for it? The Brits or the French? Or perhaps the Mexicans! What does the head of the infrastructure commission (or whatever it's called) say about it? Oh, we don't have one, he resigned because the government's crap.

"Big idea, no detail, something he can slap his name on and maybe distract from anything else that might be going on, designed mostly to raise his own profile, old buddies at the Telegraph sticking it on their front page. Yep, this is a patented "Boris Idea"." like the airport in the Thames estuary and the garden bridge.. sort of thinking outside of his empty box..

Actually engineering wise the supporting towers could actually house people, bit sci fi but I can see it in years to come, accommodation in all sorts of weird and wonderful places.

So yes, they may just have gone with the more expensive option that gave the requirements they needed " Build a bridge over one of the most busiest shipping routes, yep great idea Fully loaded oil tanker loses engine power and thrusters, drifting straight towards bridge. Environment issues, high winds how many leg supports would this bridge need and what depth, how deep it aint going to happen. another tunnel will be built if required but a bridge will not happen.

"lol, the "in thing" is to hate Trump so many follow like sheep thinking they are cool kind of sad really" i don't hate him, i have no place in my life for hate.. what i don't like is his attitude to women, other people who just happen to be a different colour, disabled people, how he has treated decent hard working people and small businesses in his own business life thus far.. any man who can say to another man that his teenage daughter 'is a great piece of ass' for me is beyond the pale.. i don't see you as the type of person for whom some of the above are acceptable, maybe its fun for you to bait people without actually looking in depth at what this man has done..? this is not a 'left or right' issue, nor is it about what was essentially a choice for the American people between 2 bad people and he is to be excused because of whatever about Hilary.. it's about common decency and not a set of 400 or 600 thread count sheets in a room..

"Actually what BoJo said was another fixed link, not another tunnel. If a fixed link for cars wad to be built then neither a bridge nor a tunnel would be best. From the feasibility studies done at the time of the last fixed link, for cars and trucks, the best solution is Bridge, Tunnel, Bridge." Isn’t one tunnel across bad enough...?

"I don’t agree with much that Boris Johnson does or says these days - but I do admire his ability to project big ideas. The U.K. should be at the forefront of big ideas - more so, post Brexit. Why shouldn’t the U.K. think big and plan big? Our history is full of engineering marvels but in recent years we don’t appear to be able to even add runways to airports and building new rail track is vehemently opposed." Exactly that. Any link would be a bridge, then a tunnel and then a bridge. This is the model being used around the world now. It allows for the shipping lanes, albeit narrower, to be kept open. We now need to think about the impact of AI and technology a decade in advance. Ships will be controlled remotely by computer and satellite, allowing for them to pass through shipping lanes closer together. Trucks will be the same. Driverless "roadtrains" will be able to cross faster, more cheaply and more efficiently. The only downside is that hazardous product still wouldn't be able to use a tunnel. We are on the cusp of the next technological revolution. Is now the time to start thinking of the infrastructure that we will need?

The busiest shipping lane in the world and your going to make it narrower? Accident waiting to happen! Technology can fail so just imagine the chaos when a ship hits one of the supports. If anyone has ever traversed the pont normandy they know how scary that can be - imagine on a windy day!

"I suppose that it will be another private financed funded project then Anyways it would never work because the french side would keep going on strike holding everyone up for ransom " Its only a talking point. There are no plans to make it happen, either now or in the future. It does allow thoughts of what infrastructure we may need in the next 50 years though, given the massive technological changes we are going to see soon.
