Depends on where it gets repatriated to.

Back to the country then fine. However more likely is from one "El Presidente" to another and the Chinese will carry on hoovering up the diamonds.

So...the president is under house arrest, the national tv station has been taken over and members of the government are being arrested?

Still not a coup tho. Sounds like Comical Ali has come out of retirement.

Mugabe and ZANU were given one of the best economies in southern Africa in 1980, but sadly it has been on a fast decline since then. Some of his policies did work, such as the education system, but even that's bu**ered now.

The writing was on the wall almost immediately he came to power, Tongogara killed and then the Fifth Brigade in Matebele land.

The opportunity to build an example of a modern, prosperous, fair society was squandered.

I'm not saying that it was. Is it any better now ? Or perhaps its worse ?

Mugabe had the opportunity to build upon what was given to him. He didnt.

Rhodesian society wasnt equal to all, but it wasnt Apartheid.

He wrecked a country which was one of the richer African nations and as usual power creates corruption. A leader can't be the best leader of a country for 40 years - and the thought that his wife was going to take over was just too much. I hope the country makes good use of this opportunity.

In a documentary about Zimbabwe, Ian Smith was interviewed about 15 years ago at his home and I noticed just how ordinary it was compared to the palaces of Mugabe.

Rhodesia may have been morally corrupt, but it was never financially corrupt. Ian Smith should have embraced moderate black allies and enabled a transition rather than what actually happened. Mugabe has been a disaster for Zimbabwe and its people. There is not a single element of society that has improved in the Mugabe era and the country has gone from being an exporter of staple food to a country that cannot feed itself.

Rhodesia was not “bad” for black people - unless they were fighting the Smith regime. It was fundamentally unfair and morally wrong - no question about that.

Really?

Do you seriously believe that having millions starving over 3 to 4 decades because Mugabe decided to take the most productive land in Africa from the men who knew how to farm it because they were white and give it to black men who knew nothing about farming, was and is better for the people of Zimbabwe?

Exactly. When nelson Mandela took office in south Africa he didn't force out the white population.

He declared all south africans equal And to work together regardledd of race.

Mugabe let bias influence his decidion at the expence of blsck and white Zimbabwean's welfare

Judt to add, the white population of south Africa wete expecting a form of revenge when mandela took office.

But he didn't. He put the past nehind him and thats the mark of a great leader.

That's where mugabe faltered.

It is still going to be Zanu PF in charge at the end of it, just a different faction than was in the ascendancy a few days ago.

I don’t think much will change for the average citizen. In another 20 years the fired minister the military is backing will be 95 and still clinging on to power much like Mugabe was.

There was social injustice in S Africa in the apartheid era but I can tell you from personal experience that ALL S Africans have never had it as good as they did in the 1980's and 1990's

I happened to be working at the time in the most heavily smuggled route of people in the world between Mozambique and S Africa. The world would never believe the exodus of native Africans into South Africa in the late 1970's and into the 80's. The money and the lifestyle for ALL Africans was in S Africa.

The problem is you get rid of one tyrant, give him a salary for life, a $10m bonus and impunity! Just to top it all get an old guard to take over who wasn't quite as bad as the last one. Well that's progress - and it just proves " there is always someone who is in a worse situation than you"!
