subsidizing millennials rail fares

New discounts to millennials up to 31 birthday, are to be offered via a new railcard, that taxpayers will subsidise. As the for profit train companies will lose money, the UK taxpayers will foot the bill. A new conservative policy to help people struggling from the high fares of expensive privatized train system that the same party introduced. Should that party pay for it, or us taxpayers etc? Have the conservatives found the magic money tree they talked about at the election?

It used to be "get on your bike and look for work" now these lazy millennials want bloody trains! Bloody lazy bastards, choosing to be born in the 1980s and 1990s. If they were decent people then they would have chosen to have been in the 1940s. I shake my fist at them!

a couple of things....

1) where most money policies have been based at older people (i.e above inflation state pension increases) i don't mine a giveaway at the other end for once...

2) like most railcards they will have limits on when the can be used anyway (cant use a railcard anyway at the moment in peak times)

3) projected cost for this scheme.... 20 million pounds.... in the grand scheme of things, not really that much!!!

Its the Rail Delivery Group that oversees fares and railcards etc, on behalf of all the franchises that offer passenger services. It is independent of Goverment.

Most railcards cost about £30 (usually £27 with an online discount) and have been shown to stimulate rail travel. The proposed introduction of this one will add to the many that are available, appealing to a chosen market but anyone can buy a railcard in this country.

Please could you tell me which railcard I would be eligible for? I can't find one that I could use.

I'm over 25, under 60, live in the Midlands, travel once or twice a month on trains, on my own.

I maybe should have qualified my statement with "meet the criteria", and unfortunately, for you, you don't.

There are many railcards available; how many knew of the Esk Valley railcard, the Pembrokesire railcard, the Job Seekers entitlement card?.

Most are done on age or locality. I'm 54 and have 3 Two Together railcards, with various people. Unfortunately, the one group that really misses out are the single travellers outside of the student/OAP brackets.

Perhaps railcards should be available for everyone, maybe even free, to get a third off all rail fares? Or just have lower priced fares, if they stimulate travel. Anything that takes motor vehicles off the road is a good thing.

As someone pointed out, it's single travellers who aren't students or retired - adults not falling into regional railcard scope - who will resort to being single passengers, though instead in cars.

I remember many years ago, when holders of a season ticket could get a railcard. It was quickly identified that there were several short hop stations, mainly subsidised by Passenger Travel Executives, where the season ticket was that cheap, it was cost effective to buy one so that the holder could get a railcard.

I got a Attercliffe Road to Sheffield season ticket for £36, as did many hundreds of other people.

I don't understand a system that determines reduced rates on age. Such rates should be determined by need. Also, if the need is there, then it shouldn't matter if the people are traveling during peak times. If you have a low(ish) paying job, and you need to travel for work, then there should be incentive for you to continue working and to take a train to work.

When I was in high school the city I lived it offered free metro cards to students, but they had to meet two criteria: their parents had to make under a certain amount per year, and they had to live a certain distance from their school. I think that system made a lot of sense and the theory behind it can be extended beyond school children (not free travel, obviously, but reduced).

We may be, if we have to increase public subsidies to the private businesses running the rail franchises.

On a more serious note, we have to use more carrots to get drivers out of cars, pollution levels down etc.

Yes, brings to mind that Southern rail are subsidised generously by the tories despite scoffing labour's nationalisation plan. I agree

Better public transport is needed to get people out of cars. However, the bus service where i live is frankly crap.

subsidizing millennials rail fares ... surely it's more of a concern that the profit from high cost of our rail travel is being used to subsidise the cost of travel in germany, france etc.?
