The Brexit vote was a protest vote and the people who felt most energised were those who have historically felt ignored my conventional politics. They voted for change.

It is unfortunate that the thing that they voted to change will not actually change the reason that they felt so ignored and so disenfranchised. It is sad that the political classes were not as energised and motivated during the AV referendum as they were during the Brexit referendum.

All electoral systems have pros and cons. Proportional Representation isn't an electoral system, its a type or group of systems.

The UK has various levels of government and lots of different electoral systems.

PR would need to be coupled with a move away from FPtP

I'm partial to PR-STV, but a party list system has merits.

Pr-stv works very well and on the one hand Im surprised more countries havent introduced it but on the other its easier to keep politicians accountable so obviously they dont want it.

But then you lose the advantages with local representation. Part of the problem in the US is that 2/3 of the elected government (president and senate) can basically ignore huge parts of the populations theyre supposed to serve.

PR in the UK would also require more MPs as every constituency would have to have about 4/5 MPs in order to represent as much of the constituency as possible.

Which would probably have to be offset by collapsing existing constituencies into larger ones, so there's not a few thousand MPs.

And that in and of itself would ruffle a few feathers.

The system needs to be more proportional. Not specificly totally proportional. Just enough so a party like ukip are not insulted by 1 seat out of 650.

What should we replace it with? How would we decide...? Would we have to vote on it? Oh wait! That would never do..,too democratic!

As for PR.,. It was massively debated and voted on...and rejected.

But a more recent look at things. The 2015 election, if done under PR, would have returned a Tory/UKIP coalition as they had 53% of the vote between them. Still keen OP?

because the two parties that would be most effected by any change would be the conservatives and labour... so its not in their interest to engage people!!!

I am not a fan of pure PR, because you end with shake coalitions like italy.... it doesn't lend to steady government!

but i am a fan of PR-STV.... that way you kinda get a better mix of everything...

We have councillors for that !

And thier is nothing to stop the party's nominating someone for every area !

You can't talk to councillors about national issues, such a DWP, Immigration, HMRC, bills in parliament, electoral reform etc.

You couldn't just contact whoever you wanted either, as they wouldn't travel all over the country to hold surgeries, it wouldn't be feasible for say the Green party MP/s to visit Cambridge and Cornwall and Cardiff and Colchester and Cumbria and do their parliamentary work.

they could appoint representatives and councillors can contact the relevant people !

I'd rather have democracy !
