A British couple who made fraudulent claim against a holiday company have been given prison sentences. Is this a bit too harsh - after all big companies and insurance companies can afford to pay compensation - they make millions?

The conspiring and intent took time, and it's a type of crime that snowballs with other copycats. The resultant costs are passed on to other consumers.

I understand your point about large companies, but if someone stole a small item if jewellery from your house and said, don't worry you have plenty more, how would you feel.

No one made them commit the crime.

For the record I don't condone it, I merely wanted opinions. In my book theft is theft no matter how small.

Too often people get off with a slap on the wrist for this kind of thing. Hopefully this will send a message as ultimately it's us, as consumers, who pay for it.

I think it was well played by the holiday company. Not like the British don’t have a great reputation abroad as it is. And not to mention the costs being passed onto to the consumer if these spurious claims keep happening.

Yes the insurance companies can afford it by passing the costs into others premiums.

Glad they got sent to prison.

I wasn't suggesting you were condoning my friend.

Sadly the perception that victimless crime is acceptable affects us all (victimless being companies etc).

Though to balance the argument I do believe that sentences/rehabilitation of many offences has forgotten about the impact on victims.

Regardless of unfortunate events that lead a person to crime (poverty, upbringing etc) there is still a victim and they should be the priority.

Its sadly true that corporations today have the same rights as people. Maybe they should start acting like people.

I think it's fucking marvelous.

Unless you back up the values of being "honest" and doing the right thing by punishing those that don't for personal gain then we might as well wrap it all up.

I'd particularly like to see it extended to business and business leaders, CEOs, high up politicians, think tanks etc etc.

I think we'd be jolly surprised how quickly there behaviour would change with a few years in the nick

Strange how when it was many of the MP caught fiddling expenses it was alright for them to just pay it back. (Although it did thankfully lead to my MP being replaced by another candidate at the next election over his the duck house claims)

It depends if you believe prison is there as a punishment, deterrent, to protect the public,or to rehabilitate .

Locking someone up for Freud normally does not make sense unless they are locked up and working in prison to pay back what they stole.

Good point! Therefore should a person serve their whole sentence and not be released early? Or if they are not model prisoners then they serve longer?
